Trouble TTC

First time IUI

Hi Everyone-

I'm 29 and have been ttc since August 2015. We finally started seeing a specialist at the end of January this year. I was diagnosed with "mild PCOS." I have regular cycles and ovulate, but I have 20+ follicles on each ovary.

I've been taking Metformin since February and my husband and I decided to proceed with IUI this month. I went in for my initial appointment Wednesday and began taking Letrozole (Femara) yesterday. I have severe health anxiety so this whole process is extremely daunting for me. I was up all night fearing something bad would happen from taking the first dose of Letrozole and and even more nervous for when I'll have to take the trigger shot of Ovidrel because I've read it can cause OHSS.

Has anyone been through this process? Are there any bad side effects from the Femara or Ovidrel? I just pray we only have to go through this one time. I'm so exhausted from being heartbroken every month and every near me conceiving so quickly and easily.

I'm super concerned about OHSS.

Thanks in advance.

Re: First time IUI

  • @morga2ke I haven't gone through it myself (yet - I have a consult next week to see an RE) but I know how nerve wracking and anxiety ridden the TTC process can be so wanted to let you know I'm here to talk if you need it. :)

    And wishing you the best!
  • @morga2ke I haven't been through that process, but I do know that the drugs are very commonly used. There is extensive research on the drugs before they are released to market and this captures all noted side effects (as well as when it is on the market). With that being said, I would discuss your concerns and any other current medications and health issues with the doctor as everyone is different and they should best be able to predict any type of reaction. Hoping that you will have a sticky baby with this IUI! Wishing you the best :)

  • @brittlefebvre and @msstephanielynn thank you so much for your kind and thoughtful comments. They mean the world to me. I'm struggling so much right now and just wish I could have a glimmer of hope. Thank you both so much again.
  • @morga2ke Of course. It's not an easy process to go through. But you have support here!
  • Hello and welcome.

DH and I are on our second IUI and this is my 5th cycle on Letrazole.  The only side effect I have ever had when on the Letrazole was that it made me tired. It was manageable, but felt like I was dragging the week I took it.  I had no side effects from the Ovidrel.

From what I have read, most OHSS are mild, with severe cases being pretty rare.  My advice would be to remember that your doctor has already weighed the potential risks of all your medications versus the benefits.  Many people take this medication without getting OHSS or having any side effects.

    GL with your IUI. :)
