As someone who will be an NP in just a little over a month I'm sorry so many have had bad experiences! I will say, there is no perfect profession... I've worked with amazing nurses and some terrible nurses, some amazing physicians and some terrible physicians. The NPs I've worked with some have been great and some not so great... not everyone is the perfect fit for their profession. As for having a napoleon complex I will neve pretend to have the education of a physician nor should I, so it's unfortunates so many of you think that. That all being said NO medical professional should ever dismiss your concerns of symptoms! I hope you all have good experiences from here on out
I'm so sorry too! I am in NP school, but I have another year left. I've been a nurse for 14 years though and have met nice and mean from both professions. Some people are just jerks, and I am sorry that some of you have been unlucky to encounter them. I'm short like Napoleon, so I'll try to not resemble him in any other way once I graduate lol.
@DuchessOfCambridge I was just reading Expecting Better last night and I think she said that salmonella isn't dangerous to the fetus in the same way as listeria. Of course it sucks to have any kind of food poisoning no matter if you are pregnant or not, but according to the book it doesn't pose a threat to the pregnancy. Try not to worry!
@ktcakes87 I second everyone that recommended the ER for an ultrasound if your insurance will cover it! Or one of those walk-in emergicare places might be able to do it too! I think it would be worth it for peace of mind considering your history. Hope everything is ok!
@liz4382 thank you! I'm really glad it won't harm the baby but I'm mad and disgusted in general because that's dangerous to serve people and no one wants raw chicken fingers.
@jess0211@chawk17 I wrote the manager a really angry email and then told my boss I may have food poisoning tomorrow. I'm mostly upset because I wasn't paying attention (bumping and eating) so I don't know how much I actually ate. It was definitely quite a bit more than one bite If I hadn't had so much work to do today I would have gone back down and made a stink. Maybe tomorrow. If I get sick I'm DEFINITELY making a bigger stink.
@kaitieb14 ugh I'm pretty nauseous right now but I don't know if that's because of baby, food poisoning, or all in my head. I'm going with all in my head since technically it's too early for food poisoning to start. I don't want to eat meat for a long time now
@JAGClark I would be so mad. My mom is not the best at keeping secrets and I told her if she told a soul that she would not even know when I went into labor or anything. And she knows I'd stick to it.
@ariasbabyblog My DH is military so he really can't take sick time unless he's dying. He caught my cold and it took him twice as long to get better because he was doing 14-16 hour days for a whole month.
I'm shocked by the stories that have been shared throughout this BMB about family members who haven't been able to keep the secret. Makes me so mad!
So we wanted to wait till 12 weeks to tell my mom, but I was so sick last week that I needed to tell her. It was a situation where I just needed my mom. And now that she knows, she's super helpful with picking up food and stuff. However, she still manages to make this about her. I allowed her to tell one friend (a former obgyn who I want to speak with, too) and she keeps pressuring for permission to tell her other best friend. "When I'm anxious I deal by talking about it." I told her she had two pregnancies in which she chose who to tell and when. This is mine. It's just really annoying.
The other day when I was really sick I mentioned to my sister my fear that nothing would show on today's u/s. My sister said in this flippant tone, "well, I'm sure you'd get back at it soon." I bawled my eyes out haven't spoken with her since.
What the actual F sister??? Does your sister have any kids? I think sometimes people who haven't tried to have a baby yet have no idea how heart breaking even early losses are.
@DuchessOfCambridge Ugh. Raw chicken is gross. I haven't had any food aversions yet, but the thought of biting into a raw chicken tender definitely kicks up an icky feeling..
@JAGClark Oh man I would be so pissed. That's one main reason why I haven't told my brother.. every time I see him he asks me if I'm pregnant. I always say no, and that I would tell him if i was - but the truth is, I'd wait for til 2nd tri for sure. I don't think he'd tell our parents, but he'd definitely blab to the rest of the fam and his friends...
H's snoring is driving me crazy. Add that to the fact that I don't sleep well as it is lately and I end up tired and grouchy all day. Oh andplusalso I have this weird pain in my jaw..like it's tight or something? I hope I haven't been clenching my jaw in my little amount of sleep...
Thanks guys. To be fair, my sister is very sorry and has sent many sweet texts. I'm just not ready to talk to her yet...doesn't feel safe. She has never been pregnant nor tried and I'm sure she doesn't know what it's like.
@bklynchica that is SO NOT OKAY for your sister to have said that. I'm sorry she made you feel so upset.
@DuchessOfCambridge I am having sumpathy nausea for your chicken situation. That sucks, and I really hope you dont get sick. Try not to think about it too much (easier said than done) because I'm sure if it were me my brain would be getting the best of me!
My kid is still awake reading Where's Waldo IN THE PITCH DARK OF HIS BEDROOM. KID. You're literally never going to find him until it is morning so. Go. The. F. To. Sleep.
@DuchessOfCambridge NOT an unpopular opinion. For me it's just that I really appreciate how organized this board is, and it seems like almost anything will fit into one of the pre-existing topics/threads. Maybe I'm just lazy and don't want to have to click on more threads...

