Re: February Randoms

  • Quick question: any of you or STM started feeding LO food yet? If so what and when? X will be 6 months next week and he is definitely showing interest when we eat. FTM and not sure how to start/introduce when we do start giving him food.

  • Our pediatrician sent us some links on starting solids so we can read up before his next appointment. I thought the articles were pretty helpful. If you want to check them out, here they are:

  • FTM here as well. We went for it this weekend as our little girl seemed really ready. She will be 6 months at the end of the month.

We just tried the rice cereal, I chose the one you mix with breastmilk. I nursed her first and then we tried the cereal. They have instructions on the box for first feed that is very thin.

It was hilarious! I'm not sure how much she actually ate, most of it went down her chin. But she was super eager to try it and had fun. We will try again and hopefully she will keep improving at the whole swallowing from a spoon thing.
  • Our pediatrician gave us the green light at 4 months although he wasn't ready. He was very confused by the spoon and swallowing. We tried again at 5 months and he's been really into it. My pediatrician also advised against rice cereal and said she prefers baby oatmeal because there is arsenic in rice. Maybe the organic brands don't contain contain arsenic but I would look into it or talk to your pediatrician.

So far he's had avocado, banana, butternut squash, sweet potato, and pear. The avocado and banana I just mashed up really good myself. The others I bought pouches from Whole Foods/Target. The pouches also have levels listed. Level 1 is usually for 4+ months. I know certain vegetables and fruits are easier on the stomach so those are better to start with.

My pediatrician also told us to do one food for three days in a row, so if there are any allergic reactions you'll know which food is causing it.

So far he gets very little. I feed him solids once a day and he gets approx 1.5 ounces. I always give him milk first so that he's not drinking any less milk.
  • We've always started with avocado. Like previous post, tiny bits of solids at first. It's just for fun before age 1, so not a huge part of their nutrition. We've always skipped rice cereal/oatmeal. We haven't started solids yet with this little one.
  • My parents visited over a week ago and I STILL feel like I'm off kilter. Still catching up on laundry, meal planning somehow went out the window. Grocery shipping turned into getting random crap that won't make a meal... Not sure how one visit threw off my routine so much!
  • Any give or plan on giving there LOs water. I came across an article that states it can be given between 4-6 months (when solids have started and if your baby drinks 32oz of breastmilk/formula)

I didn't think water happened until much later. And how are we supposed to know the difference between hungry and thirsty?
  • Pretty sure we waited until after 6mo with our previous two on the water thing. Formula/breastmilk will quench thirst and its not like they're getting full meals of solids that need to be washed down :)
  • Unless bath water counts then we will probably wait until he is a bit older. He loves to put his hands in the water and then suck on them.
  • Dylan will be 5 months in a few days and we started solids about 2 weeks ago. At our 4 month appointment our Dr. Said really any time after 4 months was fine...all kids are different and will be ready at different times. Dylan for a few weeks before We started was very interested in eating and would open his mouth up when We held a spoon near his mouth. We started with oatmeal and gave him it once a night mixed with breatmilk. Yesterday we gave him his first veggie and he loved it. We gave him carrots (it's what I had on hand) I just steamed them and blended them in our ninja with some extra liquid to make it thinner.

  • Anyone use a waist trainer that they love. I'm looking into purchasing one.
  • I have one of those Belly Bandit things. Does that count as a waist trainer or are you thinking of something more like a corset?

I love my belly bandit. It's uncomfortable and super noticible under clothes, but I feel like helped get my stomach pulled back in after baby. Not to sound totally conceited, but my stomach looks pretty good right now. I guess that could be completely unrelated to the belly bandit and more related to breastfeeding though. Who knows!
  • @Laraeq I have one of those too, but unfortunately I was not good about wearing it after the baby. I read somewhere that they are only useful for wearing right after birth. I'm nearing 6 months postpartum so I think the ship has sailed to start wearing it. I was thinking more of a corset type thing.
  • Anyone still having postpartum hair loss? My hair is still coming out in clumps. I'm a FTM so I have no idea when it ends, but I literally cannot wait!
  • Yes I am. I brush it before shower get a bunch, more while in shower, and then more when I comb it after. I swear it is a miracle I have hair lol. Been like this for almost two months.
  • I don't know how I'm not bald either. Started at 10wks postpartum. My hair is so thin and gross. I need to get it cut but I'm embarrassed how much is falling out!!
  • I think the shedding has stopped but it is noticably thinner, especially around the hairline. I did just go get it cut and layered and even my hairdresser couldn't believe how much I had lost...But the last time I saw her I had glorious pregnancy hair!

