When will you tell your employer?

With my first pregnancy I didn't tell them until 4-5 months, just didn't really feel a need to. This time I don't think I'll be able to hide it that long. I'm curious when everyone is planning to tell.

funny story with my first: for some reason I was so nervous to tell my boss but when I did she said "me too!" She asked when I was due (May 10) and she said she was due the next day. What a coincidence ☺️

Re: When will you tell your employer?

  • My employer has known since week 8 due yo scheduling issues and an office move.

  • This actually happened to me last week..told my co workers (there's only 4 of us in my office) and one girl announced she's due 6 days after me.  I wouldn't say my boss took it very well though haha.  She's freaking out
  • I told my direct boss at 9 weeks due to the many doctor appointments I'll be having for hypertension. Knowing I needed the time off, I decided to spill the beans and protect myself. My job is extremely family friendly so the news was well received.

I told my supervisor at 9 weeks because I had been so incredibly sick and also wanted to protect my job, although I'm still scared they'll fire me. A few colleagues know, and if all goes well at u/s tomorrow at 13+1, I'll tell the whole office next week.

BF's office knows. His boss took the department out for lunch to celebrate, and gave us a beautiful baby book. My boss hasn't even asked how we're doing once since I told her. My old boss would have been so excited and happy for me  :(
  • I was going to this week but my boss is out so will have to be next week....and then I have 3 other bosses.... sort of, so I'll tell each of them one after the other...over the course of May I suppose.
  • I'm moving this summer and hoping to switch roles inside my company, so I won't tell until after that gets settled - maybe August? I work remotely mostly, so no one will notice or anything.

  • I told my boss at 10 weeks because it was spring season and about to get really busy in the agriculture world.  He told me his daughter in law was due 5 days after me
  • I told them at 11 weeks. I can't be around certain patients so they had to know... I had been just being sneaky before  :p

  • I'm trying to wait until my 90 days are up which should be like a week or two but I have to talk to my doctor about lifting tomorrow so hopefully she won't make me tell them now. I did tell 2 of my male co workers so they could at least help me get the heavy packages in my truck.
  • I told my bosses at 11 weeks and they were both amazing. I'm telling my student advisees today, since most of them will be seniors next year and I don't want them to freak out (I'll be out when they were doing college applications). I figure about an hour after I tell them the rest of the school should know.

  • @kissthesky32 I was in a similar position last time around. I knew I was switching to a new role but wasn't sure when. It worked out perfectly that I phased out of my old position before I left and started fresh when I returned from maternity leave
  • With my first I told my bosses at 13 weeks, just after we told family and just before we told the world. They were ok with it. One was very happy for me and super supportive and really a good boss. The other was happy for me at the time, but he was a dick and made the work place a hostile environment. I was leaving that job to become a SAHM so I had to give them time to find a replacement and hiring is so slow.

With the second we didn't tell my new boss (DS 1) until we told everyone else because he's a little blabber mouth. He's even more of blabber mouth now at 4 yrs old, so he won't find out about his new sister until the rest of the family does on Mother's Day. We've already told the 1 yr old.

  • I told my boss last week. We are down to two people in my dept so she needed to know so she could plan accordingly.

  • I told my boss at about 7 weeks when I realized the morning sickness was here to stay for a bit. I work part time and mostly evenings but she was starting the schedule for the next month and I for sure needed to stay afternoons since that is better for me. I found out I was pregnant a whole week after I started and it's pretty physically demanding so I needed to be open about it. My boss was super great about it though and gave me a hug and is just excited for me :) she actually knew before most of our family, we had only told parents at that point.

I told work last week (just my boss).  I had a work evaluation and you usually discuss plans and goals for the upcoming year so it was a good time for me to say I won't be around.  I've been thinking of taking extended time off if DH and I can swing it - I think with 3 little ones it would make things a lot easier for awhile.  Also I really don't like my boss and didn't want to tell him but it will be fun to see him scramble because he freaks out when I take a day off.

I told my boss very quickly *TW* because I had a loss in January that started at work and I am a teacher, so I need coverage in an emergency. */TW* I also have double the appointments since I'm seeing a high risk OB. I talked to the union about putting in for maternity leave and the rep helped me figure out what days will be paid (only 23 even though I have 45 sick days) and how long I can stay out. I will send my official letter to the district after I get my doctor's note on May 18. My coworkers found out last week. I'm hoping my students stay oblivious (although a few may suspect) and that their parents don't notice for a few more weeks.
It's funny how it's the little things in life that mean the most...not where you live, or what you drive, or the price tag on your clothes... There's no dollar sign on a piece of mind, this I've come to know! *ZBB*

My husband and I work for the same small company (about 75 employees total).  I think everybody knew by the time we were 6 weeks.  We didn't really try to hide it from anyone and they are very family/nursing friendly.  I knew we would want the support if something happened.

I told my boss at 5 weeks. There are a lot of changes happening in the business and I thought it was only fair she know because she might need extra support (since I am so nauseous & useless right now). She is also my mentor and good friend and she was so happy for us. TW* been through previous losses and had fertility issues, so she is so excited this happened for us TW*.

With my first, I only took 8 weeks and that was tough- hoping to take the full 12 weeks mat leave this time so she needs to know and plan accordingly.