My DH is a spacehead. Came home from work..hungry as always. He asks what he can make me before I left work I told him I wanted grilled cheese. Come home, now he doesn't want to make me anything but says he will while I shower. Come out of the shower, no grilled cheese. He spaced again and started watching a new show. Fine. I'll make it. Too bad the only bread that's out is the heels, he didn't take the new one out of the freezer, there's no butter. And I'm the mean one cause I said I'll make it myself since now I have nothing else to do.
@ugoglencoco thanks, I'm trying to not work myself up over it. I did call my doctor's office and the nurse I spoke to was super sweet and didn't make me feel dumb for calling about it, she was very sympathetic. She just said to monitor and call back if I need to. At least the chicken was cooked on the outside. I hope your sympathy nausea goes away @lahansen agreed, we already have a thread for everything...I also like the organization. I don't mind new topics that can be ongoing like the pregnant girl confessions or pregnancy rage and things like that but a lot of other stuff can fit into randoms/symptoms/STM questions threads.
I've been drinking cranberry juice because I read something online that sour things help with pH balance if I do get food poisoning? Idk if that's true but why not. BUT I'm drinking it in bed while watching some TV (DH is out tonight) and I missed my nightstand and it spilled everywhere. Worst ever. Bed stripped, bed frame scrubbed (it's fabric). On the bright side, I'm not puking yet. I'm back in bed with another glass of juice. I don't learn.
@hezzer78 jaw clenching was a serious symptom of mine with DS. I don't think there was grinding because DH absolutely hates that, and I'm sure he would've noticed at some point. But whatever I was doing, I wore down some of my back teeth. Now I have a night guard and my chiropractor consistently has to check my jaw and stop it from popping. All this to say, if you think there's a chance you're starting something, I would definitely encourage you to talk to your dentist! If you have to go the night guard route, it will probably be better to start in the second tri. It was a pain at first, but I can barely sleep without mine now.
@DuchessOfCambridge Iwould assume it's probably under the same umbrella as grape juice stopping the stomach bug bacteria from multiplying? I read an article that once the juice reaches the digestive track the Ph is so variable from person to person that they aren't positive it actually works. But as far as the grape juice goes, there IS something in their skin that could bind with viral proteins to make them less likely to infect your system. Science.
@ugoglencoco I'm confused. Are you saying that if I have a stomach bug and drink grape juice, I wouldn't spread the germ. Or are you thinking the grape juice kills the stomach bug? Just asking claryifying question- Ive. never tried grape juice while sick.
Apparently if you know you've been exposed to it, but haven't actually gotten sick yet, and you drink it right away it is supposed to stop the bacteria from spreading any further. So if your kid came home with it, you're supposed to drink like 3 glasses right away and it can help prevent you from getting sick.

That's... a lot of grape juice. It would probably make my stomach hurt and then I would just spiral into a complete panic lol
(but just in case I decide to try it, is it white or purple grape juice??)
Its the purple grape juice @ArtificialRed! And I haven't actually tried it, I read it like a week after norovirus took our entire house out this past January.
@JAGClark Oh man. I would feel rage about that too. I just saw my MIL outed my husband's cousin on FB "congrats on your pregnancy! I just heard from your dad!" and the cousin had posted nothing on her page yet. I felt rage on her behalf. The cousin ended up posting ultrasound pics a few days later. I keep trying to reinforce to the in laws that we aren't sharing the news yet and praying she doesn't say anything. She keeps talking about it in front of my sons, whom we are waiting to tell until after the first trimester.
@bklynchica So sorry that your sister said that. Has she been pregnant before? Sometimes people can be so insensitive without even knowing it. I hope the u/s went well.
I'm ragey for all of you with insensitive relatives!
I had never heard that grape juice trick either! Putting it in the random trivia part of my brain for future reference.
My bitchfest is a little tmi: my stupid body! I have felt so bloated and constipated for the last couple of days, but today I went #2 like 6 times and still feel stopped up. Had to have DH stop and get me some colace on the way home. Still waiting for it to kick in...

Y'all need to calm down with the NP bashing. I work with, am friends with and am a patient of NP's. NP's don't have a Napolian complex. And actually are only two years away from getting doctorates in nursing. So get down off your high horses and chill.

Everyone here is allowed their own opinions. Mine is that the 3 NPs I've dealt with while pregnant haven't been good - and yes, I do think some of the problem is them trying to measure up to the doctors in the practice. (FTR, the practice also has on MD that I think it a TW too.) I do not have a high horse - I simply have my experiences and that is what I shared.
@kissthesky32 As an EMT, I deal with NP's, PA's, and MD's a lot, and while I have met 1-2 NP's that I like over the years, I totally agree that most of them have not been very nice. It has been my experience that they've been condescending, unsympathetic, and rude.
@lovetheseboogers just a little advice, typically telling someone to "chill" is usually a quick way to make them do the exact opposite. Voicing your opinion is cool, but don't insult others just because you don't like their opinions.
Rolling over into Tuesday... I hate morning sickness. I'm hardly a functioning human, and I'm still expected to perform perfectly at work. I hate being tired. I just want to sleep for a damn week.
My husband slept on the couch last night, and while it was an accident, I seriously hate when he does it. When I wake up in the morning and realize he never came to bed, it automatically puts me in a bad mood.
@lovetheseboogers if you'd bothered to actually read anything we posted you'd know we were sharing our experiences, which haven't been great, but also that we are open to seeing NPs in the future, do trust them medically, and do know some who are great. The NP in my PCPs group absolutely does have a napoleon complex and I refuse to see her. I've also "fired" doctors and dentists for being rude to me as well, the rude and condescending behavior has just been more consistent (in MY experience) with NPs. It's great for you that you've had wonderful NPs, not all of us are so lucky.
@lovetheseboogers Also, there were quite a few of us chiming in with super positive experiences with NPs, so I would definitely characterize it as a conversation/sharing of different experiences than as bashing. As @safinn21 and @fiddleRN79 pointed out, mostly it's just that some people are jerks, a problem that shows up in every career, but perhaps is more pronounced in careers in which you are caring for people when they are scared, unhappy, confused, in pain or otherwise need extra empathy and patience.
