First Birthday!

Now that our LOs are around 6 months old and we've realized how quickly time flies... anyone else thinking about their first birthday? I'm not "planning" it per day, but I am starting to come up with ideas!

So what are you doing?

Just familg? Friends too?

Any theme?

Also, any good recipes for a healthy smash cake? I haven't given my LO any sugar (besides natural such as fruit) and don't really want too.

Re: First Birthday!

  • Since LO loves guac so much I think we might do smash tacos instead because: Tacos :)

  • Loading the player...
  • Probably just family here, no "theme", just your generic birthday stuff (because I prefer it), I have baked all of my children their first cake/smash cake/cupcakes, and will do so again!

@kgridley27 If it weren't for tradition, I would steal your idea because yes, TACOS! <3
  • I just plan to do something small with close friends and family.  So not including us, will be about 7 people.  No theme, just generic birthday stuff like @allythekid said.  I will go to the grocery store and get the free cake for baby's first birthday and purchase one for the rest of us.  I don't think it makes sense to have a big bash for their first birthday because they won't remember it.  When she is 3, I will start having bigger events.
  • @AllyTheKid new tradition of day-after-first-birthday tacos, here we come!
  • @Ladybug2821 ummmm...free cake?
  • So as far as a first birthday party goes, I haven't even begun to think of a theme.  I do already have a guest list, though, because it's the same guest list that's invited to every family party.  It will be about 50 people, all family.  I know, it sounds like a lot. No, my house will not be big enough.  Hope we have good weather come the end of October this year.

For family parties I usually end up doing a "build your own" bar of some sort of food, and I have done a "build your own burrito bowl bar" before.  If I end up sticking with a taco smash I could probably go with that theme.

  • @kgridley27 If you decide to do a "build a burrito" bar, make that guest list 51 ;)
  • @kgridley27 Yep, free!  I know the grocery stores in MD and FL both give a free small birthday cake just for the baby.  Which I'm assuming people use as the smash cake.  FFFC, I never heard of a smash cake until the bump.
  • I wish they offered free cakes here! We're thinking about doing family and a few family friends.. so maybe 20-25 people. And we'll have it here at the house
  • @Kgridley27 Can you share your Guac recipe please?!

@fitlady21 Here is the recipe I will use for LO's cake

    Sugar-free Carrot and Date Cake
makes 8″ cake or 12 cupcakes

    1 2/3c  flour
    3 tsp baking powder
    1 tsp ground nutmeg
    1 tsp ground cinnamon
2/3 cup dates pitted and finely chopped
    1/3c shredded unsweetened coconut
    1/2cup butter, melted
1/2 cup raisins- soaked in hot water then drained
1 cup grated carrot (about 1 large carrot)
    2 tbsp milk
    2 eggs, lightly beaten

    Frosting
1 cup cream sweetened with 1 tablespoon maple syrup and sprinkles to decorate (optional)

    Method

Preheat oven to 300°F. Lightly grease an 8″ round cake tin** and line the bottom with baking parchment paper.

Sift the flour, baking powder and ground spices together. Give it a good stir to make sure it’s evenly combined. Stir through the dates and coconut.

Combine the melted butter, raisins, carrot and milk then  add to the dry ingredients and mix gently until evenly combined. You should have a very thick mixture. Add the eggs and stir.

Spoon into the prepared tin and bake in the oven for 45 – 60 minutes (about 30 mins for cupcakes) until done when tested with a skewer.

Remove from the oven and allow to cool for 5 minutes, then turn onto a wire rack, removing the  paper, to cool completely. Store wrapped in foil until ready to use. Decorate just before serving.

  • @brzvice That sound great! Thanks for sharing!!
  • @fitlady21 it's really a non-recipe. For one mashed avocado I just squeeze about half a lime, a good pinch of kosher salt and lots of black pepper. Sometimes I put a little cayenne in. If I have cilantro I'll use it, same with garden tomatoes, seeded and chopped. Basically I wing it every single time
  • I decided on a theme today for V's first birthday..Being the bargain Hunter that I am I saw a 50%off mylar balloon bin at my Kroger's. They had giant bumblebee shaped balloons that are so perfect for my little busy bee. I just googled bee themed party and Lawdy lawd  there are so many cute ideas I need to sort through. I will most likely Etsy a black and yellow" 1" outfit for the big day with her name embroidered on it. Also it being close to Halloween there will be a plethora of bee costume options.

  • I'm still only having a small gathering but I guess I do have a theme now that I think about it. S loves Mickey Mouse.  The cakes will be Mickey themed and, I'll see if I can find some other cheap Mickey stuff.
  • We're just doing a pink theme haha. I'm excited about it though!
  • We are fast approaching LO birthday's ladies  :'(:'(

V also really hit a growth spurt the last month. She was always behind in clothes sizes but somehow only wore 6-9 months for a hot minute and now is in primarily 12 months sizing.  She will be in size 4 diapers in the next couple weeks once I run out of 3's

  • Johnny and Jimmy are both in size 5 diapers and Johnny wears between 12-18 month clothes. Poor Jimmy inherited my runt gene and I think Johnboy is going to be a behemoth like his daddy
  • My LO is in size 4 diapers and have been for months! She's also in 12-18 month clothes.

  • I hope she had an amazing day! She looks so cute and sugar drunk haha
  • So this small birthday party is starting the get expensive. Originally I was just going to have family over for cake and to sing happy birthday at 3:00. But H has to work that evening so I had to change the time to 11:00 so now I feel obligated to feed everyone. I'm just going to make it easy and get a few pizzas. All the other little stuff keeps adding up. I have to order a cake for everyone and get the ingredients to make Storm her own vegan cake. I tried to go the cheap route and made her onesie and bday hat. Then there's the tutu, the decor for the cake, and high chair. Oh yeah and her presents...I'm now broke.
  • @brzvice cute pictures!! She's adorable!

@Ladybug2821 ugh yes it does get expensive! I easily spent at least $800 not including presents... just don't tell my husband haha. Next year I plan on only inviting close family and just doing hamburgers and cake.

@brzvice So cute!  How was she with keeping the tutu on?  I tried S's tutu on her and she just kept pulling at it. Hoping she'll get over the fascination of it quick during her party.

@fitlady21 Girl!!! $800??  I'm not even close to that lol. I'm just super cheap and really didn't plan for a real party like it's turning out to be.
  • @Ladybug2821 I went way overboard! Spent $250 in food. $100 on cake. $75 on her outfit. $150 in pumpkins and paint. And several hundred on decorations and flowers. Good thing she only turns 1 once! Haha

Are you having a lot of guests?  It's only going to be 8 adults including H and I (all family with the exception of 1 friend) and 1 kid. So not a major event.
  • @Ladybug2821 we ended up having 35 people. Tons of fun but tons of work!
  • Birthday outfit is finished.
