TTTC Checkin 03/22/2017 and 03/28/2017

Hey everybody,

It's checkin time...

Congratulations for any BFP's and hugs to anybody who needs one!  FYI, please be prepared to use this thread for next week's checkin as well, 'cause I'm headed to the Bahamas for a little vacation!!

I'm still planning to try to log in with my phone to check on the board but I'm not sure how reliable my internet access is going to be.

How is everybody doing?

Re: TTTC Checkin 03/22/2017 and 03/28/2017

  • @GoldenKeys enjoy you vacation!! Sounds like fun!!

We had our initial consult with the RE yesterday. I felt very overwhelmed and honestly a little down afterwards. I can't really explain why. Maybe I'm just sad that this is where we are at.

He is going to do a repeat SA for MH, some more blood work for me, and an HSG next cycle. He recommended IUI as long as MH counts are the same or higher as the last SA. They also didn't test for morphology for the first SA, so as long as that is good also then we will be moving forward with IUI. I am thinking probably May for the first one as long as all the testing comes back fine since we have some testing the next few weeks and I don't think we can do that and IUI at the same time. No treatment recommendation for MH (I asked about Clomid). He said to let's see what the SA shows and if we want he can refer us to a urologist.

MH was funny after we left, he was like "I'm surprised how much he was focused on you, asking you questions and doing testing on you when I'm the one the with problem" and I was like "well, really, this is all about me!" It made me laugh.

QOTW: I would say my greatest achievement is my education. I was always very focused on school and went through it as quickly as possible. I graduated with my master's degree when I was 23.

  • Hi, everyone!  Still just hanging around, haha.  Have about 6 weeks to go before we can repeat my recurring miscarriage bloodwork so I'm just trying to focus on other things, (good luck, right?)

I'm throwing a party at our house for my husbands 30th in 6 weeks though, so that is a pretty great distraction.  I'm also really struggling to lose this weight so I've decided to do a 21 day cleanse that I'm starting soon so all good distractions, I'm looking forward to being as healthy as I possibly can be once we start trying again.  We should be moving forward with timed intercourse (letrozole + trigger shot) because all of hubby's tests have been perfect!

Have any of y'all sought counseling while TTC?  I am thinking about finding a therapist...I can't wait to be pregnant again but the thought also terrifies me, I'd love to be able to find a therapist that I can see through my pregnancy.

  • Well I was in my 2WW but it looks like that is ending early this month. So I've been spending my morning trying not to cry at work, my desk sits in the middle of the hall so there is no hiding. I have my first cycle of Clomid to start this cycle, so here's hoping that does the trick. Was kind of hoping I wouldn't need it but oh well.

Hope everyone's day goes better than mine!

  • @Kim41313 GL with your HSG and other tests.

AFM: Just waiting for AF so I can go in and have my ultrasound to see if the cyst is gone.  I am thinking she is on her way.  I appeared to have some spotting this morning.  The resident's and our activity director at work baked cookies this morning and ever since that first batch came out of the oven my system has been in cookie craving overdrive....which usually means AF is imminent as well.

Mainly just trying to stay positive this week.  Works been rough lately, DH has been home sick every day this week so far, and today I think my hormones are just making me plain moody.  A friend and I are meeting in Madison (Wisconsin) this weekend.  We are going to this Geek craft expo that I have been super looking forward to for a while now.

QOTW: I feel at this point in my life my greatest achievement is two-fold.  First, that I completed my Masters degree (while working full time) which led me to the second half, my job.  I am very proud of where I am now career wise.  I love my job and love the difference I can help make in my residents' and their families' lives.

@BWhitta I have not sought any type of counseling, but I know a few of the ladies on TTGP have and from what I have read (I lurk a lot over there) it has helped them tremendously. They even have counselors who specialize in infertility. GL!

    @Charligirl28 (hugs!) AF is such a b*tch!

@hoffmanr7 thanks! And FX the cyst is gone!

General question for anyone who may know, when is the HSG usually scheduled? My GYN said CD 3-5, but the imaging place she is sending me to said day 7-10? I know they want to do it after AF to make sure I am not KU. Also, for those of you who have had it, who did it for you? I was kind of surprised my GYN was sending me to an imaging place. Based on previous conversations I've had with her I assumed she would be the one to do it.
  • @BWhitta I see a therapist for my TTC angst and it has helped a lot. Check with your insurance they might help with some coverage, I only pay $16 for mine per visit. If you can I'd try to find someone who has experience with miscarriages or IF.