    Ummm...STM's, does it grow back?!?
  • I still have PP hair loss, but it might just be regular hair loss since I was always a super shedder. It seems more loss than it was pre-pregnancy, though!

Well this is a fun new stage. LO was clingy as babies will be but this week has been ridiculous! Any time I put her down or she is not still touching me in some way she screams. Not the annoyed complaining sort of cry but the top of her lungs full on screaming and doesn't stop until I pick her back up.  She used to be able to play in her little gym or jumper but not these past few days unless I am practically sitting in it holding her. Super fun. Anyone else?!?
  • @jellybiehn - I heard around 6 mo they start learning object permanence and can struggle with accepting that you aren't with them ALL THE TIME. I know DS is starting to get pissed off when we are in a different room than he is unless he is really distracted with something (i.e. his favorite train toy). Hopefully your girl is able to play independently a little bit more soon!
  • Dylan is starting to get like that too, I find it so hard to get things done. At least he is not as bad as I was when I was a baby-my mom if she was around she had to be holding me or I would scream..and I wouldn't let anyone else hold me if she was there including my dad! Yikes....I hope he never gets that bad

  • @jellybiehn yes! My lo is also a lil fussier and seems restless more frequently. Have you heard of the wonderweeks? It's an app and book which discusses each developmental leap. I think many of our LOs are going through leap 5 which is known as the "world of relationships". I tried to upload a little snippet of the leap 5 summary which pertains to you, but the upload is failing. I'll try to do it in a separate post.

  • Yes! Hair grows back but it basically starts all over. So takes forever to catch up to the old stuff.
Also separation anxiety over here too. LO thankfully can be soothed by dad or sister, but if I walk out of the room it's like I'm never coming back!
  • I went 9 hrs without pumping or nursing. Ouch! Those who are breastfeeding, are you getting up and pumping when your LO sleeps? I'd like to drop my middle of the night pump and sleep if my LO is sleeping. Yesterday I did 6.5hrs and that was ok. 9 was not.
  • Lol. Weird...My alarm didn't go off and I was feeling the same way this morning! I do still get up every night at 1am to pump, but only because she nurses every 2.5 hours during the day and it is the only way I can get a supply of milk for her larger bedtime bottle feed.

I'm hoping when she starts taking more solids I may be able to pump a little during the day and eventually stop getting up. For now I just try to enjoy the peace and quiet I get all to myself at that time..
  • You girls who have LOs who sleep through the night are so lucky. He still gets up once usually about 6hrs after his bedtime bottle so I don't have to pump in the middle of the night. He usually only nurses off of one side for 15-20 mins and refuses other side. So that side is a bit engorged but not painful when I wake up for work. I pump first thing in the morning before work.
  • @jenkar01 Mine typically gets up once per night so I normally don't have this issue. The last few nights his sleep pattern changed. He wakes up only a few hours after we put him down (usually we are just getting into bed), but then will sleep through until 6:30/7am.

I have a horrible fear of getting mastitis, so I guess I'll be setting my alarm just in case. If he continues to sleep through the night, I'll look into how to drop a pump.
  • Yeah I'm usually up twice feeding LO each night. Sometimes it's just once, but she rarely sleeps thru the night
  • You ladies are lucky! I am feeding about 3 times a night lately. Since I have been back to work about a month ago, my baby has been postesting by not eating. During the day he will eat 2 - 7 oz. total all day and then wants to feed all night. I know we're probably reinforcing this bad behavior/habit by letting him nurse a bunch at night but I also don't want to starve him.

  • Ellie started waking up more at night when I went back to work too. Every 2 hours...But still eating plenty during the day too. She is finally starting to sleep 3 hour stretches again. I read that it can be better because you know they are getting plenty of milk and that connection with you, but if you aren't cosleeping that's exhausting!
