we had a lovely little day planned. it was December 11, 2010 and we went to the Patriots Hall of Fame and out to a nice lunch. everything was going swimmingly. I had no idea there was a ring in his pocket...or even that he had bought one. our lunch was served and we got into a debate - who made Tom Brady a superstar? i said that Giselle made him one, bc outside of sports little Sally in Wyoming who doesnt watch football wouldn't know who he was...but since he is with Giselle she might now know. this infuriated H, TB12 is famous all on his own! There we sat at the bar at the hall of fame shouting at each other...we ended our date and when home. no proposal.
2 weeks later on Christmas Eve he did. i wish i got the 1st proposal (i blame Brady) but it was sweet. i literally had no idea he was going to until like 15 min before he did it. all the sudden his weird actions that day started to make sense.
Oh goodie, another excuse to procrastinate on work!
DH and I used to live a short bike ride from the beach, and a lot of nights we would make a little picnic, put my maltese in the bike basket and hang out on the beach. DH had this elaborate plan to propose on one of these beach nights, but like @carries2018, I f*cked it up because, hi it's me. Two days beforehand, I was putting away DH's clean clothes that he just piles on top of the sink and a receipt fluttered to the ground. I picked it up, and lo and behold, it was to Kay Jewelers. Three guesses as to what the receipt was for! I hurriedly replaced the receipt back under the clothes and pretended like I saw nothing. He never knew until fully two years later.
So when he said, "hey let's go for a bike ride to the beach!" two days later, I had a pretty good idea of what was coming. I guess I always say something like, "It's so beautiful here and I'm with the love of my life, how could things get any better!" so DH was planning on being all "HERE'S HOW IT CAN GET BETTER!" after that.
Unfortunately, I said the magic words right when we left the sidewalk, bikes still in hands, nothing set up yet. So DH panicked and did the whole thing anyway, both of us standing up, no ring in sight. I said, "I would love to marry you! But you better get down on one knee and propose right!"
We were in Heidelberg, Germany. Our room at the bed and breakfast overlooked the castle that's lit up at night and we were standing in the dormer window when he asked.
We woke up on Christmas eve morning and he asked me if I would go to church with him to light a candle for his mom (she passed away when DH was 3 years old). I said sure but let's just do it that night since we go to midnight mass every Christmas eve. He was adamant that he didn't want to do it that night, and he wanted to go after breakfast. So we went and the church was locked! I said oh well we can come back tonight. He was determined to get into the church though. So we found an open door and went in. We stood in front of a beautiful statue and lit a candle for his mom. When we were done he said I have something to ask you as he was already getting down on one knee! I was shocked. We had discussed getting engaged in the next year or so but I didn't see that one coming.
Mine makes me look like a total biotch, but whatevs. I swear I'm not a horrible person.
We'd only been dating for 1.5 years, the first year of which was pretty rocky (it was our final year of college, DH was a dick, etc.) Nothing serious, but just drama. Anyways, we'd only been doing really well for about 6 months, and I had absolutely no idea he was even considering proposing at that point.
It was Memorial Day 2010, and we spent the day just wandering around the city, going to the market, etc. Down by the river, there are these steps that lead to nowhere, you just walk up the steps and then stand at the top over the river and take in the scenery I guess. Anyways, we walked up there to check it out, stood there for a few minutes, and then started walking back down. On the way down, I said "what, you're not going to propose to me?", because this was a super cliche spot to get engaged. We're very sarcastic and that wouldn't be out of the ordinary for us to joke like that, but DH got all pissy and weird. I didn't think anything of it at the time. We continued on our adventure and ended up down by the lake, where he then proposed. While our dog was taking a sh*t.
Poor DH had been carrying the ring around in his pocket looking for the right spot all day. He considered the spot overlooking the river, but had decided not to once we got up there because it was too cliche. And then I made that comment. But yea, I felt pretty horrible.
October 2017 June Siggy Challenge -- "You Had One Job!"
@bluejeanbabi05 If it's any consolation, I'm a frumpy-looking 41 year old who drives a 15 passenger van and often forgets to brush my hair and usually has spit-up on my shirt...so totally not impressive, lol
We didn't have a "real" proposal but it was perfect for us, because I'm a commitment-phobe and DH had been married before so he was extra cautious. We had been talking about getting married in the future, and then we started having some random signs that made us think maybe it was the right time. Then one day I went to an eye appointment with DH and the doctor said "Your wife can come back too if she wants!" DH looked at me and smiled and said "Are you coming honey?" Then that night while we were making dinner we randomly talked about how the doctor called me his wife, and then he said something like "I liked the sound of that. Do you want to be my wife?" And I said yes, and then we basically immediately started planning. Thanks, eye doc!