  • @Kim41313 I had to schedule my HSG on day 10. I think they want to be sure you are done bleeding etc so that they don't push all of tnhatbup through your tubes. They also told me no sex from AF until after the test. I also had mine done at an imaging facility. Your GYN's office probably doesn't have a large x-ray machine. The one they used where I went was huge. They did have a doctor do mine instead of the technician. It wasn't my doctor however.

  • @GoldenKeys - ooh! I hope you have an awesome time!

@Kim41313 - I'm pretty sure my HSG was on day 8.

I know what you mean about being down after meeting the RE. Now, it's not so bad - I'm like: "How often can we see you, sir? What can you tell me about what's wrong?" But our first meeting... I dunno, sometimes this whole IF journey feels like a nightmare, like I keep hoping it's not actually happening and that I'm going to wake up and will be pregnant, just like that. Our first RE meeting was surreal and strange and eerie all at once, and if I'm honest, I think I was still in denial a little bit. Like: "Oh, we don't need to be here. I'm probably pregnant right now." I remember being really angry that we had to see an RE at all. Then after, I'd replay our RE saying: "you're infertile" over and over.

Anyway, FX you get KU-ed after your first IUI!

@BWhitta - oh man. I have an unpopular opinion on counselling, I think.

There have been times in my life when I've really benefited from therapy. For example, after my mom died, I saw a therapist for years. It took me so many tries to find a good therapist I liked, but when I found a really good one, it was like magic - so, so helpful. I didn't see her for coping with loss specifically, but because there were so many ways my fears and insecurities would crop up and affect my behavior and relationships. Ie. I had a lot of anxiety about certain things, or a stifling perfectionist streak - apparently this is really common in people who lose parents young and are hyper-aware of their own mortality.

Anyway, that said, I firmly believe some counselors are better than others, and that seeing a bad one can be a huge waste of time and money. Lots of people say: "maybe you should see a counselor" but that's really only helpful advice if you can find a good one who knows their psychological theory and you are comfortable with and can trust.

    @Charligirl28 - I'm sorry. :(

@hoffmanr7 - ah! I hope AF comes and you have no cysts! And also that the craft expo is awesome.

AFM: Still benched... and mentally starting to prepare myself for IVF. I may be getting ahead of myself (we have one more IUI to try), but I want to be ready. I've started to have conversations with my DH too - like if we do IVF and they retrieve a bunch of eggs and none fertilize because they find out there's something wrong with my eggs, is he open to donor eggs from my sister? (Because I am totally open to it.)... I think DH's mind was blown a little bit. He's like: "honey, let's slow down and take it one step at a time."
  • Forgot about the QOTW!

I'm having a hard time with this one. A lot of my achievements I've had help with, so they don't feel like they're just mine. And then some of the things I've been trying to achieve, they haven't worked out just yet - and not just having a baby.

I've been saving to start my own business for about a decade, and about 2 years ago, I even made an offer on one! I was so proud, and retained a lawyer and an accountant and made sure my offer was super professional. Then it didn't work out - the sellers rejected my offer - and DH and I decided to take my nest egg and put an offer on a house instead, for a whole bunch of reasons that are still sound. So now we're deep into our house project and there's no money for a business, though there will be eventually... I just have to be patient!

I'm hoping that will be my greatest achievement - finally having my business after all these years of fits and starts. :) Maybe because I've been working on it for so long, and have put so much towards it, it just feels like I haven't achieved much else yet.
  • Just chiming in. I like these checkins.

I'm currently waiting for this natural cycle to finish, and then I'm planning on starting birth control pills for my IVF cycle. It's a big step and I'm anxious about it. Since we're unexplained, my main worry is that I have no frickin idea what the IVF will reveal. Will there be enough eggs? Can egg and sperm fertilize? If they do, will the embryos grow? No idea.

