Re: Healthy Habits check in Week of 4/17/17

  • 1. What healthy habit are you working on? drinking more water, getting to the gym at least 3xs a week. trying to cut down on sugar

    2. How is it going? not too shabby, this Easter candy isn't helping.

    3. What is a small win from last week? i went to cardio kickboxing on Tuesday. it was a small win, because by Thursday I could hardly walk. I did yoga wednesday, but had to skip the gym on Thursday bc my legs hurt. DH was sympathetic...at first

    4. GTKY: What's the strangest diet/healthy habit you've ever done/or witnessed someone do? a former co-worker was always starting some new "diet" she would create on her own. Once she decided she was only going to eat pre-cut fruit for lunch and dinner. So all she was eating was pineapple and melon. She couldn't figure out why she wasn't losing weight.
My favorite is another coworker who said she did a snickers diet, and actually lost weight. Protein from peanuts!

  • @Avrilmai being sore from a workout is the best!

Ok it's a new week. Last week was a bust!

    1. What healthy habit are you working on? Guys, you'll see each week I'm onto something new.
Although drinking more water is still a goal, I'm trying to work on more beach appropriate body. So low carb it is.
I've been considering purchasing a workout and meal plan from someone I follow on Instagram and FB (diary of a fit mommy). The results she shares are amazing. Everything is quick and can be done at home with just a set of weights, I believe. I keep putting it off bc you know, I'm gonna get knocked up. I think I'm gonna just buy it...

    2. How is it going? Well I've been starving all day bc I didn't get to food shop this weekend so I had a yogurt and a salad. I'm miserable but once I food shop and prep so I'm prepared, it won't be as horrible

    3. What is a small win from last week? I have nothing lol

    4. GTKY: What's the strangest diet/healthy habit you've ever done/or witnessed someone do?
Hmmmmm I really don't think I have much. Juice cleanses are weird to me. I like to eat so I just cannot fathom doing that!
  • I'm going to start participating here to be held accountable!

    1.  What healthy habit are you working on?  Drinking more water, eating real foods (no processed) and gym 5-6x a week.  Being out of town this weekend, I had a couple slip ups but today's a new day!

    2. How's it going?  As I said above Sunday and Monday weren't great, but now that I'm home I can get back into my routine

    3. What is a small win from last week?  Even though I was out of town, I went to a local gym on Saturday and worked out for 2 hours and Sunday took a three mile walk

    4.  GTKY:  I wouldn't say it's weird, but any "Diet" that requires you to completely cut an entire food group out is beyond me.  The only "diet" I've done that works is everything in moderation.  Eat healthy 90% of the time, splurge on ocassion and
Make it up at the gym!

@50wife I tried a juice cleanse a few years back - I wouldn't even make it through the first day!
@Avrilmai I love being sore after a workout - makes me feel like I actually did something!

  • @LoveInDC I think that's my main thing. I'm really trying to find what I enjoy and what works for me so I can stick with it.
And an honest question (no tude here but I feel like in writing it may come off that way)...if there talking about pre diabetes and changing your diet now, should you be watching your fruit intake? Not to burst your clean eating bubble bc fruit is delish right now so I don't blame you!
  • @50Wife No offense taken! The closest thing I can call it is pre-pre-pre-diabetes. So I'm a long way off from a life or death diet situation or even being diabetic (we're talking decades if I keep my current diet). People with fatty liver enzymes like me are encouraged to eat low-carb, high-fiber, low-glycemic foods which break down in your body slowly and exit quickly. In that respect, apples, oranges, peaches, grapes, etc. all fall under that category. While I'm going to try and avoid added sugar, natural sugars should be fine. And again, this isn't going to be a super strict diet because I'm a long way off from it being an actual problem. I'm just making a few more healthy swaps now so that I might not have to do the hardcore real thing in the future :)

  • Gotcha! Then enjoy all the fruit @LoveInDC!!

  • @Avrilmai Nice on the cardio kickboxing!  Sounds super fun - and I love having sore muscles.
@50Wife I say buy it. If it will get you motivated at home, it's worth it :)
    Myra @RVAmom315 Keep it up!
OMG @LoveInDC!  You're almost at the end!  Hhhmmm...what could you do next?

    1. What healthy habit are you working on?
Working out 5 times a week and eating while, unprocessed foods on 21 Day fix eating plan.

    2. How is it going?
Ugh. I had to take last week off because of my shoulder, and I just ate ALL THE THINGS.
But, I'm back starting today and I'm ready to KICK ASS!

