Two Vessel Cord?

Hey Gals!
So I had my anatomy scan on Friday (it's a BOY!) and everything looks great.  Baby is perfectly sized and thrashing around like a mad man (greeeaaaaat - a sign of things to come??)  Haha!
So the perinatologist came in to talk to me - turns out I have a two vessel cord (most people have three vessels).  Happens to 1/100 women and in 75% of the cases, nothing happens and the baby is fine. In fact, he told me that if i wasn't over 35 and having a billion doc appts, they may not have ever even noticed (since the baby isn't measuring small, which is usually what alerts them to it).  He told me there is nothing to do but continue to be monitored and that he is "not concerned at all" about this.
I met with my doc as well and she echoed his sentiments - nothing to do, nothing to worry about, just monitor it.

My question is - anybody here in the same situation?  Just wanted to see how common it was (hey, if 1/100 women have it i figured there had to be at least one other lady with the same condition around here!)

Re: Two Vessel Cord?

  • My cousin had a two vessel cord! Baby was born a little bit small but otherwise perfectly healthy!

  • I know we have at least one mom (@ChefRamsay) on this board with a two-vessel cord. I feel like I've read of one more, but I can't remember. If you search earlier boards, I've seen quite a few successful stories.
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • I have never experienced this but a coworker of mine did with her first baby and she still had a 10lb baby girl!! She is pregnant again and was very nervous about the size since he has a 3 vessal cord. I would say if the docs aren't Iover concerned then try not to stress mama!
  • DD had one. I was monitored for growth- which can apparently slow in the third tri. She came out 9lb, 5oz and 20 inches. So it's probably a good thing her growth was stunted!! My understanding is that it is often very benign- hope the same is for you!
  • Definitely have seen this on other boards.  I agree that if you search under all you will find plenty.

In any case, I have never had it myself but I don't recall anybody having had an issue at birth from it. Hopefully it's not too concerning for you and they will continue to monitor you closely.
  • @ke0009 My LO also has a 2VC. Starting at 28 weeks I'll have to go in for an u/s every 4 weeks to monitor growth. Other than that they are treating this pregnancy just the same as any other. It was mentioned to me they will induce at 39 weeks, but I think that has more to so with my high blood pressure.

    same thing
  • @Sugargirl1019 Yeah, a SUA and 2VC are the same thing. Everyone I've know that had one also had healthy babies. My Dr even said, before they had such advanced ultrasound technology, they would only know you had a 2VC after the baby was born and they could see the cord.

@ke0009 Unless your Dr tells you something different, try not to worry too much. And remember to stay away from Dr Google