@funkykey I totally get what you're saying about eggs. I've found myself wishing I had a sister that I could use as a donor, if it came down to that. I'm a lot less comfortable with the idea of an anonymous donor for various reasons, so I kind of worry that if IVF fails, I'm not sure what the back up will be. But like your DH says, no need to get ahead of our selves.

@BWhitta, I've started seeing a therapist regularly. I did see an infertility-focused therapist a few times, but had mixed feelings about it. I felt that she had seen women go through this so much that ironically, she was maybe bored by what she was hearing. Now I'm seeing a more general therapist, and the plus side is I can talk about the issues in other areas of my life (like work).

@hoffmanr7 hope the cyst goes away!!

Congrats @PoeMasque!  Fingers crossed for a BFP for you!

AFM- Waiting not so patiently for AF to show up so we can get this next cycle started.  As soon as we get CD1 I'm booking our trip out West but I don't want to do it before AF shows up so I don't screw up my FET timing.

Weekly Question- Getting my masters has been my great accomplishment so far.  Hoping to add having a baby to that list this year.... I know it seems silly but after all we've been through finally making it to the other side would be a huge accomplishment for me.

  • @notamyrtle - I have those thoughts about IVF exactly. What will it reveal?! And instead of thinking about how maybe there might be a pleasant surprise, I just think: "It fails about 40% of the time. How do I prepare for the worst case scenario?"

Before saying we should slow down, my DH was like: "I married you, not your sister! No!" (after I pointed out it was essentially the same genetic material) but who knows... I don't think he thought we'd have to do IVF either. ;)

Anyway, many hopes you don't have to cross the "what now" bridge, and that your IVF is a success!

Also, re: QOTW: Certain publications. Are you a professional writer!? We should have known when you came up with the "notamyrtle" user name!! Sometimes I wonder if someone on these boards is famous... like someone is secretly Amal Clooney. Right now, I'm like: "OMG, have we all read @notamyrtle's work?!"

(Seriously, every time DH has to produce semen at the clinic, I'm like: "Look, yet another thing you have in common with George Clooney.")

@PoeMasque - they are beautiful!!! FX! The 31st cannot come quickly enough!

    @Worldtravler0522 - re:

  • Hello everyone :)
Well I am super excited this week, because after a freaking 91 day cycle - I got my period!! I'm not even upset it wasn't a BFP at this point, I'm just so glad I have a new cycle finally :D
That's all I really have to report this week, but it's an important one for me :)

QOTW:  What do you consider your greatest achievement so far?

@GoldenKeys  Enjoy your vacation.  I'm jealous.  It is down right frigid in the North East

@Kim41313  We had our initial consult with RE last Thursday.  When I was making the appointment I definitely had the thought of "How the f did we get here?"  I can commiserate with your feelings.  I have my HSG scheduled for today, it is CD 9 for me.

@Charligirl28 Having to be in public is the worst sometimes during this process.  FX for Clomid.

@hoffmanr7  Hope your cyst is gone.

@funkykey  I secretly thought that if DH has a problem with his sperm if he would be open to using his brother's..... Have not brought it up and probably won't until absolutely necessary.  What kind of business are you hoping to start?

@PoeMasque They are lovely!!!  FX for the 31st.

@Tops I love your greatest achievement.  May have to steal it.

    AFM

New here.  Went to RE for initial last Thursday.  Had day 3 testing on Friday.  HSG scheduled for later this morning (kind of getting nervous).  DH has SA and BW tomorrow morning.  I am really hoping that there is an easy fix for everything.  I talk to the IVF clinic on a daily basis because I just have so many questions.  Nothing about treatment will be discussed until my follow up on April 12th.

Greatest Achievement:  I like where I am professionally.  Even though DH and I are in it for the long haul, I love the fact that if anything happened between us I can be financially independent.

  • Af is supposed to arrive today, I'm hoping she holds off for the sake of timing so that we don't have to skip the next cycle. (I won't be able to go in for a u/s tomorrow because of work). I think I've come to terms with the fact we'll never do iui or ivf because of financial reasons, so next cycle will be our last cycle before we go in for more planning which is where I'm sure he will recommend moving on to iui or ivf and we just can't so I think next cycle will be our last.

  • @GoldenKeys have fun on your trip! I went to the Bahamas a few years ago and stayed at the Atlantis. It was amazing!

