  • I forgot about the leg cramps! Those were horrible! I haven't had any yet this time around but I bet they're on their merry way.

  • I've heard that potassium helps, so I was eating bananas in the eveing, but now on the GD diet I have to be careful about fruit, and my normal banana ice cream sundae is definitely not going to work. My leg still hurts. I'm trying to flex my foot and stretch it out as much as possible, but it doesn't seem to be improving.
  • @AdaByron I had really bad leg cramps during my track and cross-country seasons in high school. My coach swore by eating pickles or drinking pickle juice. Not sure if your a pickle person but it may be worth giving it a shot.
  • My grandmother swears by pickle juice!!! I thought she was the only one!
  • So at my OB appt I mentioned the glucose test and timing to take it. She said that between 26-28 weeks is the optimal time but that you're more likely to fail the 1 hour even if you don't have GD if you take it at 28 weeks rather than earlier. I don't know the physiological reasons why but my butt will be at the lab bright and early at 26 weeks.

  • @dancegurl1118  my doctor doesn't test until then either.  My next appt is at 24 weeks and I will be scheduling it for as soon as I can.  I just want to get it over with.

I like pickles, but hard no to drinking pickle juice. I'll have to see if eating massive amounts of pickles is ok with the GD diet.

I wrote a note on mine! My husband definitely would have drank it mistake, haha.

I actually know someone who's husband drank it and she didn't notice until then morning of her test!!

I have a question, and I hope I am not out of line for asking it. I mean no harm or hurt. I apologize if my question results in such. Every year around this time, pictures and memes start going around Facebook about not posting joke pregnancy announcements out of respect for couples with infertility issues. My question is: is it really an issue for those of you who have struggled, or is it a case of people starting drama and looking for 'likes' when there isn't really anything to be upset about? Personally, I don't think they are funny, more annoying than anything, but I am curious how people that are genuinely affected by the 'jokes' react. If this is out of line, please feel free tell me to mind my own business and buzz off. It's just something I have been thinking about the last few days.
  • @manillabar My doctor told me to go sometime after 28 weeks, too.
  • Re: Glucose test - I'll be 27+6 when I take my glucose test. I hadn't heard that you're more likely to fail closer to 28 weeks, not sure how that makes sense considering it's when most doctors recommend taking it. Weird.

Re: Leg cramps - I've only had leg cramps a couple of times during this pregnancy but when they do happen, they come in the middle of the night and are absolutely horrible. Flexing my foot and even getting up and walking does NOTHING for me. I had one the other night that lasted probably 20 minutes and I just laid there and waited for it to subside. My foot and calf were actually very sore the next day
  • I know for us while trying for so long to conceive with our current baby (got pregnant first month trying with DS but took over a year with this pregnancy) every pregnancy announcement I saw from friends on FB crushed me. I'd cry for days because so and so became pregnant before me and I know if one of them were to have said "haha just kidding" well idk that I would have taken it personally but I would probably have deleted them from FB because it's just very insensitive.
  • Is it normal for everyone else that the dr sends the drink home? Do you take it with you and drink it at your appointment or do you drink it before you go?

I get my drink when I get to my appointment and they won't let you leave until your blood work is done.
  • As a mom who struggled with recurrent losses and 2 years of testing and poking and prodding before my rainbow DD1 I would also find the "jokes" offensive and hurtful (I'm not on social media though so I don't have to see this nonsense). Even now pregnant with #2 it would sting. And every woman with infertility that I've known is hurt by these "jokes" without fail ever year. There's nothing remotely funny about it. It's very hurtful. Even normal pregnancy announcements are hard but "joking" about it is just inconsiderate.

  • Why would someone post a joke pregnancy announcement? I've never heard of anyone doing that. I can't imagine why someone would.

    Bc clearly it's hilarious. :expressionless:smile:

I've had friends do it. I think it's dumb just bc it gets people excited for nothing. I've never experienced a loss, but I can see how that would get someone upset.

    **TW**
I have a friend who thought it was ridiculous that a woman was still upset about her baby being stillborn when it happened about 3 months ago... seriously? Why are people dumb? She was like 6 months along and delivered her deceased baby. And she's supposed to just get over that. Her. Baby. Died. This friend of mine can't get pregnant due to some genetic issue so maybe she just lacks empathy bc she never has imagined being pregnant. But holy cow was I shocked that she was so clueless. The second you find out you're pregnant, you calculate your due date. Think about the the time of year baby is born (summer baby - how fun!). How old they will be for their first Christmas. The list goes on and on. Even if you miscarry the very next day, all those visions are shattered. How does someone not get that??
  • I know a girl who did a joke pregnancy announcement for April Fool's a few years ago.  The comments were mostly from people fake-angry about the girl getting their hopes up.  At the time, I just thought it was stupid and AW-ing.  It didn't even occur to me that it would be insensitive to those trying to be pregnant or who have suffered a loss, but I can totally see that now.  This girl prides herself on being only focused on her career and her cat, so she thought it would be funny (ironic?) to make the pregnancy joke.