    3. What is a small win from last week?
I really don't have any, I'm not kidding.

    4. GTKY: What's the strangest diet/healthy habit you've ever done/or witnessed someone do?
My boss does this dumb diet where you eat like 500 calories a day, but before you start it, you have to binge eat for like 3 days. I suspect that's really the only reason she does it.
She'll lose a bunch of weight, but because it's a crash diet and not realistic, she'll gain it back and then some when she's finished.
Theres also some like liquid drops involved that cost $500 a bottle or some shit. It's lame.
  • @breezybee got any good Fix recipes? Im debating jumping back into that as well. My husband actually wants to get on board with eating better so I feel like with the 21 day fix he can still eat carbs in moderation so he would still be happy.
i have a bunch saved on Pinterest but I'm always down for a good random recipe or even one of your own personal go-to's
  • @breezybee that binge-then-crash diet sounds like so many bad diet fads. I don't trust diets that go to extremes.

    1. What healthy habit are you working on? I have been trying to eat less sugar and exercise consistently.

    2. How is it going? Exercise is going great, even found the energy to "cross-train" on my day off of spinning yesterday with some basic plyometrics and yoga. The eating less sugar ... it was a bad weekend for me. On Saturday I put the filling into some macarons I had made the week before and ate several of the macarons in the process, then we had a dinner party Saturday night for Seder where I drank three glasses of wine and then went to an Easter brunch party and I ate a bonanza of white flour-made delights like pasta, rolls, a lemon square, and some kind of pastry asparagus thing. Then yesterday I had the sugar joneses all day and ate a big handful of jelly beans one of the secretary's had at their desks. I had really built up such good candy avoidance willpower and now I have to crack down again :(

    3. What is a small win from last week? I woke up so crazy energized on Saturday I was able to do 80 minutes of spinning, arm exercises, and 20 minutes of yoga. I felt like Wonder Woman. Then I undid it with my three glasses of wine...

    4. GTKY: What's the strangest diet/healthy habit you've ever done/or witnessed someone do? I think Master Cleanse (or really any cleanse) is wacky. I have a FB friend I know from grad school who has been posting pictures from this big retreat she's on where she's doing Master Cleanse which as I understand it means drinking tons of lemonade, a daily salt water "flush", and eating no food.
  • Hi ladies! So glad so see such an active thread so far this week!

    1. What healthy habit are you working on?
Consistent exercise and healthier food choices

    2. How is it going?
F'ing Easter KILLED me. Candy everywhere and I ate it all. There was also some drama with my SIL
so DH and I came home from the Easter get-together at my parent's house a little early, put the kids to bed and ordered Chinese food. Like, the gross kind. I felt like absolute death afterwards :(

    3. What is a small win from last week?
I did lots of working out. It felt awesome.

    4. GTKY: What's the strangest diet/healthy habit you've ever done/or witnessed someone do?
In high school my friends and I convinced ourselves a watermelon diet would work (you just pee it out!!) I lasted about a week of eating an insane amount of watermelon and then gave up. So stupid.
  • @kmalls I can't believe you lasted a week!  I wouldn't last a day!  I ate Arby's last night and I felt so shamed after lol

  • @RVAmom315 anything to look good in a prom dress  ;)
  • 1. What healthy habit are you working on? Getting back into jogging a few days a week.
Its been 2 weeks since I last jogged I`ve just been doing a lot of walking.

    2. How is it going? It was a struggle this morning jogging up hills definitely felt like giving up a few times but pushed through it.

    3. What is a small win from last week? no weight gain :)

    4. GTKY: What's the strangest diet/healthy habit you've ever done/or witnessed someone do? I tried slim fast shakes but it didn`t really do anything for me.
  • @50Wife I usually will just have some grilled or roast chicken around, along with cucumbers and salad stuff. I also love those hidden valley Greek yogurt dressings!
As far a recipes - I just make it up as I go. I don't use butter or too much olive oil.
I have a great breakfast that I love though - I'm the queen of breakfast. It's 2 poached eggs on top of sautéed asparagus with some sautéed ham or turkey bacon sprinkled either salt, pepper, garlic powder and smoker Tabasco sauce. It's 1 green, 1.5 red. I love getting rid of my greens so I can save my yellows and blue for later :)
I'll also do a lot of taco salads or tacos with butter lettuce cups instead of tortillas. I never use sour cream, I always use nonfat Greek yogurt with some tapitio hot sauce mixed in.
  • @breezybee The amazing yellows and blue container...there just aren't enough for my liking! Guess that's the whole point though.
That breakfast sounds delish!! I'll have to give something like that a shot!
  • 1. What healthy habit are you working on? Going to the gym more regularly (ideally 3-4 times per week) and eating better (especially eating breakfast and bringing lunches)

    2. How is it going? Hit and miss, unfortunately - we've been doing a lot of work on our boat, which means I keep getting weird injuries - last week it was my back, this week my knee is out of sorts, so it's been affecting the gym. However, I've been doing yoga at home more, and got in some aerial yoga in the park Sunday, so at least I'm not completely inactive. I've also been doing better at having breakfast (oatmeal) before I leave for work.