@Kim41313 I felt the same way after and even before my RE appointment. I think that's why I put it off for so long.

@BWhitta I thought about going to therapy after my m/c. Especially when my cat of 15 years was diagnosed with cancer and died a few months after my loss.

@hoffmanr7 I also worked full time while completing my master's degree. It was a huge accomplishment for me too!

@notamyrtle I would be really nervous about IVF too. I don't even have an official diagnosis as I'm still in the testing phase - but I am nervous just at the thought that I might have to do it.

@PoeMasque yay for your blasts! It's cool that you get a photo!!

@Tops congrats on the start of a new cycle after such a long one!

@SP128 good luck with your HSG! I also thought about using my BIL's semen if we had to. Never mentioned it to DH but it's always been in the back of my mind as a backup plan.

@kaitlink33 it sucks so bad the IF treatments mostly aren't covered. It's so unfair that so many people have to suffer because of the cost. I don't know what DH and I will do if that's our only option. We still owe so much on our student loans that we really can't afford the cost of IVF either and we wouldn't have much time to save up either.

For me, I'm in the TWW and also waiting for my followup appt with the RE in a few weeks. I did get my bloodwork results back from the lab and everything looks normal, but I'm curious to see what the RE thinks. I'm also curious to hear his thoughts on my sonos I had last week.

@PoeMasque congratulations on being PUPO! FX!!

Im over here on cycle cd10 (actually had to check FF to type that because I had no idea) just waiting for a follie check on Monday. Hopefully squeaking in IUI #2 this month.

    QoTW:
Is it silly to say aside from IF I'm just proud of where I am in life? I have a had the opportunity to play sports in college, I got my masters degree and now get to do what I love for work, I married a wonderful man, we bought a super cute house in a nice town, belong to a great church....I'm proud of all of it. Sometimes IF makes me forget how blessed I am. Stupid IF

  • @PoeMasque FX!!!

@Tops yay! I hope next cycle is a shorter one for you

    @SP128 GL with your HSG!

    @kaitlink33 ((hugs))

Thanks everyone for your input on scheduling the HSG. And I'm glad to know I'm not alone in my feelings on seeing the RE.  Also, wow! We have a lot of accomplished, successful and highly educated ladies here!  :)

After talking more to my DH last night, I'm not sure we'll be moving forward with IUI right away. He is more interested in trying to get his count up, seeing a urologist if we have to, and continue trying naturally for a few months. I get where he is coming from - the treatment is expensive (at lest $1000 for the IUI, plus meds, plus the SA and wash, plus any additional ultrasounds I may need during monitoring). But I just feel like we've been waiting so long already. We waited a long time to even start trying - we both really wanted to feel ready and like it was something we really wanted. And now almost a year later and here we are.

I also think he has slightly unrealistic expectations for how this will go. I've tried to tell him that the polyp I had removed is most likely not the reason for why we haven't conceived yet, but I'm afraid he still has high expectations for this cycle. And he has been working really hard to do what he can to improve his count (taking vitamins, exercising regularly). But I honestly don't think we're going to be able to do this without some help...

He is getting the SA on Monday, so I guess a lot of what we decide will depend on what that shows us.

Sorry for the dear diary..  :s
  • @Kim41313 Kim, totally hear you on the DH unrealistic expectations department. My DH was convinced IUIs would work for us, when the success rate is like 10-15% per cycle for unexplained infertility. If you're young-ish (I can't see poster's signatures on my cell) maybe you could compromise, but I would try to set a firm deadline with him and also have the urologist clearly explain if he thinks these other interventions (vitamins and such) are actually going to make a difference.

@funkykey Heh, not a professional writer, but very flattered that you would think so

  • Thanks for all the feedback guys, I definitely am looking into therapy and trying to decide if I should do a fertility specific one or not.  My RE has one on staff so we'll see.  @funkykey I totally agree about it needing to be the right one!  I saw one in college and I loved her so much!

In other news I think I am FINALLY starting my period which makes me SO happy, I have been bloated like crazy and just feeling so crappy.  I think I'm on CD70-something... (CD91 holy cow @Tops!!!!!!!)

