Diclegis

If this has already been a thread, please forgive me. I tried to search but I could not find anything on our board!

Who is taking it? What info did your doctor give you about it? Side effects?

I was shocked that they do not give zofran anymore, mainly because I took so much with my last pregnancy! But, I am glad there is an alternative because things are really picking up in the nausea department for me! They gave me samples and a script. He went over how to take it (two at night and one morning and afternoon if needed). He mentioned it might make you sleepy.

For those of you taking it, how many are you really having to use to get relief. Is the relief constant or do you still have breakthrough nausea? Does it make you drowsy? I am very worried about this part because most things do make me sleepy (even tylenol!) I will start the dose tonight and see how it goes!

I take the otc ingredients (b6 and unisom). I find that a full dose (equivalent to two pills of diclegis) of that at bedtime generally gets me through the day. For a week or so I was taking a diclegis at lunch but I decided the drowsiness outweighed any extra benefits over just the nighttime dose.

I just got some and I'm so excited to use it. Don't care if I'm drowsy if I can stop gagging just by seeing a picture of food!!!

@cottingham3 I'm taking it. It doesn't fully help, but it reduces my vomiting from 4-5 times/day to 1-2 times per day. It makes me EXTREMELY drowsy so I've only been taking it at night, but my doctor just told me today to take more because I'm still nauseous and vomiting.

I'm pretty sure you can still get Zofran if that's what you want instead. @pawcall am I remembering correctly that you're on Zofran?

My doctor prescribed some for me but I haven't taken it yet. I've heard it makes you really sleepy. I feel almost hesitant to take it because my MIL made me feel guilty for even considering taking a medication while I'm pregnant even when my doctor prescribed it for me. Thankfully I haven't had terrible morning sickness yet but I'm nervous in case it strikes full force.
  • Options
@Christy.H I'm sorry your MIL made you feel guilty. I just wouldn't tell her.

My insurance doesn't cover Diclegis, but it does cover Zofran so I'm going with that. I have heard other people say that it really helped them feel better though :)

    Thanks ladies!
@Christy.H that makes me sad! I know it is hard but try not to let others make you feel bad unless its your DR telling you not to do something.

My dr was adamant this is now the only A-rated drug for nausea during pg. I did not ask him about zofran becuase it did not occur to me and I did not fully grasp what was in the diclegis until I had gone. I took one mid afternoon and the nausea was GONE within 15 min. But, I was a dead head the rest of the day. Its now 740 and about 1 hr after our supper time. Its back and I am about to take the 2 but not until I read to my 4 year old because I know I won't make it through the book if I take it first!

We shall see how tomorrow goes!

I have been taking the Canadian equivalent (Diclectin) for a week. I take 2 at bed time and usually one around lunch time or I can't get through the afternoon evening.

I still get breakthrough nausea about once a day but it is way better. About once a day I'm hungry and the food tastes good! Trying to keep something in stomach keeps things at bay as well.

I also take the otc ingredients unisom and B6. My doctor said its the same thing but cheaper so may be an option for those of you struggling with insurance not covering it. I'm nervous taking it too just bc I didn't take anything my last pregnancy. Honestly the sleepy affect I love bc I was staring to have insomnia. I love that it helps with nausea and sleep. I do have break through nausea but when I don't take it it's way worse. I haven't vomited since I started it.

Curious if anyone has taken both unisom/B6 and diclectin and can compare the drowsiness??

i took unisom/b6 during my first 3 pregnancies, and I just wanted to encourage you ladies that the drowsiness side effect did decrease for me after a while - a couple weeks, maybe?

I have been fortunate not to have MS yet this pregnancy, otherwise I'd be on one or the other!

My RE chose to do zofran rather than diclegis. It works well for my Pregnancy-related nausea and my migraine nausea. I think it also seems to take the edge off a migraine headache which helps when I have no other options.

I was on zofran well into 3rd tri last time around, hoping this eases up sooner this time.

Curious if anyone has taken both unisom/B6 and diclectin and can compare the drowsiness??

I've done both, but only once.
Once I took diclegis at night.. I missed the tiny burst of drowsiness and had god awful insomnia that night. The next day I switched to unisom and slept *wonderfully* it was such a relief. I am careful not to take it until I'm ready for bed, because although it makes me even more drowsy, I'm still afraid if I manage to miss it I'll end up with insomnia again.

Once I took half a unisom and b6 (like the one pill equivalent of diclegis) and I struggled. Taking a diclegis at lunch gives me this brief, semi-intense drowsy period and then leaves me just a little foggy the rest of the day.

Until I discovered I was able to control it well enough with just the night time dose, my plan had been unisom/b6 at bed and one diclegis at lunch.

Eta my midwife wrote me a prescription for zofran for active vomiting, not nausea. She didn't comment on the safety, but specifically clarified when to use it.