I will admit that before we TTC, I was not the most sensitive person in the world to these things so I generally give others the benefit of the doubt.  I still cringe at the things I used to say to my friends about how they looked during and post-pregnancy that I intended as compliments.  But now that I'm going through it, I can't believe I was such an idiot asshat.  I wish someone had pulled me aside and said something to me.

Also @ginger1228, my doctor's office gives you the drink at the appointment too.  You're not even allowed to walk around during the hour in case you work up your metabolism.  They just make you sit there the whole time.

  • Thanks for all of your responses, ladies! I appreciate your openness and candid discussion. I can't even imagine what it must be like to go through such pain. I try really hard to understand and be an ally to others, but sometimes I feel like asking questions, in the pursuit of learning and understanding, can cause more hurt and anxiety than help. Thank you for helping me to be a more sensitive and supportive person.
  • @ginger1228 I got mine at my monthly appointment before my 24 week one so I'd be ready to go. I'm supposed to drink it before and let them know before the hour is up when I arrive so they can draw my blood.

  • I'm planning on using an actual back pack for a diaper bag. It seems to make way more sense to me, and then I don't have to kill my shoulders with the extra weight (aka I can distribute it evenly. Heavy shoulder bags hurt me). Now I'm second guessing myself wondering why no one else seems to do this and use a shoulder bag. Am I missing something?

If not, don't mind me. FTM overthinking things.

  • @kerils this was the quickest thing I learned once I became FTM. I had a shoulder diaper bag and hated it - it wasn't bad if you are just carrying it to the car or stroller but if you plan to wear the diaper bag for a significant amount of time I'll go straight to the backpack. Shoulder bags are uncomfortable and slide off if you don't wear them cross body which I never liked. I keep the old shoulder diaper bag packed with extra diapers/wipes/clothes and that's what we use to drop them off at grandmas or the sitter but if we are going somewhere and I need to have the diaper bag with me I use a regular backpack.

I do know now they make diaper bags in the backpack style if you want it more catered to the baby (insulated/speciality pockets and such) but I never had a single issue with the regular backpack.

I think it's important to be able to get things out with one hand. A lot of the time you will be holding the baby in one hand and searching for a paci or something with the other. Or you'll have one hand on the baby to keep them from rolling during diaper change, and you need to be able to get a diaper and wipes with the other. I think it's easier to do in a shoulder bag, where you can look in and mostly see everything. There's more digging required in a backpack. But if there are a few different pockets to keep things organized so you know where everything is, I'm sure a backpack could work.
  • I have a PPB diaper bag with the option of 2 straps (backpack) or 1 strap. I preferred the 1 strap, DH preferred the 2. But honestly, it just lived in the trunk of our SUV. I don't like carryingn too much, so I'd wear baby, and toss a diaper/wipes in my purse when we went out (mall or whatever)

  • What @AdaByron said. I have never had a backpack style diaper bag or backpack as a diaper bag. The only time I've used a backpack was when going to Disneyland. I don't like the way backpacks look on an adult, it just reminds me of a child. That's just me personally. It is a very popular style amongst young moms but I just can't. When buying a bag I always think about what bag will work the best when I only have one hand to get I to it.
  • @kerils
I bought a diaper bag that IS a backpack at buybuybaby and I will never go back to a regular bag. It is specifically designed for use with kids. Wipes pocket and lots of storage. It has to clips on the straps to attach it to the stroller. We have travelled a lot (just me and DS because DH works a lot) to visit family and it saves me at the airport.

I had a cross body bag that I used as a diaper bag. Many people bought me diaper bags and I never actually liked the ones that had too many specific compartments. I felt like they were limiting and added bulk. Also, I agree that shoulder bags slip off too easily and hurt the shoulder.

Personally, I liked my large cross body bag (it was Fossil brand but I got it from TJmaxx on super sale) and I called it my "abyss bag" because I could carry everything in it without worrying it'd be too heavy or slip off my shoulder. I could push it behind me so it wasn't in the way, and when I needed something I could reach back or just push it to the front (all one handed) to grab whatever I needed.
  • @greenbean I thought the first episode was pretty boring.  It really picks up at the end of episode 2.  I felt the same way with Serial (season one) - it took me a while to get into it but I really ended up liking it.  Season 2 was not very good in my opinion.

  • @supermom83 I love cross body bags. It's what I'm loooking for in my diaper bag. I get that we all have different lifestyles and tastes so that all comes into play when picking a bag. It's all about what works best for you and your lifestyle. After having 3 kids a cross body bag is my bag of choice for my lifestyle.
