Since this came up in one of the other threads I was curious to see how people felt about wearing shoes while at home.

It's according to the day. Barefoot/ slippers/socks...today I wore Nikes, because wearing no shoes on our hard floors sometimes hurts my ankles. We don't specifically have a no shoe rule right now, but I think we will once baby is here.

  • We don't have any rules, but I generally wear socks or slippers. But I'm wearing shoes right now.

  • I had to be the special snowflake on this one. No shoes that are worn outside are allowed in the house. But sometimes ill be barefoot, sometimes ill wear slippers, and others ill just rock my socks.
  • We don't let anyone wear shoes in the house, bc of all the germs. I dont wear socks bc I'm always hot and find it uncomfortable. DH and DS love wearing socks all the time.

  • I'm a special snowflake on this one. Same as @yasandson - no shoes that are worn outside are allowed to be worn inside. It changes day to day, but I usually wear slippers or socks inside. If it's warm outside, then barefoot.

I HATE socks and rarely wear them. I grew up in a house where we were never allowed to wear shoes inside, which wore off on me. DH always has his shoes on, and it drives me crazy.

Also, if you wear socks to bed, we can't be friends.

Definitely no shoe wearing in our house because of seven kids and one of them being a crawling baby. We have concrete floors and it's amazing how much dirt and stuff I sweep up each day....bleh.
  • I put need shoes. I don't really. But most of the time I do so I picked that.

  • SS because i don't care what people decide to wear in my house. wear what you feel like!

  • Before kids it would be no shoes in the house. After kids it's flip-flops everywhere because Legos hurt like a mofo
  • Hubby always takes off his shoes and then walks around barefoot or in socks and it drives me insane! Growing up I didn't have a no shoes rule but he did. I have to wear flip flops around the apt because going barefoot was a big no no. My parents are from Dominican Republic and over there being barefoot is associated with poverty so we'd get yelled at for being barefoot.

  • I really dislike it when people walk into my house with shoes. I can cope if it's through to the dining room, but they can't go  the rug with shoes because I freak out. I always wear slippers inside because tiles are too cold.

  • We don't wear shoes in our house! You've been walking around stepping in god knows what all day, don't wanna bring it into the house.  I will allow guests to keep their shoes on if they want to but if they ask if the shoes should be removed, I do ask them to take them off.

Yeah, we remove shoes before entering. Same goes for our guests. Especially with DD, the last thing I want is dirt on the floor.
  • I voted SS.

I take my shoes off because by the end of the day I'm tired of wearing them. We have a dog who comes in and out regularly so I don't feel like shoes or no shoes are going to make much of a difference.

I do make DS take off his shoes before getting on furniture.

I typically go barefoot, but with where we live we have a sand issue so if there's grit I wear socks or house shoes lol
  • Shoes are not allowed in our house. I usually wear socks all the time just because I don't like cold feet. I freak out when my kids or dh walk through the house in shoes. Hell, I can't even stand my dog trotting around the house. Yes, go outside and walk over the dirt and your poops and then come walk on my carpet

  • I literally only wear shoes when I absolutEly have to.  I. Hate. Shoes. and I really hate socks just because finding a matching pair is so D*MN hard.

  • I put SS as there are no rules and my own actions seem to change seasonally. I would probably be more strict if I had more carpet though. Our house is mostly wood and tile.

I guess I'm a ss, too. Socks if my feet are cold, barefoot if they're not. Absolutely no outdoor shoes on in the house and I would never presume to wear my shoes in someone else's house.

I find this poll interesting. We had a similar one on my last BMB and there were an overwhelming number who wore shoes in the house. Completely different here!
  • When I was growing up I was required to wear shoes or slippers in the house. We had tile floors and my mom thought if we walked around on tile barefoot we would get sick, I guess because tile is cold. I think it's one of those old latino women myths though. I swore that's what @winterecho was going to say when she mentioned being from DR. I've never heard of the poverty thing though.

Now I HAVE to wear flip flops because having two dogs, a cat and the fact that DH and I don't take our outside shoes off when we come in the house means a lot of stuff from outside gets dragged in and I can't deal with stepping on all of that. Same with socks. They'd be brown on the bottom. Ew.

Also: I can't stand going outside without shoes on either. It's done a lot around here and it irks me.

  • We wear shoes in the house. It seems like a lot of work to me to take them on and off every time I need to go outside. But we live out in the country, and have inside dogs that track everything inside. So sweeping is a daily task!

We do go barefoot as well, but there's no prohibition against shoes.
  • @feeislove my mom would sometimes say that being barefoot would give us pneumonia lol which is so extreme!

  • @winterecho @feeislove +1 on the pneumonia if you walk barefoot warning from mom, think its an immigrant thing lol.
Another thing she used to say is period cramps would be worse if during the month id walk barefoot (also linked to feet being cold)
  • We wear shoes inside. Or not. Whatever. There are so many things to be afraid of as a new mom...shoes are just one thing I had to decide not to fear.

I am also kinda weird though, because I am one of the people who think that exposure to some germs may actually be a good thing!
  • +1 @winterecho @feeislove
parents associate barefoot with poverty and catching a cold, so growing up we always had shoes on in the house.

Now in my own house we have no rules but generally we wear our daily shoes around the house. I am usually the one to go barefoot or in slippers because I slip my flats off as soon as get home.

  • I didn't realize this as such an issue.  No rules for our house.  I like for shoes to be up and out of site, so mine are usually in my closet.  I come in, go to my closet in the back of the house and usually removed them in exchange for my furry Eskimo house shoes.  We have wood floors and they are usually cold, I can't stand for cold feet.

The one complaint I do have in this department are people who just remove their shoes right in the doorway i.e. my ILs.  I HATE tripping over everyone's stuff just trying to get in or out the door.  This is how DH grew up so I ended up having him make a small closet into a mud room for his shoes.

  • Another SS here - shoes that are worn outside are not worn in the house. If I'm hot, I go barefoot. If I'm cold, I'll wear socks (with the rubber things since our main floor is all hardwood). If I'm doing a lot of walking around I have a pair of house shoes and I have a pair of tennis shoes that I work out in that have never seen the outside of our house.

    Soooo....all of the above?

  • We defiantly do NOT wear shoes in the house here. I have actually never heard of that before. Do you have a special pair of indoor shoes? Or are you wearing the shoes you wear outside in the house...?
  • I'm barefoot 90% of the time but once I have shoes on, I usually don't take them off, and we have a no shoes rule either. I guess that makes me a SS LOL
  • Depending.  We have tile floors and in the winter I have to have slippers or socks.  Now that it's getting warmer I usually have flip flops or go barefoot.