Lurking from October - I've been on it for 3 weeks. First time I took it, it was magic. I went from couldn't eat or drink anything and lost 8lbs in a week to functional human being. I held on the 2 at night 1 in the morning for a week or so but started having breakthrough nausea in the afternoon so added the afternoon 1 as well. Helped a bit. In the last week, the nausea has been breaking though in the afternoon/evening but I'm still functional most of the day. I don't know if it's cuz I'm acclimating to the meds or it's because my MS is escalating (this past week was week 9 which is when OB said it would peak).  Sure as hell not stopping the meds to figure it out though.  So definitely not a cure all but went from absultely miserable not functional was probably a day or two away from Iv fluids to reasonably functional with what I'd consider tolerable intermitent nausea.

As far as the drowsiness, I was constantly drowsy before I started it. I don't think it's changed a ton but probably increased a little. I occasionally have middle of the night work emergencies and have not found it more difficult to get up and attend to those while on the diclegis.

Good luck!  I'm hoping this will start going away soon - 10 weeks tomorrow. :)

I am not sure I am going to be able to take this. I took the two pills about 730 last night as Dh agreed to put everyone to bed at 8. I was dead to the world by and faintly remember everyone coming in to kiss me goodnight! I woke several times in the night in a sort of panic not knowing where everyone ones or if I had over slept. It is now 10am and I STILL feel like a sloth. I am not sure I should've driven myself and our youngest to work/school today! eek! But, on the other hand. I am NOT in the slightest bit sick to my stomach!

@cottingham3 - maybe try taking one at night and see if that helps and still keeps the nausea away.

I actually feel less tired since starting them - I sleep like a log - which is awesome and I found it completely exhausting to try not to throw up at work all day - I actually feel more like myself - except a nap in the afternoon would be amazing!

OMG the mean girls!!! Wow. Flashback. I'm still in touch with a few of the ladies from S12 in various capacities. Some only twitter or Instagram, but I do have a whopping two of them as friends on Facebook.

I'm still active with my June 2012 BMB via Facebook. We've had our falling outs but there's about 120 of us who talk daily still. There were more but we also had a "Mean girls" drama blow up (I am pretty sure it's a BMB inevitable lol) and they have their own group and have for a couple years now. Hard to believe we've been around this place for over 5 years now!

I saw my doctor today and asked for Diclectin (Canadian version). Just waiting for the pharmacy to fill my script. I'm dying. The all day vomiting and nausea is horrendous. I am totally useless right now. I'm starving but if I eat, I throw up or just feel disgusting after. Really hoping for some relief. With my 2nd I had HG and my Doctor said it's likely coming on again but I'm really praying that isn't the case because I spent weeks in the hospital with that pregnancy because of dehydration and severe vomiting.

I've been doing the OTC version. Usually half a unisom and one B6 before bed. The whole unisom reserved for very bad days. Usually a little groggy in the morning but not too terrible. I've had to shift my bedtime earlier to compensate, which I honestly needed to do, anyway! I'm able to eat and usually not vomiting most days now. I still have break through nausea but usually just in the background.

I recently got some sea-bands and while they're not magic, they do really seem to help bring things down a notch. The big plus is that there are no side effects since its not a medication. Maybe something to try to help with those afternoon yuckies when you don't want a foggy head.

@cottingham3 that's so good that it helped you with your nausea. Hopefully you can find a happy medium and rest up to help with the exhaustion!

@2Dash that makes me hopeful that you haven't been tired. I haven't needed to take mine yet but I'm afraid I'll be so tired when I do take it.

@Karrotelle I hope your feeling better soon!

@Kdremington I've heard about the sea bands but wasn't sure how much they would actually help. I'm glad that they've been helping you!

My dr. just prescribed me this and zofran. She said to start with the Diclegis and see how I do, but she gave me the zofran just in case. I've been having pretty much 24 hour nausea, gagging in the mornings, and basically by 5:00 I can't do anything because I'm so nauseous. My body has never been one to vomit, even when I have stomach viruses, so it doesn't surprise me that I haven't yet, but the nausea is bad enough that I'm not eating normal foods because they make me gag. Hopefully this med will give me some relief!

I saw my RE today who offered diclegis along with the zofran I'm already using. I passed for now, I think I can handle the nausea, it's the uncontrollable vomiting that had to stop.

I wanted to provide an update of all of you out there trying this drug. I "think" I may have finally found a happy medium! I am taking one at night and it gets me through about 2pm. If I cannot manage the nausea I can take another one at this time. By 630pm I am READY to take my nightly dose but I can push through to about 730 which is when I am taking my nightly regimen -BPbeds, folic acid and one Diclegis. So far I am feeling great in the mornings with this dosage...not drowsy and not nauseous! Good luck to everyone!

@rachelb51212 I am the same way- it takes a lot for me to actually vomit but I am seriously struggling..

For those taking the unisom/b6 combo- what is the b6 dosage you recommend? I am off to Target to get that and sea bands.

So I started taking Diclectin on Wednesday night and holy sh!t what a difference! Within a couple hours of the first pill the nausea was almost gone. Yesterday was my first full day that I didn't vomit. I had some breakthrough intense nausea in the afternoon but I let myself get hungry. If I stay on top of snacking, I don't feel any nausea. I just downed an egg mcmuffin and hash brown and wish I had ordered 2 lol first real food in weeks! Happy tears ladies, happy tears! I take one pill in the morning and one around 8pm. Seems to be helping so much right now!
