Any other plus size Mama's?

Hey ladies,
I was wondering if there are any other plus size mother's to be? I am kinda hoping for others who get the whole feeling of not want to post belly pics or people assuming you are farther along due to a larger belly. I am so excited for this baby but I always kinda hoped to have that cute little bump right away and I know it will take a little while before you will see my bump instead of just my belly rolls LOL

  • Me! I so know those feels!
  • Loading the player...
  • I'm plus sized now, which is a big change from my first pregnancy. It has me a bit bummed.

*TW* I suffered a MC in 2015, and my weight increased significantly since then. */TW*
  • @missrekaeagle sorry to hear about your loss I can't imagine.

Thank God for the responses because I am having such a hard time with it, like my SILs and my one sis were tiny and had that like picturesque cute big belly with zero extra weight and I am here like, no I swear it's only 11 weeks not 25...  :|
  • Me too! Especially now that a cousin just announced that she is a month ahead of me and I couldn't even tell she was pregnant. I look vastly pregnant with all the bloat.

  • @Asivec OMG yes all the bloat, so much bloat! I am constantly complaining to DH about that. I seriously had to start wearing stretchy jeans/leggings at like week 8 because of it!
  • I'm a plus size mama. I'm at my heaviest with this pregnancy. Never worried about if I will show until this time.  Hopefully I start showing by 20 weeks.
  • Me too! I'm a FTM and very nervous about what to expect.  I have so much bloat and feel like I am already 8 months pregnant.
  • I'm definitely about there. I've been much heavier but definitely feel too fat. It takes me forever to show but once I do I am like a house and everyone asks if I'm having twins. This time around I already can't button my pants--must be the magic of number 3!

  • I consider myself plus size. I wear size 18 pants and xl shirts when not pregnant which is on the large side of what I consider "regular" sizes. All I can say is don't be discouraged if you don't get the cute, little bump. I was hoping for that with my first but I carried like a watermelon and felt like I just looked fat. I was 8 months pregnant and people couldn't tell.
  • So sorry for your loss @missrekaeagle

I so know the feeling @KLink15 I'm a FTM and I definitely fit into this category. I carry more of my weight in my hips and booty but I wonder when I will start showing!
  • Me! I didn't take many bump pics with either of my 2 previous pregnancies because I feel like I just always looked fat, not pregnant, and I felt silly. I'm 9 weeks 3 days but I look 9 months pregnant because I carry my weight in my belly to begin with. I am having twins this time and I'm scared of the weight I could gain (although I lost weight with both my previous singleton pregnancies). It makes me sad that I don't have the adorable round, obviously baby bump, ever during my pregnancies. I still tried my best to enjoy my pregnancies though and brush off the hurtful comments. It's not always easy though.

  • I'm also plus size. With my son, I didn't look pregnant until about 6 or 7 months but I think me having a long torso also contributed to that as well since baby had a ton of room to grow. My friend was plus size during her pregnancy but is much shorter than I am and popped around 5 months.

  • I started as a size 4 with my son and gained over 60 lbs with him then developed Graves' disease and lost my thyroid and gained an additional 30. I lost 20 of that this year and am hoping not to gain more than 8lbs with this pregnancy. I'm now a 12 in pants and shirts are L or XL. I do feel like it will take longer to show than I did with my son. I was so small one day my belly just popped out! Not happening now  :#
  • I am 2x/20ish and SUPER short... 5'1". I started to show with my first around 5 months. I think it has more to do with the shape of your body as to when you show. I have some taller girlfriends who are thin, but barely showed at 6 or so months because the babe had more room to stretch.
  • @missrekaeagle I'm in the same boat as you!  I wasn't tiny then, but I wasn't plus size either.  Dealing (or not dealing) with all of the fallout from 2015 just affected me a lot, mentally and physically.  I carry a lot of weight in my belly, as well, so I would sometimes get asked about my pregnancy even when I wasn't pregnant.  That made being a loss mama that much harder.  Now, I can tell things are shifting around and moving up, so I don't know.  I've lost weight so far, but already have my first stretch marks.  I have no idea what's going on with my body, but I certainly don't want to take pics of it.  :/

  • @SweetMelissa4 I'm sorry for your loss and that you had to endure insensitive comments (even if they were well intentioned)

I hope everyone finds something you love about your pregnant body. You are doing something amazing that takes a lot of strength and endurance.

Even so, it can be hard to feel positive about your body, especially if no one seems to notice your awesome bump. It's ok to feel bummed. If this happens, I suggest getting some maternity tops that cinch/tie under the boobs and start touching your belly more. People will pick up on it then. Mamas-to-be touch their bellies in a way plus size ladies don't!

I don't want to be a lurker, but I also don't know how the group feels about this overweight mama-to-be participating in this thread. Right now, I'm not considered plus by some standards (5'2", 160 lb, wearing size 14 jeans at the moment with the pregnancy bloat). However, I've had my share of body image issues. Topped out about 205 when pregnant with DD. Took 2 years for me to lose the weight  despite 10 months bf, in part due to an unrecognized intolerance to folic acid (not the natural folate), 2 MC, 3 family members passing, and a lot of family drama!

Please excuse the book. Lots of love to you ladies!
  • I am definitely in this boat, I was trying really hard to lose weight before this pregnancy due to my body issues. With DD I didn't look pregnant until Very late and because of this I only have one picture of myself when I was expecting and I feel very guilty about that now that DD is asking about what it was like when we were expecting her....I'm hoping to get over my own issues a little more this time. It it is so hard, when we don't look the way we want to, to feel good about being excited.
  • Me! I also carry most of my weight in my stomach. I know I won't look pregnant for a very long time. I lost 50 pounds before getting pregnant, but I have a lot more to lose after baby!