There is a waterfall where we lived at the time and we always went in the Spring when all the snow melted. I made the plans like I always do so obviously I didn't think anything was up. He popped the question on the first lookout which was apparently not his plan but he got nervous and just did it right off the bat. It was very simple but sweet.
He snuck into my house. I was on the phone with him while I was on the elliptical in the basement and heard a funny noise. I was like "ummm, think my brother fell out of bed." and he was like "no, it's me. I'm in your house." (ummm...ok, kinda creepy) so I went upstairs and he was standing there and pulled the ring out of his pocket. He just stood there. Eventually I had to kind of shake him and be like "say the thing" and then he asked me.
@boobopgirl your proposal story made me lol and im supposed to be working on a project right now.

Me and DH are kind of nerdy. We both get really excited about the renaissance festival every year, and have played world of warcraft for 10 years. So DH proposed to me in one of the beer gardens at ren fest, and he was having a family reunion that weekend so we kind of had a big celebration as well. It was cute. Man I really want a turkey leg and some pumpkin beer right now.

DH planned a great date in NYC. He took me to my favorite restaurant in Little Italy. We had an amazing dinner, followed by desert at my favorite pastry shop in Little Italy. Then we drove to Rockafeller Center. He took me to the "Top of The Rock", and proposed on the 69th floor observation deck overlooking the gorgeous NYC skyline. It was so thoughtful and sweet. He did a great job!
We laugh about him not getting down on his knee because it was absolutely FREEZING outside (March). I told him when he proposes again for our vow renewal one day (even though he says it wont happen) that he has to get down on his knee. LOL. Hey, a girl can dream, right?
It started out with him pissing me off. I was going to a bachelorette thing with friends and he kept bugging about when I would be home, how long I was gonna be, etc etc. When I did come home he had our entire condo covered in candles and rose petals. Romantic music playing. He gave me a back massage, popped the question when what we called "our song" (at the time) came on, and we celebrated with my favorite ice cream. I'm not one for public spectacles so I'm glad it happened at home.
Ours wasn't anything extravagant. DH had been at boot camp then the school after his boot camp for about 6 months. I didn't get to go to his graduation because of college/tests. So, it had been a long time since we had seen one another. He came home for Christmas. The day we picked him up from the airport (he was staying with me at my mom's house in separate rooms lol), he walked me to my room to tell me goodnight and surprisingly got down and proposed. He said he couldn't wait any longer and it was the day before Christmas Eve, so he knew I'd want to tell our family at the Christmas get togethers haha.
@ChocolateIsLife Yay for another nerdy couple, me and DH have played WoW together for about 10 years too lol.
He was packing to leave for a summer job across the country and he said "hey can you open that bottom drawer for me?" So I did and the ring was in there. He was so nervous he proposed on both knees instead of one! It was May 2012 and we got married July 2013.
I have the worst proposal story ever. I ruined it. I knew he was going to do it and kept pestering him with what he got me for our dating anniversary. He gave up and proposed on the side of our bed like a week before he wanted to. Still cute but damn, I ruined it. I keep dropping hints I want a re do for our 10 year anniversary - in 2 years.
Ours is nothing fancy and makes me kind of sad. Dh and I had only been dating 6 weeks and it was valentine's day. I worked in a floral shop and ended up working an extra 2 hours than scheduled. We finally managed to go out to dinner...with my parents...at village Inn lol.
Afterwards we went back to his house (he lived with his parents). Watched some tv but I started getting a stomach ache from dinner. We were laying on the couch in the basement and he just got down on one knee and asked. Super simple lol. I said yes and then his mom came down to change out the laundry and goes "so?" And dh goes "she said no" so she replied "smart girl". Awkward. Anyways, I ended up going home shortly after since my stomach hurt. My mom was still up, so I told her. She wasn't thrilled, but I wouldn't be either if my just-turned-19yo came home and told me they're engaged to someone they had only been dating 6 weeks.
On his bday in 2015 I took him to a Yankees game. I don't really care one way or another about baseball but he's a super mega fan. After the game we went to his mom's house where he was having a bbq for his bday celebration. I went to the backyard to go into the garage to wash my hands in the bathroom. He followed behind me and asked where I was going. I turned around to say I was washing my hands and then saw he was down on one knee.
Him: (down on one knee with the ring in his hand) Do you like it? Me: (heart about to pound out of my chest) Isn't there something else you'd like to ask? Him: Will you marry me? Me: (numb in shock) Yes!
