Traveling while Prego

Hello! I'm in a bit of a pickle. My friends and I have been planning a trip to Tulum, Mexico for a couple of months now. The trip is booked and set for this summer- at which point I will be 5 months pregnant. Of course, I didn't think I would be pregnant when I booked this trip. Currently there is a CDC warning concerning zika that is still in effect for Tulum (I also live in Florida, but no where near any cases). I have the insurance on the flight, so I can definitely cancel it. I just don't want to. Mexico. With girlfriends. This won't happen again for a LONG time. But also, zika. Don't want to risk that. WHAT DO I DO?! I'll bring this up to my midwife next week as well, just wondering what your thoughts are.  :s

    Definitely talk to your midwife! I personally wouldn't go because I'm BSC and being really overprotective about this baby in just about every way, and then I would sulk and have FOMO about it for a long time. I'm not saying that's the right decision and I'm sure there would be others who would absolutely go and just take precautions, but since you asked for opinions, my comfort level would be staying home from that trip.

    This is how I was feeling about Zika but sometimes I am BSC in the things I do...glad to know this isn't one of them!

    You know I'm pretty laid back about most things pregnancy related. This is not one of them. Zika really scares me.

    Definitely do not risk it.  I mean, talk to your midwife first, but I'm pretty sure they'll recommend not going.  I have a few friends that are pregnant right now that had to cancel pre-planned trips because of zika (per recommendations from their OBs).  It's not worth the risk!

    I would definitely talk to your midwife. I live in a county that has had confirmed cases of Zika and is also heavy with south/Central American tourism,  so mosquito precautions are just an every day thing here. I would trust your gut and really research things. Last year I remember hearing about people canceling their trips to Disney because of the risk so I don't fault anyone for being overly cautious.

    I wouldn't go, either. We don't even understand the full ramifications of zika exposure for the fetus yet. But what we do know isn't good. Too risky.

    One of my pastors actually disinvited me and my husband from a mission trip to Belize a year ago because he knew we were trying.  That said, baby was conceived in Cozumel while we were on a leisure cruise after we had stopped trying and I didn't use bug spray once the whole trip (granted it was February...).  All that to say, see what your HCP says and go with your gut even if it's not what your heart wants.

    November 9, 2016- Arrival of DD#1, 4yo
    March 1, 2017- 1 day late, feel like crap (low fever & exhausted) | Mom suggested test before taking meds, I laughed but did it anyway | BFP! *shock*

    I would not take the risk personally. I just don't think it's worth it even if CDCsaid risk was low.  It would be different if it was your best friends wedding or something and I get that a girls trip is way too tempting but just not worth a risk personally. It's just the next 7-8 months of your life that could be so critical to your life and your child. Mexico is not going anywhere - I promise :-).

    it wouldn't be worth the risk to me.  It's awesome that you have trip insurance, great thinking ahead!

    This is coming from somebody who was 5 months pregnant when going to Aruba last year. I gotten totally bitten up in the first 24 hours. Armed with all the statistics, I knew I was probably fine but spent my whole trip worried. Aruba was on the list by the time I got back home. So, if you are an anxious person, I wouldn't bother. If you think you can protect yourself and be cool, then talk with your health care professionals and keep considering. (I had the blessing of my high risk doc--that didn't help).

    No way.  You're not even supposed to go while you're ttc.  I'm not sure what doctors would go against CDC recommendations.  Be safe!

    I just got three pages worth of info at my doctors appointment warning me against Zika. It's totally not worth it to risk a lifetime of pain and agony for your baby just so you can live it up for a few days in Mexico. Have you read about what Zika does to babies? Why in the world would you risk that for a vacation?

    I'm super laid back about pregnancies at this point in my life, and I absolutely would not go!! Do your girlfriends know? Would they consider rescheduling it? A new mommy with a new baby could definitely use a vacation! And maybe you could do a local girls trip this year? If not, I would probably stay home, most likely cry a lot, and binge watch birthing shows while eating large amounts of ice cream!!

    I'm supposed to travel to FL at the end of summer but if worse comes to worse and mosquitos are bad, I'll hang out indoors. I'm pretty confident it'll be manegeable. And 50/50 it will be rainy hurricane season and not beach weather anyway. Taking lots of things to keep occupied.

    I would not go. My high risk OB told DH not to go to Riviera Maya for his friend's wedding even though I'm staying home. FWIW we were there two years ago and went to Tulum. I picked up a bacterial stomach infection even though we stayed in a resort. The medication they gave me is not pregnancy safe. Please don't risk it!

    Just saw my dr today..she said no travel to zika areas.  If it were me I'd never be able to forgive myself if God forbid I contracted it.  I'd definitely pass
