How many times did you workout last week and what's your goal for this week? I got out and walked in the AM 4 out of 5 days last week.  and got out after work probably 3 times (we had some after work things that prevented me).  I want to try to make this a habit, so at least 4 times, but maybe 5 before work, and walk each night after work that we dont have someone over for house stuff.

What exercises are you doing now? walking

What are you healthy eating goals? I want to continue with my healthy meals, and make sure that if I snack, its not just candy (which is all im craving now)

GTKY: What's your favorite health/fitness blog/website? I dont have one.

How many times did you workout last week and what's your goal for this week? 5 days

What exercises are you doing now? mix of Pure Barre classes 3x/week; I have an indoor Peloton spin bike and do on demand spin classes 2x/week; and maybe 1x/wk I do interval and/or strength training at our work's gym during lunch break. I quit Crossfit last year thanks to a knee injury.

What are you healthy eating goals? To eat more veggies & protein. Right now I'm still not eating much bec everything still makes me sick! So I typically eat fruits, protein shakes, toast. Meat & protein makes me nauseous, and so does basically everything else. If I can eat then that's great. So far shakeology protein shakes with fruits & almond milk are my to-go items.

  • not sure if this belongs in this thread or another... but how much weight has everyone gained so far? I'm trying to figure out how I'm progressing. I started above the average weight, but I'm super athletic so I have muscular legs and I was in great shape so weight was not a problem for me. I know weight didn't mean a lot. But a lot of calculators on these websites take that into factor when calculating how much you're supposed to gain each trimester. I'm just wondering how everyone thinks about this and if people are tracking.

How far along are you? Just over 15 weeks.

How many times did you workout last week and what's your goal for this week? I worked out 4 days last week, this week I plan on working out the same or more.

What exercises are you doing now? I play volleyball, take yoga, batting cages, run with the dogs

What are you healthy eating goals? I need to pick healthier snacks

  • How many times did you workout last week and what's your goal for this week? 3x (yoga twice and one run - DH was out of town all week so couldn't get more runs in. Then when he did get home anew England decided to be 10 degrees and windy. Super)

What exercises are you doing now? See above. Transitioning away from long distance running. The off-season always does me good anyway.

What are you healthy eating goals? I'm just starting to be able to stomach green juices again so I hope to get at least two of those this week. I need to cut out gluten as the nausea has decreased and I have no excuse. It backs me up so much.

GTKY: What's your favorite health/fitness blog/website? I love my local running group on FB, but that doesn't really help anybody here. For health I followed the Medical Medium's thyroid detox to get pregnant with this baby. It involved a lot of juices and I highly recommend it. I read the book and follow him on Pinterest, but I think his recommendations are targeting a lot of health issues that slowly drain women.

I haven't worked out very much at all besides walking. Now that I'm feeling better, I'm looking to change that. My goal is to work out 3 times a week.

What exercises are you doing now?
Walking and some prenatal workout videos on youtube.

What are you healthy eating goals?
More fruits and veggies. I really don't like any fruit besides apples (it's a texture thing).

How many times did you workout last week and what's your goal for this week? 7 for 7. I'll try for all again. I have an Apple Watch that helps keep me motivated. Even if it's an easy 30 minutes in the elliptical, I try and get all my circles.

  • Continued convo from last week:

    @DeansGirl14 and @sgrant432
I completely agree that pregnancy workouts aren't hard enough to KEEP you in shape if you already exercised before you were pregnant. I also have a hard time walking fast enough to work up a sweat without lower abdominal cramping. My solution is to set the treadmill straight uphill which eventually gets me breathing harder even if I have to walk at a 2.8 setting. Haha!

I talked to my nurse midwife about abdominal exercises, and she said that once the size of your belly limits you from doing something, you should stop, but otherwise, you don't really have to avoid certain abdominal exercises. Even laying on your back for a minute or two do bicycle crunches is ok. The other thing to keep in mind is that you don't want to fall onto your stomach. I have to keep that in mind and not exhaust myself to a point with pushups or planks that I can't sit back correctly. Wouldn't want to just collapse on the bump...

What are you healthy eating goals? I need to eat more frequently. One day last week, I felt terrible toward the end of the day. I figured I was just tired because I'm preggo, but then as soon as I ate a snack when I got home, I was completely better. Lesson learned that when I feel tired, need to eat a little veggie or yogurt snack.

