Re: Weekly Randoms 2/27

  • My husband's mother died in the early hours this morning.  I have no idea what happened.  She was up on FB last night commenting on our wedding anniversary stuff at 11 and then he got a call about 4 this morning that she'd passed away.  My husband is upset but is with his brothers and sister right now trying to sort things out.

Ladies the only funerals I've been to in my adult life are military funerals and we wear our uniform to those.  What is the proper attire?  Do people still wear all black?  I need to go find something to wear after I get off work today.  Could I wear a black dress with some kind of  a sweater over it in a color?

  • We have full school weeks until Spring break in late April now. Boo. March is such a long month.

Has anyone done the whole raspberry leaf tea thing?  When did you start drinking it/do you think that it worked or is it all just luck of the draw?
  • I'm currently babysitting 8 week old twins! If I wasn't already knocked up I would demand it from DH haha It's making June seem so far away! I was a little nervous about it but they have been fine so far. Their mom has mastitis and needed a break this morning! Apparently that's when your boobs hurt like hell and you have flu symptoms. But after being here I'm not as worried about taking Chloe with me when I babysit after she is born. The girls will be 1 and 2.5 by then. Should be easy! Also, one of the twins has a hernia and the other spits up out of his nose. Both were a little shocking to see for the first time!

  • @Wearmi1 I'm so incredibly sorry for your loss.  My MIL passed in July out of nowhere and it's been a tough road since.  As for the attire, most still wear dark colors, navy, gray, black, dark purple, etc.  I think as long as you don't show up in the brightest dress ever, you'll be okay with some subdued color.  I find most really aren't up for critiquing at a funeral, or at least I never am.  Again, I'm so sorry.  If you need anything, esp when it comes to how your DH is handling it, please feel free to reach out.  All my love.
  • @Wearmi1 I'm so sorry to hear about your MIL.  My condolences to you and your DH.

In terms of attire, I usually wear darker tones at funerals, but not exclusively black.  I definitely play to more of the somber tones (nothing too vibrant).
  • Would y'all indulge me and participate in my name poll? DH and I came up with this one last night and usually you can just have a general idea of public consensus on a name but I have never seen anyone with this one so I am hoping to get a gauge on it. Thanks, ladies!

  • @ WearMi1 I'm so sorry to hear that. I just went to my DF'a grandfather's funeral last week and everyone was is in mostly dark attire. I wore a black shirt dress with white polka dots on it with black tights and boots.
  • @Wearmi1 I'm so sorry for your loss.  Was she sick at all?  Your husband must be struggling with processing this.  It's good he can be with his siblings.

@LMMama we have 7 weeks (7 FULL weeks, minus 1 professional development day), plus the ELA round of state testing within that time frame.  And we are going to Disney in April so the next 7 weeks are going to DRAG.

  • @Wearmi1 I am so sorry!! That's aweful! I just lost my MIL in January after a short illness.

attire: I don't think it has to be black but darker colors. I did "business casual" for the viewing and a dress for the funeral.

My my thoughts are with you!!
  • @Wearmi1 I am so sorry for your loss. I agree with anything non-vibrant being just fine.

@LMMama I didn't use it myself but I have heard that it helps as you get toward the end so maybe start drinking it in the last 4 weeks or so. I have also heard that it is important to get RED raspberry leaf as opposed to just raspberry leaf because supposedly there is a distinction between the two.

  • @Wearmi1 so sorry for your loss. As far as attire, the last funeral I went to I wore gray dress pants with a black top. A lot of people did wear black but there were also other dark colors like others have said.

  • The last few days I've noticed that I have some 'peach fuzz' on my face. Luckily my body hair is predominantly blonde and I doubt anyone else will notice this! Is anyone else getting hairy?

  • @Wearmi1so sorry, my thoughts are with your family.

I agree what PP said, stick to darker colors.
  • @Wearmi1 I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm glad your husband is able to be with his siblings today. I agree with otters about funeral attire: all black isn't necessary, just no overly bright colors or showy clothes. I usually wear grey or navy.
  • @Wearmi1 I am sorry for your loss. Thinking of you, your husband, and your husband's family during this time.

  • @Wearmi1 I am so incredibly sorry for you and your husband's loss.  I'm glad he can be with his siblings and that they can be a good support source for each other..