  • @notamyrtle I'm 28, so in the world of TTC, yes I am young. Last night I tried suggesting we do IUI while working with a urologist. The RE told us 10 mil total after wash is basically the magic number for IUI (anything more than that doesn't have a higher success rate) and I feel like we could probably be around that number based on his last SA. But just on our own, the chances are lower than the IUI odds. So why not start trying IUIs and work with the urologist at the same time? That way if the urologist can't help us I won't feel like we are wasting time. And maybe we will have success with IUI. MH actually said something along the lines of  "As long as we are pregnant sometime in the next 2 years I would be happy with that." I almost spit my drink out. 2 years?! I'm sure we will have many more discussions about it, and it's very touchy and I was trying to stay calm lol. I am not okay with 2 more years of this if there's anything we can do to help it.
  • @Kim41313 I definitely agree, the best course of action would be IUIs while working with the urologist, and that is probably what the doctors themselves would recommend. Plus IUI can be quite successful for mild male factor issues. And yeah, the shorter you can make this journey, the better. Psychologically, it's draining.

  • @Kim41313 We'll be seeing an RE soon too and I definitely have feelings of dread. I never wanted it to come to this, but here we are. Sorry about the disagreement with DH. I feel like my DH is in denial about seeing the fertility specialist (he goes from super optimistic we'll magically get KU on our own--this is our last cycle trying on our own--or researching adoption...uhh there's a step in between!!) so I'm nervous about what will happen when we get there. I definitely wouldn't be okay with two years either!
@BWhitta I would love to see a counselor, and would've loved to even before TTC, but I don't think it was ever financially feasible and certainly isn't now that we're looking at forking over major money to an RE. I hope you find a great one and it's helpful!
    @Charligirl28 Sorry about AF. :(
@hoffmanr7 Hopefully your cyst will be gone!
@funkykey I hope your eggs will fertilize just fine, but if not, I hope you can bring your DH around to using your sister's eggs!
@notamyrtle FX for successful IVF when you get there!
@Tops So glad your 91 day cycle is over!!
@SP128 How did your HSG go?
@kaitlink33 I'm sorry. Hugs to you.
@PoeMasque FX so hard for you!!!

AFM, CD 9. This is our last cycle before seeing the RE...but I'm not sure when I should schedule an appointment. Should I just get a consult set up now since I know it can take a long time to get an appointment? I don't need a referral because IF is 100% OOP for me, but I looked at my insurance's list of providers, and there are two REs that come up... Is it possible that simple testing like blood tests would be covered with either of them and it wouldn't be with others? I'm confused.

QOTW: I don't know. Probably either graduating from college or buying a house (although we did get help from DH's parents on the latter). I wish I could say being a mom...

  • @notamyrtle thanks for the support! Maybe if I tell MH that my internet friends agree with me then I can convince him!  :p

@MJDsquared they may cover some "diagnostic" procedures (i.e. Blood work, etc.) and not treatment. Or it could be that the office visit itself is billed to insurance as a specialist. My insurance told me that if the doctor is in network then I would just have to pay the specialist copay for the office visit (which is a little more than a non-specialist). I didn't bother to check if he's in network because he's the only one so it doesn't matter, but I did end up paying the specialist copay at the office. But he also did a vaginal ultrasound so that may be what I was paying for. And of course, it's possible that I still get a bill in the mail. Either way, I hope some things are covered for you, that always helps, even if it's just a little bit!
  • I am amazed by how strong you all are. Seriously, you are some tough ladies! I am new to the game so i'm still getting used to all the lingo and tests, don't know what it all means. I'm sorry if I don't respond to everyone, it is like trying to decipher a foreign language. It is so overwhelming! I don't know how you all do it!

If the clomid doesn't work I don't know where I will go from here. Everything you have gone through sounds so intense and i'm not sure if I could handle it emotionally or financially. It feels very discouraging. As it stands now I have had to take of work for two ultrasounds so I can be monitored and have tests done, and we still don't know anything! I don't know how long I can keep that up.

  • @Kim41313 Thank you! That does make sense. I think I'll definitely use one of those two doctors just in case.

@Charligirl28 It takes a while to get the hang of it. I was having to go back and look at the user guides to look up abbreviations for a long time, and Googling ones that weren't listed! And there are still some rarer ones that I don't know what they mean (though I can't think of them off the top of my head, just when I see them).