Of interest though, if you know what your OB/midwife has set for your goal weight gain. A study was done that looked at weight gain in the 2nd trimester and it is the most predictive time for whether you will end on target. What they found was that women who gained in target were at target at the end, those that gained more ended up being over target at the end no matter what they did in the 3rd trimester and same is undergainers. So this trimester is the time to get the weight right. This just means, focus on healthy food and walking.

I know a lot of people in my life have input on the status on my weight. My dad thinks not enough ("are you sure you're eating enough") and my DH is like, um, what is happening?? Haha. Pregnancy is nuts.
  • @oriole2017 I agree with the advice above your ob is the best person to ask this question. They'll be able to set realistic weight loss goals with you.

  • @emilyrose807 i agree with you on the ab exercises.  I have woken up some mornings and realized I slept on my back with no issues.  I figure as long as I can still do that, I can do a 60 second workout on my back for a bit longer.  I just don't want to tell others something that doesn't work for them!

  • hey everyone. Before you think I'm out there to cause a $h!t storm, Can you read my post to the end to see what I was referring to. I never meant for specifics. You don't need to tell me I weighed 140 and now I'm 150. I was more interested in what they say your target weight gain each trimester is, because there is a low number for baby growth and a high number that's not contributing to baby growth but just fat to your body. I said that I had a hard time using those sites b/c although I don't consider myself above average, those sites do, and they're not taking into account muscle weight. In my post I specifically said I'm interested in "how much you're supposed to gain each trimester. I'm just wondering how everyone *thinks* about this and if people are tracking." ---> IE. Are you tracking yourself and do you have any advice on this! I didn't say you had to give me your numbers. But I was more asking like if I gained 10lbs by my current week, is that normal? Granted there is no normal, but any multiple-times moms out there that can weigh in on their advice? Gaining too quickly making it hard on yourself for the end of the pregnancy, carrying that weight, losing that weight. How are you balancing your greater hunger drive with weight. I'm a FTM and I'm just trying to gain feedback from a sample of people. Are you 5% over your normal weight, are you using anyting to track it, are you comparing yourself to any chart or website? Do any of you have any weight goals with your doctor?

I don't see how a question like this is any different than talking about blood tests, scans, asking opinions on heart rates and what their NT test showed, etc. Obviously a doctor can only tell you medical advice, but we're not on here searching for medical advice, we're on here to share experiences and for some of us, find similarities in our pregnancy to help aid us in our own. I just wanted to see how you were all doing to get an idea how wide spread things are or if those chart things are actually true. Let's not jump to any conclusions here on me. I meant is simple enough.

  • @emilyrose807 thanks for that information. I lost weight in my first trimester and now I'm starting to gain weight in my second tri. I just got a little shocked at how quickly it seemed to come on. My doctor was not concerned. I was just curious if the rate at which you pack it on starts tapering off until the third tri or if I need to make adjustments now. What you said was important b/c that tells me the time to change is now b/c those results didn't matter what you did in the 3rd tri, according to the study. Do you have a link to the study?

@oriole2017 You are now contradicting what you said (see bold). You are free to ask your own specific question about your weight gain, however, I dont see how it will help you to ask us how much weight we have gained.  Maybe you need to word your question better so that we can better understand what you want to know.

@littlebug2010 i didn't mean for numbers. And this topic is of particular interest to me to help keep me motivated and healthy. I can't do all the exercises I am used to doing to keep my weight off. I am trying to see if others are in a similar boat or if this is status quo pregnancy weight gain. Or am I indulging too much now that I have my appetite back. I wanted to find similarities to see if what I experience is on a broader scale, or if I legit reason to stress over this. I get weight is a touchy issue although I see no reason why it should be, whatever people weigh is whatever people way, I don't judge. But you can certainly talk about it without going into specifics to stay away from numbers

  • @littlebug2010 and you can answer that question in whatever fashion you want. I followed up and said you do NOT need to provide numbers. Is that clearing it up enough? You can reply any other way you want. You can say,  "I gained more weight than I thought I would" or "I haven't really gained any weight yet" or "I gained a few lbs on par with where my doctor said I should be". Lots of answers don't need to contain numbers. You can say as little or as much as you'd like to help answer the question. No contradiction. The rest of the first post explains what I was asking and what I was looking for. My second follow up post that you said was contradicting further explains what I'm asking in more detail.

