@danijo I actually packed separate bags for labor and recovery last time, and I thought it made it easier. That way dh didn't have to hunt through all my stuff for recovery to find what i wanted in labor and make my bag all messy. It was also less to bring up to l&d when we got to the hospital. Dh ran down for my suitcase and boppy pillow once we were settled in the recovery room.

Eta- I don't see the point of a seperate baby bag though. I just threw one or two newborn outfits and a blanket for going home in my recovery bag. I don't know what else you would even put in a bag for the baby.

  • @ellie111227 I have no experience so its good to hear how it can be beneficial to have two bags. You make two bags sound better for organization purposes, but I'd still rather have it all with me in case I packed something in the wrong bag. The parking garage is a decent walk from L&D so I won't want DH leaving if necessary. I can't remember what was on the list for the baby's bag, but I will definitely just be throwing his stuff in with my recovery things.

  • We had 4 bags. Lol I had a labor bag which was pretty small and I never even opened because baby came pretty much as soon as we got in our room. I still recommend bringing a labor bag cause you never know and it was nice to to bring one little bag in. Then I had my bag of stuff, dh bag of stuff (we were there for 3 days and he never left) and I brought my diaper bag which I always use as a purse too, so it was basically just my purse and a couple onesies, going home outfit, baby nail clippers and camera.

We attended a maternity center tour at our hospital over the weekend. I was really irritated when they gave us paperwork and in there they had a list of what to pack in your labor bag, your postpartum bag and your baby bag and to leave the second two in the car during labor. WHY would a pregnant lady want to pack and remember three separate bags? During the actual tour they said we can pack it together and bring it all in at once and I had a huge sigh of relief. The paperwork and tour was very helpful though, I would recommend going to one if you are offered.
This is actually exactly what I did! I just thought it made sense and it actually worked very well. DH went out to get the bags from our car after we were settled in a postpartum room. Less stuff to haul around the hospital with us.
  • Well, I'm glad I mentioned it. I've only ever seen lists for hospital bag not bags. In my mind it seemed like such a waste of packing and remembering, but it seems like its probably the way to go since the hospital recommends it and so many of you found it to work well. Thanks!

  • I've only packed one bag for labor, delivery, baby and myself.  I'm not sure you need all that much stuff during labor to have a separate bag.  Or maybe that's just me. If I want anything I want it all in one place so I don't have to think about what bag I put what in.  Plus a lot of things would be needed in both places.  Like camera and Chapstick.  I would bring an extra empty bag to take stuff home in or for dirty stuff but the hospital also provided us with plastic bags to take stuff home in.

I had a nice sized suitcase, so I didn't need any extra bags and there was plenty of room. I think my husband brought the suitcase up once I was in my actual room(I had a scheduled csection).

This pic reminds me that I need to add boppy to my list.

Wow. I feel like "congratulations" is the word in order here. That's impressive!
  • @danijo my hospital with my DD recommended packing separate bags. There main reason was to be prepared for the possible needs/situations. Such a shame an unplanned c section or the Mother being discharged before the baby. Also, to encourage items brought in just for labor like a yoga ball to be removed when it was no longer needed. The maternity floor rooms were tiny so I could see how a pile of labor items would be annoying to keep.

  • One more useful thing, I packed snacks for H and myself. Nothing fancy, but granola bars, crackers, chips, dried fruit, and change for the vending machine. H didn't want to leave my side, so we were glad I packed snacks so he didn't have to go anywhere to get something to eat. I was famished after delivery. It was good to have a quick snack handy so I didn't have to wait for food.

Lol! Thanks. I couldn't be bothered with various bags and everyone kept saying how much stuff our hospital was going to give us to bring home. It wasn't full, but it was easy and I like having everything in one spot.

  • I talked with two friends who have given birth recently at the same hospital I'll be delivering at and asked them these three questions, their responses were SUPER helpful!
    1. What does the hospital provide that I don't need to bring?
    2. What did you bring that you're happy you did?
    3. What did you not bring that you wish you'd had?
