GTKY: Mardi Gras edition (splurge/indulgence)

Mardi Gras is about indulgence before a fast, What are some things you splurge on? beauty products? shoes? clothes? food?

Big or small what is something you have to have?

  • DH and I stick to a fairly strict diet. So when I splurge it is usually food.  All the food I love but can't normally have.

    Married 9/26/15

  • I have been obsessed with Lush lately. I spend way too much on bath bombs and bubble bars. I have a back stock. Problem is I usually take showers so these things just sit in the closet.

I'm with you @hartmich on the shoes and bags. quality makes a difference and I will use them a lot more often

  • @Avrilmai If I had a lush near me, I would totally overstock my closet with all the bath bomb, bubble bars, and bath oils! <3

Usually food is my go-to, though. I have to avoid certain aisles in the grocery store because I'll just buy random food items I'm craving. Usually it's pudding, goldfish crackers, and gummies. For Mardi Gras, however, I bought myself a box of haagen dazs ice cream bars (The ones that are coffee ice cream coated in toffee bits and chocolate). :yum:

  • I love shopping for new clothes and makeup, but surprisingly have a lot of self restraint when it comes to that.

Food and books are my weakness. Historical fiction/non-fiction for books. Fast food and ice cream for food. Nothing brightens my day like Taco Bell or Wendy's. I also love fruit snacks, like Gushers. And candy. And string cheese. And all food, if I'm being honest. I love to eat, whether it's fine dining or absolute junk.

  • o0o hmm probably food. We love to eat out at new, trendy restaurants.

Also, skincare. I decided about a year ago that my skin is really important to me and im darn spending the money to make sure I look good later in life haha. Also with @hartmich on the shoes ;) I just got a killer deal on some heels b/c Macy's near me is going out of business woooo win!

  • I'm definitely an expensive shoes and purse person.  Any Chloe bag that's made is something that I need to have in my closet immediately.  This one is my latest gift from the DH and I'm obsessed
  • Clothes. Just...all the clothes. Our closet (which is pretty big) is 95% Duchess and 5% Mr. Duchess. Mr. Duchess does not approve but at the same time likes my style and that I look nice a lot (my friends joke that I don't know what casual outfits are). I do buy a lot of clothes but I rarely buy expensive ones. Or, if they are expensive, they are heavily discounted. I know I'm going to buy clothes no matter what so I have a monthly budget I try to stick to. Sometimes, instead of buying a lot of cheaper clothes (J crew factory/Loft sale stuff), I'll splurge on a really nice but more expensive item that I consider timeless like from Reiss or Ralph Lauren. I'm OBSESSED with Reiss dresses.

  • Most of my impulse buys come from Ulta or Sephora, although my money tends to go to hair and skin care products more than makeup. I also like nice handbags but don't own a ton of them at any given time because I just don't have the closet space...When I was teaching I spent far too much of my own money on classroom extras and supplies. Oh, and books. All of the books, please.

  • I like splurging on clothes (and especially purses), but since I work from home now it's not quite as much fun. I guess the thing I most have to have is books. I'm a really voracious reader and re-read books all the time so buying the good ones is an absolute must-have. Thank goodness DH is also a huge bookworm - he has no room to talk. :)
  • Going out to eat. DH and I recently started giving ourselves "fun money" each month and I realized I use most of my "fun money" for eating out with friends. What can I say? NYC is full of good food, and cocktails here aren't cheap. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@GG620 I would really like to get more into skincare but I'm completely flummoxed by all the various creams, cleansers, etc. How do you even learn what to use and what's best? At this point I'm just a cleanser and moisturizer gal.
  • Usually food because you don't get a figure like mine by eating salad  :D but lately Ive been splurging on Posh and LipSense along with all the LuLaRoe I buy all the time anyway lol

  • @magnolia131 @libgirl1981 I don't read nearly as much as I used to, but I used to buy all the books I could afford. I am thankful for my dad bringing me to a Half Price Books store one day so I could afford more books for my budget. :D

The one thing no one told me when I started it was that using beeswax products (like Burts Bees) will keep it from adhereing to your lips properly. And it will tingle like an sob lol but I love it for its longevity! This was before drinks, a steak dinner, dessert, more drinks and a show but it was still PERFECT when I got home that night (I was just too drunk to take pics lmao!)

  • I am super agnostic so lent never really applies to me, but I am using it as an excuse to help me cut down the wine without having people ask questions awkwardly, so tonight, wine!!!
  • @mschanandlerbong1214 thanks for the heads up about the Burts Bees! I am excited to try it out. I rarely wear lipstick b/c it wears off so quickly it seems pointless.

  • @GG620 what kind of skincare products do you use? I've recently decided the same but don't know where to start!

    @mschanandlerbong1214 oh what's posh??

Im not cheap, I just don't know what to spend my money on! I'm plain with a lot-black/dark colored clothes.  My hair doesn't do anything but I am lucky and get compliments on how nice and shiney it is. So hair-wise I don't need much. Makeup I just use liner during the week but I have some urban decay eye shadow and drug store mascara for the weekends. No lipstick, just not my thing.