  • @oriole2017 I think the fact that there is a exercise checkin each week, and that we are contributing to this means that we are all looking for support in this area.  The problem with checkin in with weight is that none of us are you.  Weight numbers are so specific to the person that even saying that you might be up 10 pounds is not helpful. You have to speak with your doctor about that.  And weight is a touchy issue.  There could be people on this board who are truly struggling and the support for healthy exercise is what should be focused on, not the weight that you are or aren't gaining.

  • @littlebug2010 I did say I recognize weight is a touchy subject. But it's also important for baby growth and development. Bottom line is you can't have a healthy baby without putting on weight obviously.  I didn't mean to focus on numbers, but for example, in the later stages, you actually ARE looking at numbers. You're apparently supposed to gain a pound a week or something. So with that in mind, at this point in our pregnancy, to what effect are you looking at weight to know if you're on target for the remainder of the pregnancy. As another blogger pointed out, this is a critical trimester to make sure you stay on track. And the doctor checks your weight gain/loss at every appointment, or at least mine does. I was wondering between appointments, other than focusing on exercise and well eating, you're still going to gain weight. And how are we tracking if that weight is good or not?

  • @oriole2017 I totally understand that weight is important through the whole pregnancy but again comparing what you are and arent gaining online is not going to help.  Each person is so different and even in the later stages, you arent always hoping to gain 1pound per week.  Some people might be, but some might be at 2 pounds, and some might be at half a pound, all of that is dependent on what your doctor says, and where you were before you got pregnant.  As for tracking what kind of weight you are gaining, the only way to know is if you are watching your body fat, and as far as I know, thats not super reliable becuase of the pregnancy.  I think we 100% need to stay on track and help keep each other healthy, and thats what this thread is for.

  • @littlebug2010 thanks for the advice. i'm not comparing but gaining insight which is different. If people want to share in their experience they can. For example, some women don't get nauseous or sick during pregnancy and some do. Some don't throw up and some do. And comparing whether you get sick or not is not beneficial nor indicative of a healthy or not healthy pregnancy. But for those that do, ie. me in this example, they want to know what others are experiencing and what they've read to be normal in pregnancy or what they'd heard about handling sickness. Same with weight loss or gain. For those gaining weight, I was interested in their perspective, insight and experience, some advice, etc at this stage in the pregnancy. Also how it related if at all, to their morning sickness. DId they also lose weight the first trimester and now are they gaining it back faster or slower, or steadily. You don't need to reply to it. Others do not need to reply to it. But you stated your opinion and the question is out there for anyone that would like to share. I heard all the answers of contacting you OB/MW. If anyone wants to share anything else on the matter, feel free. Like one person shared a study that I found interesting. So I'm going to keep the topic out there for my own support and in case anyone was also interested.

  • sometimes it's just connecting with other women experiencing the same things you are. I originally walked into the doctor's office and when they weighed me I was 10lbs under my start weight from the first appointment. Can you imagine my shock at ~16 weeks thinking that I lost 10lbs? Where did my baby go? Is it still in there? I know I should have gained some weight at this point. I have a little body in there, a placenta, more blood. I mentioned it was incorrect and they reweighed me and I was actually up from my last appointment. I felt relief. My pants are more snug, I can't fit into my same dresses. I lost weight and now I've gained, but did I gain pretty quickly? Am I actually not doing too bad. I finally have my appetite back; am I overeating now? Anyone else feeling the same?

  • Hello,

    how far along: 17 weeks

Work out this week & goals:
this week I ran 3 miles Sunday, looking to run 3X per week until I'm toasted. Keep it light, 3-4 miles. I ran half marathons in both my previous pregnancies but I am PGAL with this one and being more cautious. My babies health is always my #1. I'm runnning to stay in decent shape for birth. I did the NYC Marathon 3.5 months ago so my fitness level now is a far cry from then, but I'm hoping it's good enough for birth.

What are tour exercises now? Just running, it's my hobby and relieves stress big time for me.

Healhty Eating Goals: Eat really healthy 1-2 days per week, rest just play by ear. I did this with my first two and it worked out pretty good.