DH set up some clues starting off from his house where I thought I was meant to pick him up but he wasn't there. I got my first clue from his mum. After about 5 different clues I ended up at a hotel by the beach and found him in a love heart shape of tealight candles in a suit. He got down on one knee and proposed. It was pretty awesome.
Funny part of the story, I felt like a hooker when I asked for the key at the concierge because I was all dolled up and it was kinda weird to be asking for a key to an occupied room LOL.
He popped the question while we were on a hike with the pooch. It was a totally unexpected and private moment between us. I wanted it to be done privately when the time came so it was perfect.
DH and I are huge sports fans, especially the Detroit Tigers. So in 2012, when they made it to the World Series my husband snagged tickets to Games 4 & 5 in Detroit without me knowing. At the time we were living in Minnesota, so he told me we were going back to MI to visit family. On the day of Game 4 he said someone he knew had 2 extra tickets he was getting rid of because the Tigers were down 3-0 in the series so my DH bought them. We arrived to the game super early because they were standing room only tickets and we wanted to get the best view. We ended up going down by the field to take pictures and when we were sitting right on top of the Tigers dugout, he proposed! It was absolutely miserable outside, but I couldn't have asked for a more perfect setting for a proposal!!
We were on a houseboat trip with my family, and we had to leave a day early because he had to work the next day. It happened to be at the same lake where my family used to camp every year, and where we had had our first kiss five years earlier. On the drive out, he wanted to drive around the lake to "get our bearings" and try to find our first kiss spot. When we got there, we parked and walked down to the beach and he proposed there. It was perfect for us!
Convinced me to go on a walk, only to dash back to his place saying something about changing his shoes. Stood there for a few minutes before he returned and was acting weird. I thought he was going to break up with me! We got to a grassy area and decided to look at the stars. After a bit, he started talking about spending his life with me and brings out a ring. I legitimately do not know if I said yes because i was in shock! I willingly married him so it all balances out, right?!
I knew it was coming unfortunately, thanks to his dad. I read a text from him because DH was driving and it said something like 'let me know when she gives you an answer, love you guys'
Anyway, we went to a really nice resort in Glen Arbor MI in October.... I love looking at the fall colors. We had been there the year before and went on a nice little hike that ended with a beautiful view of Lake Michigan. We did that hike again the next year and as we were getting ready to leave I mentioned something about needing to take more selfies and he said 'well how about you wear this for the selfie?' So he didn't actually say the words 'will you marry me?' But it was cute and very much us.
He proposed on Christmas Eve, it was my Christmas gift. DH doesn't have a romantic bone in his body and he's terrible at surprises or planning anything. So the fact that he hide my ring in m&ms that said "will you marry me" and wrapped it and hide it really well under the tree was a total shock to me. I love it because it's the one thing he put thought into being romantic.
It was the Saturday before Easter. He made brunch reservations at this beautiful hotel in town. Poor thing barely touched his food because he decided to propose afterwards. He still regrets waiting til after we ate, lol!
So we had planned to go to NYC right after my birthday...we had only been dating like 8 months but we had talked about marriage and he knew what kind of rings I liked so I thought it might be coming soon. I had mentioned I thought it would be so romantic to get engaged during a carriage ride through Central Park and I knew he had scheduled one for our trip but he had specifically said "you know I'm not proposing right?" and something about not having the guts to ask my mom permission yet (honestly, I never should've requested that). Well we go to NYC, we had a fun time walking around and get to central park and he's like frantically looking for a specific carriage he booked. While looking we both got pooped on by pigeons (he was mortified). We got in the carriage and after a bit he pulled out the ring and I said "what are you doing?" and he's like "well I guess I could do it later" and goes to put the box away and I'm like what the heck! So he proposes and I said yes and he had picked the exact ring I wanted, it was all perfect (except the poop). It was a good day
My husband proposed on Christmas eve. We had been talking about getting engaged soon and I told him it was on my Christmas list. He had said it would be closer to valentine's day to throw me off. We were visiting my family for the holidays and we went for a walk down by the river front and were on a bridge near sunset and he proposed. He tried to throw me off by giving me a random bracelet first and then went down on one knee and was sort of in the snow. I think I said "you are in the snow" before I said yes. It was funny. He had my family in on the proposal and a family friend took pictures from a parking garage near by of us getting engaged. It was a nice day for sure.