    3. What is a small win from last week? DH is getting more on board, and is cooking lots more veggies - our dinners are mostly just protein and vegetables, with sweet potato some nights, and then I take the same thing for lunch the next day.

    4. GTKY: What's the strangest diet/healthy habit you've ever done/or witnessed someone do? I know this is an unpopular opinion, but I think the Whole 30 fad is pretty strange. I definitely don't agree with restrictive eating plans, especially this one. The founder/inventor is pretty open that some of the rules are just 'because you have to draw a line somewhere' instead of nutritionally driven. Plus, I don't know anyone who has done it and then continued on eating that way - it's not long enough to break the bad eating habit or to establish a new 'better' eating habit (the average is at least two months).
  • @Sailing_Mama Agree with you on Whole 30. I have a friend who has done it three times and thinks it is great even though she admits she gains most of the weight back. I have read through the rules and while some of it is science-y (reducing sugars and processed foods) there are some restrictions that seem made up just to differentiate Whole 30 from other low/lower carb diets - like, no olive oil but clarified butter is fine.

@Avrilmai Cardio kickboxing sounds like a lot of fun!
@LoveInDC GL with your new diet! Have you tried the Erin Motz 30 day yoga challenge? I did it a year or so ago, and loved her!
@breezybee Yay for starting back! Hope your shoulder is feeling better.
@kmalls I LOVE watermelon, but I definitely couldn't live off of it.
    1. What healthy habit are you working on? Working out more & drinking water.

    2. How is it going? Working out is going well, but for some reason by back is killing me today. I think I did something that made it angry. I'm hoping some yoga tonight helps. Drinking water still isn't going so well. How can I be this bad at drinking water?? Has anyone found anything that helps them drink more? My strategy so for has been pretty nonexistent- basically just to will myself to drink more.

    3. What is a small win from last week? Actually got DH to run with me a couple times last week. He's in class a lot so he never wants to go with me.

    4. GTKY: What's the strangest diet/healthy habit you've ever done/or witnessed someone do? I have a friend who put herself on a pickles, popcorn, and protein shake diet.

  • @Avrilmai Great job getting to the gym! Your coworkers diets sound hilarious! How do you not roll your eyes?
@50Wife Good luck with the new program!
@RVAmom315 Great job getting a workout in while away!
@LoveInDC Isn't it amazing how quickly tastes can change when you make a diet change - one way or the other? When I start to clean up my diet, within a few days all I want is fresh fruits/veggie.
@Breezybee Hope your shoulder is better!
@zamora_spin Candy dishes are the worst! It's so hard to walk by.
@kmalls Chinese food always seems like a good idea...until you finish  :s
@Sailing_Mama How did you like aerial yoga?
@Cricket648 A lot of ladies on here use the app Waterlogged, where you can track your water intake. I think you can set an alarm to remind you to drink. I use the app, but not the alarms though. I think @Avrilmai does though. Maybe she could explain more about the alarms?

    1. What healthy habit are you working on? After vacation, getting back on the healthy eating train is needed. We were actually relatively active while away, between bike riding and tons of walking, so that helped. But getting back on track with a healthy diet is hard when you've been eating whatever you want for a week.

    2. How is it going? My sister sent us a free week of Blue Apron that will be delivered today so at least we will have balanced meals to help.

    3. What is a small win from last week? We only have dessert twice while on vaca!

    4. GTKY: What's the strangest diet/healthy habit you've ever done/or witnessed someone do? @Breezybee I did that diet too. You take HCG drops three times a day under your tongue and you eat next to nothing. I think I ate 2 wasa crackers a day, 4 oz of chicken and an apple. It was awful. I lost 10 pounds but I was miserable and so mean! And of course as soon as I stopped I put everything back on. It was also super expensive. And TMI warning, I didn't do #2 for two weeks! That cannot be healthy at all, but when I asked the girl I bought the program from she said that was normal. That was when I quit and went back to food.