Favorite Fitness blogs? I follow a few running blogs. Run like a mother. It's pretty interesting but aside from that just runners world articles I come across. One thing I love about running is its a
hobby I can still enjoy even pregnant- unlike drinking /wine which I really miss. Soon enough though, August we can all
    have some maragaritas :-).
  • @oriole2017 I definitely feel you on not being able to do the same exercise as before. This has been a major motivator for me to be more consistent. Before I was preggo, if I skipped a day to go to HH, then I just did a harder workout the next day, but since I can walk no faster than 2.8-3.2 on the treadmill, that isn't much of an option. Also, my hips start to protest when I walk to long/far. So consistency is all I have. :)

I can't find the article. I have read so much stuff and didn't really save any of it.  This is my approach to my weight which I based on that study: I was 12 lbs overweight (BMI =27) when I got pregnant. I asked my doctor what my weight gain goal for pregnancy was given my BMI = 27. Major motivation for this is that I am hoping to have a vaginal delivery and being over your goal increases your risk for c-section. Her answer = 20lbs. This is slightly below the typical 25-35lb for someone who is normal weight. The third trimester is the time when the baby's weight is really picking up speed, so I am giving myself the full 10-12 lbs for that trimester, which means for me, that I am trying to stay around 8-10lbs for the first 2. Sounds nuts, but if you add in the 12 lbs extra I had to start with, it will be 32lbs at the end which is normal. I only weight myself once a month, but at week 19, I am up about 2lbs. Complicated yes, but I wanted to at least know what my goal was so that I could remind myself what my end goal is - healthy baby, healthy mamma.

Just a note about my note. Please don't anyone compare their weight or goals to mine. This is more just to explain my thinking. My body is in a very weird place right now, and I am just trying to do what I can for it. If you are worried about your weight, whether high or low, talk to your OB/midwife. Mine was very practical and reassuring.
  • @oriole2017 I personally hate those weight gain guidelines about how much you should gain each week, etc.  Everyone gains differently and people's bodies react differently to pregnancy.  If you're outside of those guidelines with weight gain, it can cause unnecessary stress and may not be any indication of your/your baby's health or how you bounce back after pregnancy.

It hasn't been easy, but I've pretty much accepted that my body is going to gain what it wants during pregnancy.  I started out my first pregnancy at my heaviest.  One of the doctors in my practice recommended I only gain 10-15 lbs.  I had morning sickness throughout the first trimester, but still managed to gain about 10 lbs because the only thing I could tolerate was carbs.  I ended up gaining 45 lbs at least half of which I gained in the third trimester.  I had severe swelling and at one point gained 15 lbs in 4 weeks.  It wasn't from overeating.  I just continued to retain water.  I ended up losing it all by 6-8 weeks PP.

I started out my second pregnancy 25 lbs lighter and within the normal range for my height.  I was nauseous, but it was fairly mild during the first trimester.  I was more active and ate healthier this time around.  In the third trimester, I had glucose intolerance and was on the GD diet.  It was treated the same as GD although it never developed into GD.  The weight I gained while on the GD diet was on the higher end of the recommended weight gain.  Even with all of that, I again gained 45 lbs.  That time, I did struggle to lose the last 20-25 lbs.

This time, I started out 10 lbs lighter than my second pregnancy.  I was hoping to not gain as much, but it looks like I'm on track for a similar weight gain.  I didn't get sick every day like I did for weeks with my first pregnancy, but the nausea was pretty bad.  The only thing that helped me function was carbs.  Between the excessive carbs and lack of exercise during the first trimester, my weight has gone up quite a bit.  Now that the nausea is gone and my energy is back, I'm trying to exercise and eat better.  I'm still gaining weight though.  It's frustrating because I was in the best shape I had been in years, but my body seems to gain more than the average during pregnancy even with healthy eating and exercise.

  • How far along are you?
    15+3

How many times did you workout last week and what's your goal for this week?
I worked out 4 times last week and plan to exercise at least 5 times this week.

What exercises are you doing now?
I'm doing 21 day fix and adding running in again when I can.

What are you healthy eating goals?
To not reach for unhealthy snacks at night and to eat balanced meals now that my nausea is gone.  Weekends are always tough if we go out to eat or order in, but I'm trying to make healthy choices.

    GTKY: What's your favorite health/fitness blog/website?
I don't really read any blogs, but I have been part of a health/fitness group on FB since before I got pregnant, which helps motivate me.