I hadnt seen my parents for 5 yrs so summer of 15 i went down to Morocco, for 3 weeks. He took his mom to Cuba for 2 weeks. It was the first time we had been separated for more than 2 hours (we met at work, and the day we started dating is the day we moved in together. Sounds weird but i came in to chill one evening... And he just never let me leave lol). We had been together 2 years then. I was so conviced he was the one after my nasty first marriage that i just flat out told my parents about him, which is not something us arabs do, unless your announcing your wedding lol. Little did I know, meanwhile in Cuba he was asking his mom for her blessing (she didnt agree with his 1st marriage and it fxcked up). So when he came back from his 2 weeks vaca i still had a week in Morocco, and we'd talk on Whatsapp. He was so excited he didnt wait and just asked me to marry him over the phone. He now jokes about being scared of me leaving him for a sexy surfer since i was spending my days on the beach with the fam. ❤️
Eta i had been divorced for only a year when we met, and he had been for about three months. ( his x wife knocking at our door at all hours when she found out) .
@sjohns08 oh wow! Just after 6 weeks?!?! That's a crazy story! Congratulations on proving everyone wrong 9 years on
@buttercream_frosting yep, we started dating on NYE and got engaged on valentine's day! We met in October once, didn't see each other again until right before Christmas. It was an absolute whirlwind lol. You always hear people say the old cliche "when you know, you know" and that was us. Young, dumb and in love that's not to say we haven't had our issues, but that's marriage, right? Lol
We had been dating for about a year and we were both going to be graduating college. He had just gotten back from a school trip and was visiting my parents house for thanksgiving break. I had been telling him that I wouldn't be moving from NY to VA without some sort of commitment and had been dropping lots of hints that he should pop the question. So we were sitting around my parents house and I tossed a newspaper flyer from a jewelry store at him and he got a little pissy about it and said I already got you one...I didn't believe him so I said prove it! He went to his car and came back with a ring box and tossed it at me.
so not romantic at all but we are going on 10 years of marriage and it works for us lol!
We went on a snowboarding trip with our friends and stayed in a cabin. Let me just say I HATE when people try to "help" me with something that i know how to do and they're just making it more difficult (it's relevant to the story, i promise). So anyway, we're on the mountain and i am focused on strapping in. I was having an issue with the buckle on my bindings and DH bent down on one knee and was trying to "help me" I got so annoyed and was yelling "leave me alone! Damn i can do it without your help." He is like "babe, will you just stop for a sec and look at me." I hear our friends snickering and i look up to see him one knee and the ring pulled out. He said "I was trying to be romantic. But will you marry me..." Haha. So us.
I just love how so many of these stories are "real". It gets depressing watching TV and movies with all these super perfect and romantic proposals. But in real life, one person is grumpy or ruins it somehow and I love how that shows in here
I was spending lots of nights at DHs apartment because my upstairs neighbors were the worst. I usually packed a bag with a few days clothes and on one particular long day I forgot to pack a sweater to wear for work the next day. I had worked very late, not eaten, and gotten to his apartment much later than I wanted to. So I did what most grown adults do when they've had a long day - I fell on the floor and pouted right there at the top of the stairs.
Sweet sweet patient DH comes over and laughs at me but then lays on the floor with me. He asked me about my day and then switched the convo to what would make this day better. We had been talking about moving back home and getting a house. So he started talking about the kinds of houses we would like and asking me about the size yard and which city. But then I said if we save for that we can't take a big trip like we've been trying to do. More pout. So he brought up New Zealand - he knew it was my dream honeymoon. So for fun we started planning our honeymoon on the floor of his apartment. And he said something about well before we have a honeymoon we need to have a wedding and he jokingly started talking about who his groomsmen would be and asking what colors I would like. Again we had already talked about some of these hypotheticals so I didn't think anything of it. And then he said well before we get married we'd have to be engaged first and I laughed and teased him that after 4 years I wasn't getting my hopes up! Lol so he laughed and said yeah well you never know.
At that point I started to feel better and was about to get up off the floor when he got up to get me Kleenex for my tears. When he came back he laid back down with me and opened the box! Said something witty about this should make your day better!
Lol it's not a castle or a beach - but I love our story.
We live in Las Vegas and I always wanted to ride the gondolas on the strip. So we went down there and he was all lovey and kissy and so I knew it coming. He couldn't get down on one knee on the boat though.
Re: GTKY: how did H propose?
2 weeks later on Christmas Eve he did. i wish i got the 1st proposal (i blame Brady) but it was sweet. i literally had no idea he was going to until like 15 min before he did it. all the sudden his weird actions that day started to make sense.
this debate is still a sore spot in our marriage.