  • @SoldiersMom I love aerial yoga! I'm not as huge of a fan of the classes (although obviously they are important at the beginning), just because they tend to move slowly and I like to experiment haha. We just hang it from a tree or the mast of our boat, and do our own thing these days
  • 1. What healthy habit are you working on? I'm a major Diet Coke addict. It's actually pretty gross - for a long time I drank NOTHING but Diet Coke. I've cut back my consumption to about 2-3 per day but am trying to work my way back to even less. I'm also going on a vacation in June that will involve lots of hiking, so I'm trying to get in shape for that despite having a knee that was irreparably damaged in a car accident in 2015 (grrr).

    2. How is it going? Pretty good, actually. I'm down to 2 a day - 1 in the morning, 1 with dinner. As far as the exercise goes, I haven't been doing as well as I've wanted because my heels have inexplicably started hurting.

    3. What is a small win from last week? I bought Diet Sprite and am mixing it with fruit juices as my drinks for the evening. I know Diet Sprite isn't the most healthy thing out there, but it's the caffeine I'm trying to reduce in my diet.

    4. GTKY: What's the strangest diet/healthy habit you've ever done/or witnessed someone do? The Ideal Protein Diet is very strange to me. I mean I understand why people do it - you can lose crazy amounts of weight on it. But having to mix up things like "pottage" in a blender cup is just strange to me. My mom did Ideal Protein and she was SO MEAN that I told her she had to stop the diet. I mean it didn't even allow fruit, which I think is a bit crazy for a diet since fruit has so many good nutrients in addition to the sugar.

@Avrilmai - I could totally get on board with a Snickers diet.

@LoveInDC - I really enjoyed taking yoga classes so I had an actual instructor who could work with me on poses, correct my poses, and show me modifications for poses that I couldn't do. I also loved that when I couldn't do a pose she was like "yoga is about what's good for YOUR body and not all poses are made for all bodies." So she was great about building my self esteem as well as my strength. And having an actual person helped keep me more accountable with going to classes. (The yoga studio closed and now I'm doing weights with a personal trainer who's a friend of mine instead of doing yoga, but I really miss the yoga!!) If your city has yoga classes, I'd suggest doing a one-time walk-in at a few and see if you can find an instructor you like. Granted, classes aren't as budget friendly as the online programs and are less convenient.

@SoldiersMom - I'll be interested to hear how you like Blue Apron. I've considered trying that because I just don't have the time to plan out a bunch of meals.

@cricket648 - As you can see from my post about the Diet Coke, I'm TERRIBLE at drinking water. I feel your pain on that. Even when I've got water in front of me, I'm not sure why it's so hard for me to remember to drink it.

  • @sunniegrly I am addicted to Diet Coke as well - I was drinking 2-3 bottles (16 oz) a day!  I've gone "mostly" cold turkey since 3/27, I had 3 over the weekend when I was out of town. But back to just water now. I had major headaches for 2 days withdrawaling from the sugar and caffeine but now I'm good - it actually tasted gross to me when I had it and didn't even finish them

  • If anyone cares about my opinion, I loved blue apron. We've been saying we wanted to sign up for it again. We never had a meal we didn't like.

If anyone is considering signing up...ask around to see if friends or family already use it. You can have them send you a link for a free box! You accrue free boxes to have friends sample the longer you use it

soooooo if anyone has a box they want to send my way...
  • @LoveInDC - $17 is like the cost of one drop-in class, so I'd say it's a good deal. Sigh....I've tried the carbonated water but HATED it. Maybe it's because I had a bad experience with surprise carbonated water (accidentally drank some) when studying in the UK. If there are bubbles in the liquid, the liquid has to have a LOT of flavor in it for me to like it. I'd say I half-crave the flavor and half-crave the caffeine. The caffeine thing started as self-medicating for ADD/ADHD. It's especially hard to stay away from it now that I'm off my ADD/ADHD meds for TTC (I was on methylphenidate ER for 8 years...notice the "meth" in the name of that medicine...the withdrawal from that was pretty awful. And obviously I'm having major trouble with the ADD since I should DEFINITELY be working right now. Grumble grumble.)

@RVAmom315 - Maybe I should try cold turkey. As mentioned above I went cold turkey (under doctor supervision) off of the methylphenidate. Not sure why I haven't had the courage to go cold turkey with the Diet Coke. Prob because I like the taste so much. BUT health and the health of my hoped-for future children are more important than tasting something good. You've inspired me. So, cold turkey it is. Starting......NOW! 1-2-3 GO!

  • New to this thread but hoping maybe it will help keep me accountable! I've been unsuccessfully trying to lose weight for the last year+ and actually ended up gaining about 25lbs since September  :o I know my diet needs to change (we eat out all the time) especially since diet can impact fertility.