@MJDsquared it took me about three weeks to get into an initial with an re. I thought it would be longer but three weeks still seemed long since I'm impatient. I won't have my follow up until mid April for treatment planning. I called mid February. This whole process takes forever and the tests they run are cycle day specific. Doesn't hurt to call and get an apt.

Maybe see if your gyn can do some of the preliminary testing ?

My hsg went really well. Tubes are clear and everything looks normal.

    Amen!

My H and I had a couple of huge go arounds before we started the IUIs - he was convinced - CONVINCED - it was just going to take us a little longer and we should keep trying on our own, and "I dunno about seeing a doctor - seems so unromantic". Eventually, I was like: "Look mister, we had a deal. Marriage is a social contract, and kids are part of the deal - this is what we agreed to before we said our vows and signed the paper." I was livid, but you know, sometimes you've gotta play enforcer.
    ;)

@funkykey  Love the reference to social contract.

Luckily in midst of this shitty situation, DH is pretty supportive on medical intervention.  When RE said 10% chances with IUI, DH chimed up and was like "I'm not getting any younger!"  I think he's leaning on going straight to IVF.

  • @Charligirl28 it definitely is like a foreign language lol! It takes some time to get used to it. Feel free to ask any questions that you have if you don't know what's going on or what the acronyms mean. I don't think anyone here would mind explaining something!

@MJDsquared I forgot to mention above that it took us about 2 months to get in with the RE. I definitely don't think it hurts to try to get an appointment in case you have to wait a while.

@SP128 glad the HSG went well and there are no blockages!

@funkykey  "I dunno about seeing a doctor - seems so unromantic". This made me lol. It reminds me of that t shirt that says "my doctor knocked me up"  :D

I'm sure this is going to be an ongoing discussion between the 2 of us. I'm *usually* able to get him to see my way, I just know that with him it's slow and steady wins the race. If we end up at a urologist (which I think we will) and I can get the doc to agree with me I think MH will come around. And if not I'll put on my enforcer hat and remind him of our contract!  ;)
  • @Kim41313 The "My doctor knocked me up" shirt sounds awesome.

I finally heard back from my doctor's office today, I was starting to get really anxious because I called on Wednesday afternoon and didn't hear back until after the office closed today. I start 5days 7.5 mg Letrozole tonight and go for an u/s to check follicle size(s) cycle day 12.

  • I'm so glad I found this board. Everyone here is so lovely and supportive. And to those of you that have been going through this for years - I really admire you. We've only been going for 8 months and its already having such a toll emotionally (on myself and my hubby), which is leading to weight gain from emotional eating. Ugh, this is such a crappy roller coaster and I don't know how I'll manage to stay sane if this continues for years.

Sorry for the venting, just helps to get it off my chest every now and then...

Hubby gave his sample for a SA yesterday too, so I'm very nervously waiting to hear the results. We know there are problems with me, so it would just be crushing if we found out there were problems with him too.

Also, could anyone give me an idea of what to expect from my first RE appointment? It's just over a week away now and I am so incredibly nervous.

@Tops  I too admire those who have been dealing with this for years.  I've been dealing with this since May 2016 and it has taken over my life I feel at times.

My DH gave his SA sample yesterday morning too.  I recently had my initial consult with RE.  It was pretty relaxed and no big deal.  I kinda wanted him to whisper me some secrets or something.  All he did was review our medical history forms and order testing.  Luckily, I just started my period the day prior and was able to get in for day 3 testing.  I just had HSG scheduled (also cycle day specific) last Thursday.  He also answered questions.  What cycle day will you be when you go?

Don't be nervous about the appointment.  The worst part for me was making the appointment and as it approached the thought of "How did I get here?" creeping in.

We have a follow up mid April to discuss testing results and treatment planning.

  • @Tops for my first RE appointment there was just a lot of talking.  We came up with a game plan and talked about my issues and what we've done so far and what we should do next.  We met with the doctor, our nurse, and a finance person. We didn't get started with any physical things until my first period following that appointment. I would come armed with questions and don't be afraid to ask too many. For me my biggest worry was how this would impact my job and so I had all kinds of questions about hours and appointments. Good luck!
