Vaccines

Re: Vaccines

@PinkPrincessPiper - from what I've read, that seems to be the criticism (big pharma making money/pulling one over) but I completely agree - the science backs up significant benefits (which I just looked up a couple of hours ago - FTM here so this LO currently won't be up for it for over a decade). Anyways, I hope I didn't perpetuate any misconceptions - just because the marketing wasn't clear about it not preventing all types of cervical cancer doesn't mean that it doesn't prevent a good number (looks like at least 70% of cervical cancer cases and a 50%+ of good number of other, rarer cancers as well). My degree is in marketing so I find the whole dynamic interesting and wish they had taken a different approach. A simple Google search shows the benefits in a much more factual way but if people are already mistrusting of vaccines, this gave them the "excuse" they were looking for to oppose the HPV vaccine.

  • My mom used to work for an obgyn and as soon as the gardasil shots became available, my sister and I got them. Definitely will be getting them for my boys.
  • When the HPV vaccine first came out, I was living in the Atlanta area and had a brand new OBGYN who hadn't been out of school long. She pressured me big time to get it but I turned it down. I was just a few months away from the age cutoff for it too (not sure if it's still the same now). I felt like she was pressuring me because she'd get a kick back from how many she gave. It just all seemed so sketchy. By my next annual appointment, I was living in a different state and that OBGYN found my massive ovarian cyst. I still wonder if the OBGYN in Atlanta was so concentrated on the vaccine that she missed my cyst. Anyway, looking back, I would have gotten the vaccination had it not seemed so sketchy then.

  • My concern with Gardasil is that it is pushed at a young age (some of my patients have been getting it at 9 or 10). Does the immunity wear off by the time they are engaging in sexual activity? Plenty of us on this forum have lost immunity to MMR. I lost my chicken pox immunity between college and residency. I wonder if the same can be true for HPV immunity?

  • Yes. Herd immunity begins with herd immunity

I don't even think my kid would be allowed in daycare and public school without vaccines.

I have to have TDAP for Baby next month. Not looking forward to it because of crazy shoulder/arm pain. Whine whine whine.
Have them give you the shot in your booty instead. Hurts less since there is more "meat" there than your arm. With my last pregnancy it was a life saver and hurt so much less!

  • I got the Tdap shot when I was pregnant with DS and just found out that you have to get another Tdap shot with every pregnancy. Just an FYI because I had no idea. This is from the CDC website.

It is important for women to get the whooping cough vaccine in the third trimester of each pregnancy. Vaccines are the best way to prevent this disease. There are 2 different whooping cough vaccines. Both vaccines combine protection against whooping cough, tetanus and diphtheria, but they are for different age groups:

    • Tdap: for everyone 11 years and older, including pregnant women
    • DTaP: for children 2 months through 6 years of age

  • @britvahok but I don't wanna get it again. I just told DH how glad I was I didn't have to get it again. I guess it makes sense so the antibodies definitely pass to baby. Damnit
  • @SouthernMama15 I know! I thought it was good for at least 10 years  :)

I'm glad to know, though. I'm sure my doctor would have told me, but now I have time to mentally prepare. I'm not scared of needles, but that ahot hurt and I'm dreading having a toddler to pick up with a sore arm.
  • Did your DH get the TDap shot? My doctor has me getting in at my next appointment, and my sisters family has it from when her DD was born, but I doubt my DH has gotten it, and it seems like something he should.

  • @smallbutmighty77 yup, and grandparents
  • Is y'alls dr making you get the shot? Nobody has ever mentioned it to me until now! I see him on the third so I'll definitely ask. You guys said both you and your DH got it??
  • kvh22kvh22 member
@smallbutmighty77 Yes - DH will just ask for it at his annual checkup as will my mom and we've asked his parents as well (like @SouthernMama15 said). I tried to let everyone know as early as possible so that they could hopefully just bring it up at their annual.

  • Yes, DH and grandparents/family that will be around LO should get the shot. I was just wondering if DS needed to get another shot. Here is the schedule for kids. I can't remember if he got a shot when he turned 4 so I need to find out from his pedi.

Children should get 5 doses of DTaP vaccine, one dose at each of the following ages:
    • 2 months
    • 4 months
    • 6 months
    • 15–18 months
     • 4–6 years

Holy crap. If my body hurts after a TDAP, imagine how these poor children feel! Hugging my future baby already!!

  • @DeansGirl14 I was worried about that, too, but I think that's part of the reason it's split up that way and also, babies are more fat than muscle, so hopefully it doesn't make them as sore.

    Oh. Good point. Phew.

  • I was wondering if I needed to get another TDap. I'll ask at my next appointment. Also, I had allergy shots for 6 years. I'm basically impervious to shots at this point in my life. It's like the world's shittiest super power.

  • @DeansGirl14 my pedi gives babies shots in their thighs until they're 1. DS barely cried at his shots when he was a baby. Now we have to hold him down and he becomes the Incredible Hulk but I think that's only because he knows he's about to get a shot.

  • DS is almost 2 and they still do his in the thigh. Definitely worse the older they get.
  • @SouthernMama15 Scary Mommy's Instagram is hilarious!
  • @DeansGirl14 watching your child and/or holding them down for shots is one of the roughest things for me. Our doctor's office does a full blood draw instead of finger pricks and that was by far the worst thing ever for me. I want to make DH do that appointment with this LO!

@SouthernMama15 DD got her flu shot in her thigh when she was 2.5 so same here on that.

  • @bumpybump I told DH he has to come to any appointments with shots. It sounds crazy but I can't hold him still anymore.

  • @bumpybump the blood draws are AWFUL.  It never gets easier.
  • @bubblesmtu yes, your Dr will probably tell you to get the tdap while pregnant because baby won't be able to get it for the first 6 months of his life
  • @britvahok I have to have someone come when we got shots for the twins.    It would be totally impossible otherwise!

    Ugh things I didn't even consider.  :s