    1. What healthy habit are you working on?
Eating healthier and working out regularly. This doesn't mean eating only "healthy" foods but more counting calories and cutting way back on eating out. I've been pretty consistent with working out minus the last few months of 2016 but I do want to start getting back into running. I was super burnt out after my half in September and it's been really difficult to get back into a routine. I want to run 2-3 times per week, go to spin 2-3 times per week, and strength train 2-3 times per week.

    2. How is it going?
Meh. I really just started getting serious again at the end of last week and then took Friday-Monday off for vacation eating. Yesterday and today I've stayed completely on track with my food. Working out is going decently well. I went to spin twice last week and I'm going again tonight but probably won't be going again this week unless I decide to go Saturday morning instead of running. I went for a run yesterday and I have another one scheduled for tomorrow. Debating whether I want to attempt a long run on Saturday.

    3. What is a small win from last week?
I didn't eat any fast food Wednesday or Thursday! That sounds so lame but we seriously have been eating out at least one meal every day for the last year.

    4. GTKY: What's the strangest diet/healthy habit you've ever done/or witnessed someone do?
I don't really have anything! I don't know a lot of "diet people" and I don't even attempt structured diets. I did once have my mom try to convince me she was being totally healthy on 600 calories a day though so I guess that counts.
  • @gusgus14 Hey I hear you on the fast food - it's so easy just to grab and go, so trying not to do that as much and eat at home is tough, so good for you in working on that!

  • @gusgus14 - I know what you mean about the fast food. I've been planning this huge 2-week road trip around Ireland for the summer (with ZERO help from the DH) and we've been eating pizza and gyros for a month now because I just haven't had the time or energy to plan and cook meals in addition to planning the trip. It's just hard. Takeout is so easy. Good for you for working on it, and hooray for small wins!

  • @SoldiersMom You should definitely check it out - get a couple of friends together and go, you guys will have a blast!
  • @sunniegrly DH and I are also planning a trip to Ireland this summer! Do you know where you'd like to go or what you'd like to see yet? I think we're staying in Dublin, Cork, Killarney, and Shannon.

@SoldiersMom OMG THATS IT!  Oy, she's so mean when she does it, and she also complains of non stop diarrhea. Yes, she tells me these things for some reason.  No thank you!
and yes - my shoulder is better!  I'm so glad too, because that shit was not fun at all. I could barely sleep it hurt so bad!

Eta: @50Wife We always care about your opinion!  Also, I think I have like 5 free boxes. Let me double check and if I do, you can totally have 1!

also eta: @gusgus14 Welcome to the board!
nice working out and cutting back on the takeout! I know how it is - especially when you're tired and don't want to cook after a long day. Takeout delivery had directly made me gain like 10 lbs lol. We must end the madness!

@cricket648 - That's awesome!!! I studied in Ireland years ago, so I've seen most of the Republic. DH has also spent some time there as well. I wanted to go back to Ireland but decided to do something a bit different so that I will have seen most of the island - we're going to Donegal (Republic of Ireland) and Northern Ireland (UK). It was hard deciding to go north, because a part of me wanted to re-live my first Ireland experience. But the Giant's Causeway is a bucket list item for me, and we couldn't have fit it in our trip if we'd done the southern route. We're doing a lot of walking and nature stuff - Cavan Burren, Slieve League, staying in a 100 yr old thatched roof cottage, Tory Island, hillwalking, Malin Head, Giant's Causeway, the Mourne Mountains. If this is your first trip to Ireland, I am so jealous. I've done a decent amount of traveling, and Ireland is my favorite place in the world.

  • @sunniegrly It sounds like you're an Ireland pro! This will be our first trip to Ireland, and we're really excited about it. Your trip sounds like it'll be a blast! Staying in that thatched roof cottage sounds like it'll be an amazing experience! We're also excited to do some nature stuff. I'm glad to hear that you liked it so much, now I'm even more excited for our trip!

  • @sunniegrly @RVAmom315 - Yes, it's just so darn convenient! I'm trying to be really healthy for breakfast and lunch today because we're going to a baseball game tonight and having dinner there.
@breezybee - Thanks for the welcome! It definitely has to end! We used to eat out at most once a week so I want to try to get back to that. I held steady for a long time even with a trash diet because I was training for a half marathon so I was exercising 6x a week with one of those being a 10+ mile run every Saturday for several months and then when I stopped working out regularly the weight piled on super quickly.

Small victory from spin class last night: I've been going to spin semi-regularly for almost 3 months and last night was the first time I didn't have to modify anything or sit when the instructor had us up and I made it through the arm segment without stopping for the first time ever!
