Oh OK, thanks for the info! I thought in certain models the tubes needed to be washed regularly for some reason.

  • @hatrats Not that I know of, at least. My Medela was an open system and the manual specifically said to not wash the tubes or put water in them. It also gave directions as to what to do if moisture did get in the tubes.

  •  If you have a preemie or an immune compromised baby,  there are steam cleaning bags for the tubing.  Otherwise you don't have to worry about them.
  • @JNR6510 Excellent choice ;)

I just got my S1 today! I'm still trying to figure out how flanges work and fit.....

  • @Sugargirl1019 it will all make sense when your breasts are full of milk and your nipples will most likely be larger then. Have you looked on youtube about the spectra? I know medela has a flange sizing guide. I needed a small for one breast and a medium for the other, but I wouldn't have been able to tell that until my milk came in.
  • I ordered my insurance provided breast pump on Monday and it arrived today. So excited!  I got the Medela PISA.

  • @cmar1006 did they require a prescription?? My insurance does... I was terrified to breast feed my DD because I was so overwhelmed with people pressuring me... but this time I'm thinking I'm gonna give it a go to save some money so I get a longer leave. I was hoping insurance would cover the new Medela.

I used the Medela pump in style last baby and it did well for me after I went back to work at 2 months. I was nursing him when we were together during the day/weekends and on lunch break. We nursed until last month (21 months). I ordered the Spectra S2 this time because I heard great things about it. I figure if I don't like the Spectra I'll use my Medela from last time but wanted to give it a try.
  • I'm ordering a Medela, but I have to go through a specific supply company because the others I tried here in Dallas code the Medela as "upgraded" and insurance won't cover it.
  • Reviving an old thread because I had another question... My insurance sent me a list of about a dozen companies they go through to provide the breast pumps that are covered on my plan. Of those, four carry the Spectra S1 I want. Is there usually any reason to pick one company to order from over another?

  • @missyrosek  I noticed that a few of the different sites of different prices. I went with the one that offered the S1 for the cheapest.

  • My sister gave me the Medela PISA she got from insurance. She ended up switching to formula when my nephew was 6 weeks old, so it was hardly used and is practically brand new. I'll still get one through my insurance so I can keep one at work and one at home. I just called my insurance and they offer Medela PISA, Ameda Purely Yours, Spectra S2+, and Hygeia Enjoye. Not sure which one I'll go with yet.
  • @missyrosek I think the company I went through was aeroflow..they won't ship until a week before your due date but it was super easy and didn't require a prescription or anything you just put in your insurance info and then pick from the options you qualify for

Aeroflow sent me mine weeks ago. It has to do with your insurance.

No prob! They actually do require a prescription, but you give them your doctor's fax number and they do all the contacting!

But yes SO easy!! Loved them.

  • Aeroflow was amazing for sending me my pump last time. I had a Medela PISA, and it was more like "PITA" haha. I got a Spectra 2s with insurance through aeroflow.... oh my gosh. Night and day difference. It was so quiet and gentler on the nips, but still efficient. I exclusively pumped for 6 months and used the Spectra for about 3.5-4 of those. The Medela is more portable as it comes in a backpack, but the Spectra is easy to carry too.
  • Just found out this past week that the only kind of pump my insurance covers is the manual...so I am going to take a gifted electric mendela from one of my best friends. she has extra new attachments  and tubes etcs. She also thankfully has a larger chest so already has the larger cones to attach to the pump.

  • Going with the Spectra S1; have had so many recommendations from moms I trust who use the S1 or S2.  I'll probably end up using the Medela Symphony as well because they have those in the lactation room at work; lots of colleagues like that as well.

Yay, I'm 28 weeks now, so I was able to finally order mine through my insurance on the Medela site. They make you wait till you're 28 weeks. I got the same one I got last time, the Medela Pump in Style Advanced.
  • Yay! My pump came today! Considering last time with my old insurance I had to wait till after the baby was born, this is really exciting to have it in advance.
  • I just called my insurance and found out since I have met my out of pocket deductable it is paid for in full! I'll just get mine at the hospital like I did last time.
  • Got my pump yesterday!  Spectra S1.  Now I just need to figure out how the darned thing works!