  • I told my direct supervisor about a month ago because we are friends but I told my "big boss" last week. You can very clearly tell I'm pregnant so she wasn't surprised at all. Lol. She is very supportive and found someone right away for me to start training. I have a lot of responsibilities and most of them have never been taught to someone else so I feel really good that they are taking it seriously and I won't have to worry about coming back to a disaster after leave.
  • Im a SAHM but my husband told his boss at 12 weeks.

I told my boss (our executive director) yesterday and my coworkers today at 10w6d. I've worked here for almost 10 years and knew my boss would be thrilled...and with a very small staff (11 people) it's important to get thinking about coverage during leave sooner rather than later. Doesn't hurt that we are an all female staff, most of whom have children already!

  • I work for a small company and we always tell pretty early. I told my boss and the owner at about 6 weeks. I  needed to make some insurance adjustments so that was the main reason. I spilled the beans to my co-workers about 8-9 weeks.

  • My direct coworker knew as soon as I said 'I have some news for you' this was at 4 weeks (thought it was 5) I let my boss know at 8 weeks. We work remote about 10 of us so I will let corporate/HR know later on as my positive requires a backup. I'm thinking 6mo I.

  • I'm planning on telling my boss next week - I'll be 13 weeks. I think that she'll be supportive but I'm still really nervous about it. While I enjoy my job, my coworkers can be really prying and invasive about everything, so aside from 1 or 2 friends here, I'm not sure when I'll tell the whole office.
  • I am hoping to hold off until 16 or 17 weeks. I started this job in Apr after being laid off.  I would like 2 months of solid work under my belt before I tell them I am going to be off for a couple of months and not eligible for FMLA.  I really need a job to return to after Maternity Leave as I am the breadwinner for our family.  With all that said, my husband came home last night and said, "Wow you look pregnant!"  So time will only tell if I can hold out that long.

  • Well, I am technically the boss....so I don't really have to notify my "employer" other than our HR Director (who reports to me for FMLA at some point). However, I do have a "Board of Directors" that I report to every other month. I actually won't see them again until June 9. At that point, I will be about 16 weeks along.

I haven't decided if I will tell them at that time. I am going through contract negotiations and while I don't think it would influence things, I don't want it to even be a possibility. The tricky thing is, they won't physically see me again until August. So, I may have to notify them via email...or they can see me at 25 weeks and I could tell them then. I would feel a little bad telling them at 6 months along, but then again....I will tell my staff/employees before then and have a maternity plan in place. So we will see.

I'd like to wait as late as possible. I'm up for a promotion soon, and I'd like to hear back on that before I tell. In an ideal world, I'd like to wait until after the anatomy scan. We'll see though - I'll definitely tell my boss before my belly announces it for me. Based on my current Bump, I still have a while before I'll really be showing. I'm guessing I'll tell her and my project teams around 16-18 weeks. I think I'll let my Bump announce to the rest of the office...

My work knew basically as soon as I peed on a stick lol. With the military, they automatically put on work restrictions and send the paperwork straight to the commander and my supervisor. No hiding it here.

I told my boss at 8 and a half weeks. We live in a small community and we wanted to tell family so I was worried she might find out. I was a little nervous to tell her as I had only been in my job for 10 months and felt like I was telling her I am leaving for a year (I live in canada we get a year maternity leave) but she already had a feeling I was pregnant so it went really well. I will most likely tell my coworkers around 12 or 13 weeks.
  • I'm planning on telling my boss aka principal tomorow after school. I have to schedule time off for all of my appointments since work is such a far commute from my hometown. Her daughter is also pregnant *TW and her daughter and I both had miscarriages our first pregnancies. I think she will be thrilled for me.
  • I did NOT tell my employer, because someone else told them first lmao. I told my supervisor and the girls I worked with in my department, and the woman who trained me and then left for another job (she had come in for a visit). While she was there, she not only touched my belly, she also told EVERYONE that I was pregnant, apparently, and I had no idea for like 2 weeks that everybody knew until my boss called me in to discuss moving me into a higher-paying position in a different department (for unrelated reasons). He said something like, "This isn't why I called you in here, but I understand you're pregnant and I want to offer my congratulations.":  OMG SO AWKWARD.

  • I haven't decided for sure when I'll be telling my boss, because I've been in this job for less than 2 months (got my BFP 1 day after accepting the job offer, because the universe is funny like that). Ideally, I'd love to wait until I reach my 90-day mark, but that is June 12 and I will be 19 weeks at that point. I'm on the curvier side already, so I'm not showing at all yet, but 19 weeks still seems like pushing it.

It's a very small company (<20 people), so I'm nervous about how they will handle maternity leave (since FMLA won't apply). Fingers crossed that they are willing to work with me on leave, rather than showing me the door.

  • I just told mine today. I'm 11 weeks. I need to tell my team. I'll do that this week.
  • I told my boss at 9 weeks and am so glad I did. She has been so great and really accommodating!
  • I told my HR Department right after my appointment with MFM because it changed my ability to do certain aspects of my job. Then I told my boss the next week. I have had great responses from my company. I'm very pleased with how they've handled this pregnancy as well as my others.
  • I only told my supervisor. I don't know why I am super nervous about telling everyone else other than still worried about loss & I don't like a million personal questions.