How far along are you? 16+2

How many times did you workout last week and what's your goal for this week? I can't even remember how many times I worked out last week. I think 3? Goal for this week is 3-4x

What exercises are you doing now? prenatal yoga, walking, running (although these last two give me a lot of sciatic pain) - trying to work in some other prenatal exercise videos pre or post walk/run. I agree with others that these are not intense enough but I like learning the options for moves and will just try to up the intensity a little bit more so that I actually feel like I'm keeping my HR elevated (while still being able to carry on a conversation per my OB's guidance)

What are you healthy eating goals? Finally have my appetite back. I want to get back into buying from the farmer's market and eating salads for lunch. I'm picky with my fruits and vegetables and tend to eat what's fresh in my salads, which hasn't been too much over the winter.

GTKY: What's your favorite health/fitness blog/website? A bit old school but I like flipping through Women's Health and Shape, etc. for factoids and healthy recipe ideas. Usually it will prompt me to do some research of my own.

@oriole2017 I see both sides of the coin with responses to your question from having read people's responses to similar questions (i.e. the July thread that PP shared). To answer your question in the true spirit of how you meant it (which I think is perfectly legitimate): I also started out my pregnancy on the muscular side. I'm shorter but at the very top of the "normal BMI" range for this reason. At my first appointment, the doctor said my goal to gain would be 15-20 lbs, which is below the normal 25-35. I lost weight in the first trimester due to nausea and a decreased appetite, but no MS. My doctor was concerned enough to ask at my last appointment, and we discussed that I'd likely lost some muscle due to a lot less working out than normal and that I'm usually a big foodie and since becoming pregnant, had basically only eaten to the point of being full which is probably less than usual. What I thought of after the fact is that cutting out calories from a nightly glass of wine or two is probably also contributing. I have another appointment Friday and am interested to discuss with my doctor. I do agree that I'm interested in trying to keep on track between appointments because every 4 weeks is a long time to go between getting the doctor's advice, especially if you've already been losing weight. Should I be gaining faster now since I was down before? Or stay on track with the normal prescribed gain if possible? These are questions I'm planning to ask my doctor.

  • How far along are you?
    19 weeks today!

How many times did you workout last week and what's your goal for this week?
I don't have any formal workouts, just trying to stay active throughout the day

What exercises are you doing now?
Walking and swimming when I can. I am plus size, but I want to remain active because studies show that women who stay active during their pregnancies tend to have healthier pregnancies along with smoother L&D. My blood pressure always spikes at the end of my pregnancy and I am trying to prevent that this time around.

I just got a fit bit and it has helped me to stay active throughout the day because it reminds me to get up and move each hour. I appreciate the reminder and my daily steps have increased since I purchased it!

What are you healthy eating goals?
Making clean and healthy choices and only choosing a sweet treat 1-2 times per week. I am obsessing over some fruit cobbler

    GTKY: What's your favorite health/fitness blog/website?
Any time I google something, I always end up on the Livestrong website so apparently that's a good one.
  • How far along are you? 19 today

How many times did you workout last week and what's your goal for this week? Last week doesn't count because we went on vacation. This week doesn't count because we got back from vacation (lol). I plan to work out 3 days (yesterday, today, and Friday), then start fresh with 4 workout days next week.

What exercises are you doing now? I do 20 minutes of cardio and then a variety of weights- some free weights, some machine.

What are you healthy eating goals? Indulge in something unhealthy no more than once a day.

GTKY: What's your favorite health/fitness blog/website? I don't have one. So many websites just suck. I even tried Fit Pregnancy this morning and kept getting redirected from one slideshow to another. WTF? Just write a damn article with some pictures of the movement.
Oh, I follow Runner's World on Facebook and they post some helpful stuff sometimes. Mostly I do what I remember learning from the personal trainer I had a few years back.

  • @kvh22 How are you losing weight? I'm trying to count my calories and make healthier choices but continue to pack on the pounds.
  • @DeansGirl14 do you just peruse the runners world site for good articles? I'm going to google the article, love their stuff.

@clrgrdfrk how is "Run Fast Eat Slow"? I follow Shalane on Insta and have been tempted to buy the book, some tasty recipes it looks like.

Also-  I forgot to post earlier. "Mom's Run This Town" is a Mom running group, national wide, and it's available on FB groups for each county /state if there is one by you. I'm in NJ and I love it. Winter is snowy and cold here, so it's really awesome and motivating to have a 500+ group of moms to run with all located in your county in/or by your town. It's also good for working out while pregnant advice from wardrobe to training to even just having another prego for company. Thought I'd chime in, you don't have to be a mom either (if you're a FTM) or just don't have kids. Anyways, thought I'd suggest. It's helped me tremendously and a great way to meet other local moms who stay fit too!