@FSUNole31 good luck and sending all the positive vibes your way!
  • @FSUNole31, that sounds amazing! Good luck!
  • @Wearmi1 so very sorry for your loss. I choose darker colors like grey for funerals/wakes. When it's family I tend to wear black. Don't let the clothes part stress you out, dark or black is fine and the important part is that you take care of yourself and DH during this time. Hugs
  • @Wearmi1, I am so very sorry for your loss.  We lost my brother unexpectedly nearly two years ago, and I know what a shock it can be.  Stick with dark colors, you'll be fine.  HUGE hugs to you guys.

  • Not too much going on here...more stuff going on with EM, but overall things are moving along.  I'm supposed to find out in the next few days whether I got the job for a new role I applied to (same company, just a different group).  I also applied for another job (still same company) last week, so we'll see.  I really need a new position, as this one is driving me insane.

Less than 3 weeks until we visit our EM!

  • @FSUNole31Good luck! As someone who has been working from home for almost a year now, I can say it is absolutely amazing

@krex Have you met EM yet? What will your meeting with her entail?
  • @MKRLTX, we haven't met yet (though we talk on the phone and text regularly).  We're going down later in March to see her...the meeting will probably be lunch somewhere, getting to talk and hang out, then a hospital tour of where she'll give birth.  Pretty simple, but I also don't want to overwhelm her with all the "crazy" that is me.

  • @krex That is so exciting!! Sorry if you have answered this before, but was this all set up through an agency? How long had you been waiting? You absolutely don't have to answer these or go into details if you aren't comfortable with it! Adoption and the whole process just fascinates me and I think it's so cool that you're getting to know her as well throughout the pregnancy.
  • @Wearmi1 I'm so sorry for your loss.

    @krex that is so exciting!!

Nothing big going on with me. Watching trolls while sitting in pick up line for DD1 then taking both girls to go say goodbye to one of their best friends. They are moving to Virginia tomorrow. Such is military life but it's so hard to explain to them how they might not see each other again.

Mom to Madison- 5 and Lillian 2....and now surprise baby #3!
  • @Wearmi1 so sorry for your loss. I echo what the ladies have said- darker colors, business casual for the wake, dress for the funeral
  • So sorry for your loss @Wearmi1

I'm unfortunately in a somewhat similar situation - my grandmother passed away yesterday (not unexpected, but sooner than we thought it would be). I'm supposed to be away for relatively important work meetings, and my parents are telling me I should go anyways (with the logic of "pregnant women don't go to funerals" in our religion). Add in that DH gave me his wretched cough / cold and I can't think clearly enough to decide. I need to set myself a deadline.

    @Wearmi1so sorry for your loss.

@LMMama I haven't taken Red raspberry tea leaf before but I plan to this time.  I think I'll wait until 37 weeks to take it.  I plan to do the pill form and not tea because I don't like tea and don't think I can choke it down.  I also plan on taking evening primrose oil later third trimester.  I did take that with my last pregnancy and I dilated to a 6 without contractions so I think it helped!

Edit- after quick research I might start RRLT closer to 32 weeks.
  • @Wearmi1 I'm very sorry for your loss. My great aunt passed away in January. I wore a black dress with a dark but flowery scarf. My thoughts are with you and your DH.

PSA: I'm not sure if others have found this or talked about it, but if you have Amazon Prime my husband and I found out that Amazon Music has the best lullaby music for free with no commercials. You can search Rockabye Baby and they have so many popular songs in lullaby form - Beatles, Adele, Aerosmith, Lez Zepplin, etc. It's adorable and we will definitely be using it for baby. Most songs are free.  :)

  • I'm so sorry for your family's loss @Wearmi1. I'll be keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers.
  • This may make me crazy but I just hired a cleaning company to come clean my house since my MIL got the worst stomach bug ever right after arriving here Saturday.  They were quarantined in the downstairs living/bedroom and bathroom and I'm too afraid to go down there and clean.  But my mom and aunt are coming Wednesday so everything needs to be cleaned and washed.  I don't want to take any chances of us getting sick! I know we've all probably all been exposed from just being around her but the stomach flu can live on surfaces for 2 weeks.  And TMI but she had lots of accidents in the bathroom while here.  Poor thing.  So it needs deep cleaned and sanitized.

@JessyKV that's what I was thinking timeline wise. I saw some people who started taking it around the beginning of second tri and was wondering if I missed the boat to actually see any effects. I'm thinking I'll start it around 32 weeks as well.

When did you start the evening primrose oil? I used to take that as a supplement at some point in life when I wasn't pregnant.
  • @JessyKV I hope you avoid the sickies!  I don't blame you in hiring the cleaning company.  We all had the stomach bug at my house last month (preschool germs) and it was AWFUL.