I will splurge on a bunch of random shit I don't need from Amazon if that counts!
  • I'm bad.  I splurge all the time.  I really need to stop lol.  But my biggest problem is Lilly Pulitzer!! I do have to say that I wait for the items to go on sale or buy off trade sites.  I also splurge on food a lot.  And running things like races & running clothes (I have a bad tradition that I have to wear a new outfit for every race.  And I run lots of races)
  • Chocolate!!!  I splurge on Deep Dark Real Chocolate.    Other things would be fabric and gardening supplies.
  • @50Wife it's skin care stuff. Perfectly Posh is the proper name. It's face stuff, lotions, scrubs, soaps, lip balms, you name it! It's all natural and smells amaze balls.

I NEED to start putting a little more money into my skincare regime though. Any suggestions for acne prone skin? Also wrinkles  :'( what a cruel cruel joke to have both at the same time!

    @Bababatty @50wife oooo I love talking skincare!

@Bababatty I learned a lot honestly from trial and error. If you are just starting out I recommend only trying trial sizes of products for a few weeks first to see how your skin reacts. For bare bones beginning, I recommend a cleanser, toner, and moisturizer that you use morning and night, then depending on your skin, a detox mask OR a heavier moisturizer/oil that you use about twice a week.

I love caudalie. All of their products are absolutely amazing and they have some great introduction trial sets. I recommend this one for the best all around set and beginning:

    https://us.caudalie.com/exclusives/gift-ideas-special-offers/gifts-sets-and-limited-editions/caudalie-favorites-set-1.html

The micellar water is the best make up remover ever, plus an amazing toner! So it's two in one and awesome

I also highly recommend dermalogica's ultra calming cleanser for all skin types. I keep it in the shower and use it every morning.

My usual regimen looks like this:
Morning = dermalogica ultra calming cleanser, caudalie micellar water, caudalie premier Cru eye cream, 3 drops of caudalie Cru elixir oil, caudalie cream sorbet on my face and neck and then spray of caudalie's beauty elixir when I'm about to put makeup on or need freshening or moisture through the day
Evening=caudalie, micellar water, caudalie eye cream, and caudalie heavier moisturizer

Then once a week (or two if it seems oily) I use caudalie's detox mask, which is a clay that dries and minimizes pores. I also have a thicker caudalie moisturizer I only use when my skin seems more dry. I've also tried Aveda, Burt's bees, etc. So feel free to ask me

If interested, I use coconut oil in my hair and whole body, but it made my face break out. I also mix fresh coffee grounds and sugar with almond oil and it's a homemade exfoliating scrub for when I need it. You don't want to exfoliate too often.

    PM me any questions ladies!!!

  • @GG620 You are amazing!! This is fantastic info, thank you so much! I've got some micellar water and I wasn't sure what to do with it, like should I use it with the cleanser or on its own? But it sounds like you use it both ways, so that helps. I hope you'll be my skincare guru. I'll definitely have lots of questions to PM you!  :D

  • Add me to the list of Lulalovers :) I think that my other splurge is nails - I go every 3 weeks to get a gel manicure.
  • I'm not big on splurging, usually because all I can think about is how big of a dent that money could make in my student loans.

However, if I do splurge, it's usually food, skincare, or yarn.

I'm always up for good, high quality food.  If it's going into my body, I'd prefer that it be at least reasonably decent for me, though splurging on a vice food is always good too.

I have to live with my face for life.  I don't wear a lot of makeup, so I don't buy a lot.  I'm big on high quality skincare products though.  Lately, my favorite thing is the Yuzen box.  It's a quarterly subscription box that's really reasonably priced, and is all about high quality, eco-friendly, often local products.  I have loved every box I've gotten from them.

I knit and crochet and high quality yarns are my biggest weakness.  I have way more yarn than any one person should, but I just cannot resist.
  • @SoraLk I also love Lucky Charms. Around St Patricks Day I like to get the special edition green kind!
  • I'm not sure how I missed this thread but I love it because it makes me feel better about my bad spending habits/splurges lol.

I'm kind of all over the board. I tend to spend a lot on my hair and makeup regularly but I typically go cheap on shoes/clothing unless there is something in particular I really want. I have shamelessly been wanting a Louie Vuitton handbag forever now and my H said I can buy it with our tax return money  :D  Even though it's stupid expensive I have used the same purse for over 3 years now. I know it will get good use and the quality will hold up forever!

@BreezyBee That purse is superrr cute!
  • Love the Ducktails GIF.

Perfectly Posh, love that stuff, but it's expensive and haven't on pay $ for shipping.

  • I buy too much makeup, hair, skin, and nail stuff that I don't have time or energy to use! I do use the 10 different types of shampoos and conditioners based on my hair's current state. It changes so easily with the weather and temps! My twin loves coming over and using it a few times a year.
It's funny how it's the little things in life that mean the most...not where you live, or what you drive, or the price tag on your clothes... There's no dollar sign on a piece of mind, this I've come to know! *ZBB*
