@jessieR358 thanks so much. I will definitely be looking for a recipe for those cookies!
Here's a great one I used for almost a year. It makes a HUGE batch that would last me about 3 weeks if I ate 3 cookies/day. You can actually turn any cookie recipe into lactation cookies by adding flax seed, oatmeal & brewers yeast, FYI.
1c butter (can replace with coconut oil) 1c sugar 1c brown sugar 4T water 2T flax seed meal 2 eggs 1t vanilla 2C flour 1t baking soda 1t salt 3c oats (not the quick kind) 1c chocolate chips (I added more) 4T brewers yeast (don't add any more, will ruin the taste of cookies)
-Preheat oven 350 -mix flaxseed & water & let sit for 3-5min -beat butter, sugar, & brown sugar -add eggs & mix well -add flaxseed mix & vanilla. Beat well -in separate bowl sift together flour, brewers yeast, baking soda & salt -add dry ingredients to butter mix -stir in oats & chips -scoop onto baking sheet and bake 12min
(Eat a few a day, every day!!)
ETA: You can freeze the raw cookie dough and thaw it as needed to bake fresh or bake all at once and freeze the finished cookies. They don't last more than 3-5 days after they are baked - they get stale quick
Yay I just found out my insurance covers the Medela Pump-in-Style, which I've read good things about. It comes with two 5 oz bottles -- will that be enough or should I buy more bottles, perhaps in a larger size like 8 oz? I'm a complete newbie so I don't know "what I'm doing" lol
I liked using the milk storage bags. Whenever I would fill up the bottle from the pump, I would dump it in the bag and store it in the freezer for later. I did end up getting 2 extra bottles because I hated cleaning them so often LOL
@margareth You got some good suggestions, just adding I also had extra bottles on hand for pumping purposes- I think I had 4 smaller ones and at least 2 of the larger ones. There were times I wish I had more ( getting behind on dishes or whatnot) but mostly that was enough for me and I pumped a lot. My guy also didnt like the medela bottles for eating but loved the munchkin latch ( they have an anticolic bottle that removes air bubbles- Amazing)
Reading through this helped me a lot. I had a hard time with DD and only nursed for two weeks. My nipples bled and she kept losing weight so I decided to stop. I want to try again this time around!
@Sugargirl1019 Thanks! Is it covered to rent, or to buy? I guess I just have to call and find out! This is all news to me...
It is covered by insurance to just give to you, and you keep it! It's part of the Affordable Care Act.
ETA: I believe the brand of pump definitely varies by insurance on what they cover though. I hope you can get a good one for free!
Each insurance company has a list of approved vendors with covered pumps. I had Antem with my DD and got a Medela Pump n Style.
I wholeheartedly second what @lilpoots said...google "paced bottle feeding" and watch the video. Life saver.
I think when to intro a bottle varies from kid to kid. My DD needed a supplement on formula for the first two weeks due to a little jaundice. Then I switched to exclusive breast but pumped here and there because I thought I needed to stock up for when I went back to work at 3m. I supplemented bottles of the breastmilk sometimes when I wondered if she was getting enough from the breast...so it worked in my favor. I breastfed through 10m and only stopped after DD drew blood by biting a few times and the two of us started struggling...I continued to exclusively pump til one year and supplemented frozen milk with formula for a few months past that. I also had extra milk bagged early on and frozen only lasts soooo long...I ended up giving a month's supply to a fellow S14 mom who lived near me who had an ill kiddo. But you can give it to banks for sure if you have extra!
second note...I had to move cross country when DD was 8m. I had a ton of frozen milk. You can ship it but you do so with dry ice...I think I fed ex'ed it. You just call the shipper and ask what their guidelines/restrictions are...it arrived still frozen in like 24-36hr.

Fyi...for anyone who is gluten free:
sub the oats for gf oats and you can get a gluten free Brewers yeast via Amazon...I believe it's made with beet. I used the same recipe...it's delish!!

^^this. I used Lansinoh as well. I would dump into a bag from bottle and refrigerate in case I needed it. After 24-48h, if not used, I'd freeze it by lying the bag flat on a a pizza box etc in freezer. Once frozen, the bag when into a big freezer bag marked with the month. That way I could go and use the oldest month first when I needed the milk. No need for fancy storage systems...I never used mine.
I exclusively breastfed my DS for 5-6 months, I would feed him every 2 hours when I was home and when I started work at 3 months I came home every 2-3 hours and breastfed him and pumped when I thought I had enough milk, I also pumped in the evenings and stored them. The good thing was my workplace was about 5 minutes away so I could pop in anytime I wanted!
