Caffeine?

What's everyone doing about Caffeine? I know they say 1-2 cups of coffee is ok but with my first pregnancy I gave it up completely for the first 16 weeks just out of caution.  I'm finding it much more difficult to give up this time around,  between pregnancy exhaustion,  work and a teething 17 month old. Currently up with her since 3am and have to get ready for work soon..ugh

My doctor says 1 cup a day is completely fine. If you find yourself reaching for a 2nd cup then maybe try a strong tea which still has less caffeine than a cup of coffee. I personally like to sip on green tea. Seriously though 3am wake up? Go get yourself a coffee girlfriend!

  • Oo I Def wouldn't have 2 cups,  I just feel guilty about having 1!
  • @baker1jm2 Ditch the guilt and enjoy your coffee. You deserve it!

  • My doctor said 8oz a day is fine, which I have been drinking. If I want a second I will switch to decaf, but haven't done it so far. 3am is rough!

  • I've stopped drinking my morning tea, more so because I don't find myself enjoying it anymore. But I still have caffeine at some point in the day (chocolate, soft drinks, flavoured coffee). I just make sure I only have 1 of whatever I'm having.
  • Caffeine is linked to low birth weight and placenta thinning, but 1 cup won't hurt. Even that second cup right now won't hurt especially if it's spaced out from the first.  I gave it up with my first daughter, drank 1 cup and occasional half caff lattes with my second, and this time around coffee just doesn't taste right to me so I've been drinking mint tea instead ( which is safe and gives my body the illusion of caffeine even though it's caffeine free)

  • I mix 4 scoops decaf and 1-2 scoops regular now that I've weaned myself down lol. So I can have my 2 "cups" in the morning and still have one in the afternoon if I want one.
  • I'm still drinking my morning coffee but I ditched my lunchtime d. Coke

  • I ordered decaf at my coffee run but cutting out soda pretty much all together unless I suffer a migraine as sipping Dr Pepper with some tylenol can help soften the pain. I went balls to the wall with Sweet Tea the first week of Feb so I am having some severe withdrawals craving wise but doing ok head/migraine wise

  • I cut back from 2 cups to 1 cup of coffee daily. I've been substituting with caffeine free tea if I want to sip on something hot after my 1 cup.

  • This is what I feel most guilty about! I honestly don't think I drink that much caffeine since I had been doing decaf for awhile, but will still sometimes forget to order decaf and that makes me nervous :/
the other day I ordered a grande iced americano and after a few sips realizing it wasn't decaf, I dumped the ice, and saved it and I've been sipping it going on three days now lol. I'm sure it's fine but after two losses, I don't want to mess it up by having caffeine ugggh!

Thanks for starting this thread - it makes me feel better to read that other ladies are also still enjoying either decaf or 1 cup regular caffeine coffee/tea still also :)

Thanks ladies,  made me feel much better about my morning cup of Joe....can't wait to take a nap...or wait I have a toddler, that's not happening
  • I also gave coffee up mostly the first time around but that's just not happening this time! I also have been feeling guilty about it but same as you I limit myself to one cup in the morning. Yesterday I also had a coke in the afternoon but probably won't do that again because I've been beating myself up about that lol anyway, enjoy your coffee! Us toddler moms deserve it :)

  • I've stopped drinking caffeine on the regular and will only have it once in a while if I forget or something. I've been opting for decaf coffee and decaffeinated sodas when I have them. It's easy for me though because I never really developed a need for caffeine  :#

  • Prob TMI but I can't go to the bathroom in the morning without coffee, and nobody wants to deal with a constipated migdala, so I've transitioned to what's basically a morning cup of 2/3 hot soy milk and 1/3 regular coffee.  It's doing the trick bathroom-wise but I keep nodding off at my desk :/
  • baker1jm2 that is me exactly, I gave it up completely first time around.  This time, I'm sticking to 1 cup and then water throughout the day.

canonmom413 I almost had a mint tea yesterday but then stopped and questioned myself.  I remember when I started EOs that peppermint was a no-no when I was pregnantt.  I know the strength in each is totally different, but I hadn't really researched it any further.

I had an unsweet tea with dinner the other night and holy balls batman, did I have insomnia.  Think I will leave the caffeine to my morning cup o' joe.

  • @mrs_fogue actually mint tea is okay.  You just can't go crazy with it. It's better than coffee.

  • I still drink a cup a day. Last pregnancy I had a strong aversion to it so it was easy to cut, but this time I still find myself wanting it. If i'm out i'll order decaf.
  • I was a pot of coffee a day girl when I first found out I was pregnant. I have since switched to decaf, but some days I find myself just feeling sad and off. I know it's an addiction physically and probably a good one to kick. On days when I really need that boost, I either make a really big watered down iced coffee with half coconut milk/half coffee and sip it through the day, have a Diet Coke, or  do a "half caf" ---- I have found that's if I put it off as long as possible in the morning and just wake up and start chugging water, I'm less tempted to go back for a second cup later. It's been hard, though. I know this I should technically one of the "easiest" ways to ensure a healthy pregnancy and just keep reminding myself it's ok to be a little tired right now.

I was drinking a ton of caffeine prior to finding out I was pregnant.. 2 cups of coffee minimum in the morning and 2-3 diet cokes per day. I've scaled back to 1 cup of half caff coffee and 1 diet coke. After the 1st trimester I will drink a little more caffeine. DS never had a problem with caffeine in my breast milk and I think that could partly be attributed to drinking some caffeine while I was pregnant.

  • @miamiumeg I'm the same, I had a cup a day after the first tri and it never bothered DD breast feeding. And thank god bc you need caffeine with a new born!!
  • Used to drink around 24 ounces of Dr Pepper every day but I've quit cold turkey...sometimes I'll ask MH to drink one so I can have a sip because I miss it
  • I gave up smokes and wine. Dear God don't take my coffee. Lol i have scaled it back though. I drink 1 cup in the AM and green tea in the evening. If i have to have a second cup I do like a half calf.
  • 1 cup of tea for me.

Dr. Pepper is my weakness. I'm trying to stay away from all caffeine until at least my first appointment, possibly second trimester. My mom is here visiting from out of state this week, so anytime she gets a Dr. Pepper I have to take a sip (DH hates Dr. Pepper :| )

  • I smoked for a week before realizing I was pregnant this time around. I only started again because I was pissed about the 2 MCs and was like, F it haha. But then I got the BFP and threw all the cigs away

im a big social drinker but obviously don't drink anymore!

i started drinking decaf but work coffee is nasty. If this pregnancy works out I'll buy the Swiss water processed decaf @megggosaurusrex

  • I drank a cup of coffee a day throughout my pregnancy with DS and am planning to do the same this time!

  • I drink 2 cups a day and try to spread it out a little and make sure I drink lots of water. I usually have two in the morning and another cup in the afternoon on most days, so I've cut back a little.

I'm not addicted to coffee, it's addicted to me