  • @alparodi that is so sweet and true of you to say! We ARE doing something amazing! Good idea with the maternity tops.

Also, in my opinion, you are more than welcome to join/participate in thread! I think it's fair to say that everyone has some sort of body image insecurities and we are all here to support and encourage one another as you have already done for us with your sweet words!
  • I'm in the same boat as all of you. Although did realize one plus to it today. As I told my boss and a close friend at work, I realized I at least should be able to hide it from the rest of my co-workers and students until I'm ready to tell.  I just hope it's more obvious by the time we go back in the fall!

I did have a meeting with an MFM today (referred to b/c of age), and that did make me a bit more nervous with talk of weight based complications, but I'm just trying to take it one delay at a time.

  • I went to Kohl's and destination maternity today. Not a single piece of plus maternity wear in store. Guess I'll have to order online.  I feel like a lot of regular plus size clothes will fit throughout pregnancy though.  Any plus STM have any tips???
  • I spent a boat load on maternity clothes last time and I want to spend less this time since it will be my last but I'm a totally different size now. Where are the inexpensive places to buy maternity clothes that look professional?
  • Even though this is my second time around this will basically be my first round with maternity clothes, I had one pair of pants and a skirt last time but I wore a uniform to work and I didn't do much outside of work, mostly I wore dresses that allowed room for baby so I would love to know where to go as well without breaking the bank...
  • I recently saw a good sale on zulily for maternity clothes. They sometimes have great deals. I saw jeans as low as 15 bucks which I thought was cheap.

Rant: found all my maternity pants from 2013 all in great shape but I realize I now have more weight on my thighs as a result they don't fit just the way they used to. And rise up a little. Ugh. Maybe I can do some thigh toning excersizes or...just chuck them and buy brand new.
  • Im here too. I wear size 16/18 pants and XL/2X shirts when not pregnant. I am also short (5"3). Although I am about the same weight I have been with all of mine, I am defiantly thicker in the middle and finding it more difficult to find things that fit me right now. I typically like full panel maternity pants and those tend to help me look more prego. I also like maternity cut tops as they too tend to help you look more pregnant than just chunky!

  • @kmnat18, do you have any outlet malls near you? The Destination Maternity store near me has plus size but they are expensive. I usually hit them up at the outlet malls. Also, check out thrift stores. I found a few pairs of jeans there.

  • Oh good idea!  I will check!

Also - curious about everyones experience with ultrasounds.  Have you been successful in having abdominal ultrasounds or do you always end up having transvaginal ultrasounds?   How is your luck with the heart monitor in your OBs office? Does anyone have issues?
  • @kmnat18 I am 230 pounds and am 5ft 8in. I found baby's heartbeat on my doppler yesterday. It was the first time I heard it. During my first pregnancy, my doctor never had any issues finding it either. And if you go to the ultrasound thread, I just posted an ultrasound picture that was done on Friday. It was an abdominal ultrasound so you'll have no problems with them :)

  • I just had an abdominal ultrasound with sucesss at my 12 week check up. I'm heaviest this pregnancy but abdominal ultrasounds have always worked.

Do your doctors have you do any extra tests? Mine want me to do an early glucose test at 16 weeks and a 24 hour urine collection. I think she said the 24 hour urine was because I'm AMA-just turned 35! I'm annoyed at that one.
  • I had to do a glucose test when they took blood at my 7w appointment! Is that normal in the USA? I gave birth to my other 2 in Africa and I did t have to do it.

  • @Airynn Chica they are making me do my first gucose test at 10 weeks next week. I'll have to do it at least two more times

  • I had to do a glucose test with all of my initial blood work.
  • @kmnat18 I had an abdominal ultrasound at 8 weeks with no problem!

@Airynn Chica, I have to do an early glucose tolerance due to my PCOS and increased risk for GD, but I think it won't be for a few more weeks (9+4 now). They did check my A1C with my initial blood work and it was fine, and that is pretty standard to check.

  • Plus sized STM here and the weight gain in this pregnancy is ridiculous!! And even tho I have a little not majestic but big enough bump, I just wish that folks can see the bump before "my belly"
  • I have never had issues with ultrasounds and or doppler. At my appt on Monday, the doctor -who I have mentioned on another thread that I have begun to detest - was trying to use the doppler SO low. In fact he was right on my section scar. I tried to remind him that I have a couple of fibroids that are making the baby up higher. It hurt so bad and we were never able to hear the HB. Of course he sent me for a u/s and they actually listened to me, once they got above the scar tissue and looked "down" for the baby they found it right away! Other than that I have never had issues.

I have never had to do an early glucose screening, but I have never had a single issues with blood sugar. I have always passed the 1 hr tests.

I had an US last week (11w4d), and they did it transvaginally, which I was ok with.  No harder pressing, and the pictures they got were great, so it was worth it.  That appointment was with the MFM, and I have my regular ob tonight.  I'm curious to see what they do at this appointment.

Edit: they did an abdominal is tonight to check the heart beat and it went great. Crappy picture, but that didn't bother me one bit.

  • Motherhood has a plus size line! I order online and return in store if needed, more of a selection to choose from that way.  I find them to be true to size.  The Jessica simpson bootcut jeans are fantastic, and most of their plus size tops are nice and long and leave room for a bigger bust.  Pinkblush has an extensive plus size collection that I have not yet tried but hope to get a few cute basics to mix and match for the summer!

  • I just ordered a dress and shirt from pink blush this morning. It honestly looks like they might work even when not pregnant which is awesome. Fingers crossed!

  • I am going to try to find mostly summery dresses that can also be worn after baby to help with how horribly hot I'm going to be this summer and hopefully find some sweaters for fall....I have never liked shopping for clothes and maternity clothes are no different..ugh
