GTKY Tuesday

2»

Re: GTKY Tuesday

  • This is fascinating.  I'm from the Midwest and call carbonated drinks "soft drinks" (and looking at that map, it seems right on from where I from - neat!)

@jessafishy I would pronounce merry differently from Mary/marry, but the others would all sound the same.

I use dinner/supper interchangeably to mean the last meal of the day.

  • @sjohns08 Interesting!!! Never heard the term "jibby" for pacifier - despite living in the West Coast and Midwest (US). Where is your dad's family from?

  • @mrsjager north western Illinois. It's such an odd word and I'm hoping this LO doesn't take to a pacifier so I don't have to listen to him say it repeatedly
  • I'm from the Canadian Maritime provinces (born and raised in New Brunswick, now live in Nova Scotia) and I have used every single one of these!

  • @shan24 Oh, my heart. My grandma is from rural Nova Scotia and she does the inhaled affirmative so much I picked it up as a kid and still do it. <3

  • @buttercream_frosting love it! I would pay to see an Americans face if you ask them something like "are you wearing thongs today?"

  • @bluejeanbabi05 LOL During my last trip to LA, I totally took the piss out of my adorable aunty. She was blushing and giggling because I kept saying stuff like "Let's go buy thongs for everyone! Let's buy thongs for grandpa!" and told her I was going to ask the sales staff to help me buy thongs. She was dying.

Originally from South Alabama and I say "buggy" too, but I've always just called them "drinks" or just used their names. Mainly because we basically only drank Dr. Pepper at home haha.

I grew up calling a sandwich on one piece of bread (like you fold it in half with PB&J or something on it) a "bend back". My whole family calls them that, but I remember going to a friend's house when I was little and asking for one and they had no clue what I meant lol. I always thought that was the proper name for it. I still have no idea what most people call it. Just half a sandwich, I'm guessing lol? My husband calls it that now too.

  • @buttercream_frosting omg, I love it! My mom has always called flip flops thongs and so did I growing up. Once I realized they are a type of underwear, I quickly quit calling them that lol.

Also, now that I know you're an Aussie, I'm totally reading your posts with an accent  :D
  • @MamaBear148 A fellow Miamian!! That article is so accurate it hurts lol

  • @shan24 I'm from Nova Scotia as well, Cape Breton Island actually. I moved along time ago but I can remember my family saying so many of these phrases and still when I talk to my mom or uncle they say some of these things and sometimes I say them to people and they think I'm weird. I still use the word biff lol. I'm currently in NW Ontario.
  • Haha! @sjohns08 I think you caught most of the ones I was going to mention. I was born in Milwaukee so raised with sucker, pop, sub sandwich, but have lived in Jersey and New York for most of my life so haven't used those terms in ages. Now it's lollipop, soda and hero. Oh and in the Midwest I used to remember sack for paper bag. And I'm surprised no one had raised the binkie/sucker/pacifier one earlier. I go with pacifier, but I don't remember which region I picked it up from. I think most of my friends around here say binkie. Oh, and I say stroller but I think I've heard that in all regions I've lived in.

  • @cooaladolll to me a pacifier is a suce. I grew up in a bilingual French/English community and sucer means to suck in French. In non-French communitiesaround here, it's mostly called a soother.
  • I wish I had any good or weird things I say.

I use cart, diaper (not nappy), soda, Binky (instead of pacifier), lollipop, flip-flop.

Ill keep an ear out at work today though!
  • Oh and another one: we say pavement instead of sidewalk!
