Hair dye/manicures...Off limits?

There is soooo much conflicting information out there regarding hair dye and manicures. Some say it's ok as long as the space ventilated very well. Others say it's absolutely OFF LIMITS.

My midwife told me early on that it's all ok (wear gloves, be ventilated, don't do it so much). But today I met with her supervising doctor who just said absolutely not. To stop immediately. And to even stop cleaning with normal cleaning products (like windex and Clorox) regardless of precautions...even when you're not pregnant...

Is she right? Is she a little extreme. I'm not high risk. How do beauty professionals do it while they're pregnant? Are there any hair dressers or nail stylists on here that can elaborate?

Thanks!!!

Meh. I've got my hair dyed through both my kids and this pregnancy. I was never told not to. I do go to a salon so I'm not specifically touching the chemicals but that's my thing. I do dye my hair less as well, maybe twice during pregnancy. As for manicures, while I've never done one, I've been told it's fine. Ventilation is key and if you are using chemicals yourself, I would be gloves as a precaution. Some doctors are very cautious others are not.

  • I can't speak definitively to the hair dye and manicure stuff. I've always heard it's fine if it's well ventilated. But as for the Clorox stuff? That's BS. A 10% bleach solution (typical Clorox ratio) is the only thing that reliably gets rid of food allergens on hard surfaces. I'm not putting my kid's life at risk so that my doctor can feel good about pushing crunchy cleaning products.
  • I never avoided getting my hair dyed or getting manicures with my first pregnancy, but have absolutely read differing opinions on the subject.I think you just have to do what makes you comfortable because anything you google will tell you to avoid it all together while pregnant or its safe.

I haven't gotten my hair dyed yet but it needs it badly so that will be happening sometime this month.  I've had two gel manicures so far this pregnancy.  My doctor said it was fine.  YOLO.

  • I've always thought those were a bit too extreme. My doctor has never said anything about it. I go to professional salons and I don't inhale any cleaning products.

  • @labby18  I've seen your posts about eating lunch meat and I have to be honest, you've inspired me!

I just laughed out loud at this.

  • My doctor has said it is fine to dye your hair. I didn't as about manicures.
  • i have stopped dying my hair and getting my nails done... however, i use Clorox spray to clean (obviously keeping the room well ventilated)... the cleaning products seem a bit much

  • On a serious note my neighbor is a hair stylist. hair dyes should be avoided in the 1st trimester is all she told me.
  • My doctor gave me the ok on hair dye, lunch meat, sushi, and runny egg yolks

I hadn't heard of the manicure thing. And when I clean with harsh products I usually have a window open anyway.

    It's her other persona.
  • I dye my whole head of hair (just had it done Saturday) and get gel manicures every other week.  My Dr. said both were fine.  But he is also super laid back and I am on ZERO food restrictions other than reduced caffeine, drugs and alcohol (duh).
  • My doctor doesn't care about any of the stuff you listed, as long as I'm in a well ventilated place. DH is cleaning our bathroom right now because we're having issues with the vent, and the fumes seem to build up in there no matter what we do. My hair is getting done next week, I've had a few pedicures, and I also eat sushi from reputable places, and deli meat when I want it.

  • I have swapped my salon nails for Jamberry nails. They are free of all the harmful stuff you don't want near you while pregnant - they are just heat activated stickers.
As for the cleaning products, my husband buys into all that, so I get out of bathroom cleaning duty for 9 months.
    SCORE!

I have jamberries. So cute! but they never quite stay on like you hope. And I suuuper hate when it starts to lift and you run your hands thru your hair. I totally tore some hair a few times. Ouch!!!

  • I like to get my hair done just a couple times a year, and I specifically asked my doctor at my last appointment, and she said it's not a problem at all. Didn't even seem concerned!

  • I don't get my hair dyed, but I've always gotten pedicures in my pregnancies.  Not regularly, but a few.  In terms of cleaning...yeah, I just keep things well-ventilated.  Bleach I won't touch, but it gives me headaches anyways so it doesn't really matter.  And I like to use Method cleaning products while preggo because a) they work, b) I don't worry about what's in them, and c) they smell pretty good!

  • My doctor told me if I was going to be doing an extensive amount of cleaning (like nesting... that ish gets crazy...) with chemicals just to wear gloves, which makes sense. I usually do just because I almost always have to deal with my toddler immediately after or sometimes during.
  • Well from what I have heard, it's ok as long as it's past first trimester and as long as the room is well ventilated, you use gloves and wash your scalp well after the colouring is done!
I too want to colour my hair but I am confused if I should or not, I will probably partly do it, I think ombrés are perfectly safe as they don't reach your bloodstreams? Read it online somewhere...
  • My doctor gave me a list of do's and don'ts. It just said no hair dye in the first trimester. I made an appointment at week 13 and it felt amazing lol.

@sugarrush-2 honestly I assumed you got banned for something and rejoined and made a new username :D.   Not that I think you are doing anything that you should be banned for!

I have a 2 at the end of my name because I couldn't log into my bump account from years ago and I didn't have the email address anymore to retrieve the password  :(

  • I guess I am the only one but I do not use nail polish or hair dye during pregnancy.  Nail polishes are huge endocrine disrupters.  This is just a short period of time where I am growing a human being inside me and I want to be as safe and careful as possible :)
  • My doctor said hair dye was totally fine, but I waited until the second trimester just to be safe.
