Also, I find it very questionable behavior to distribute false information on an online forum such as this. Even less comprehensible if the original poster of an alternative facts type article allegedly does not even believe the article posted.

Questionable behavior? This thread is to post and discuss. She didn't make the claim herself nor write the article. Exactly, it's an online forum, with a thread such as this. Posting something you believe or not is really not an issue. I'm sure her intention was for people to discuss their thoughts of the article, not their thoughts of her posting it.

Just read through this this morning. I actually intended to swaddle pretty religiously until I did. Thoughts? Other research? Also, dumb question, but how can I wrap/blanket baby that isn't swaddling that still keeps him warm? Or should I just buy sleepers?

If you don't want to swaddle try sleep sacks.  I love swaddling and I'm a big fan of Dr. Karp's book.  I don't swaddle 24/7, but it was a good way with my kids to establish a nighttime routine and it made them happy.  Not all babies enjoy swaddling and I certainly won't force it on this kid if she doesn't. Swaddling helped my boys when they got overstimulated.

The article suggests cuddling, nurturing and nursing to soothe a baby instead of swaddling, but at some point you also need to sleep.

  • I swaddled until I couldn't swaddle no mo'. There are important guidelines to follow though for their age and hip development so make sure to check up on those (that's what could be in the article...I'm a dummy and haven't read it, just here to sing the praises of swaddling, swaddle sacks and sleep sacks).

  • I have heard of wide-spread propaganda in Brazil and the Caribbean pointing to an alternate source of zika - the ministries of public health are having a heck of a time convincing the populace in some provinces and rural areas otherwise.  (If you read international news you will come across discussion about new vaccines brought to the region coinciding with the outbreak.  And it has been quite a mess trying to clean that up.)

@busyzee The 'poisin' thing isn't even a 'thing' - where did you even come across that?  Sigh... I'm going to have to agree with @mj8215 on this one that it is a bit irresponsible to post an 'article' like that without context.  This may be an artifact of my academic background crossing lines here as I'm generally open minded and do not expect all things to be definitively accounted for or explained by science.  But there are boundaries...  Anyway, my understanding is that this sort of thing (posting random articles) is commonplace on Facebook and social media - so I may just be insulated from the emergent culture.

  • @yellow1daisy the consumer reports study that the article is based on had a few flaws.  Rest assured if your child was within the limits of the seat and it was installed correctly she was perfectly safe.  Car seats pass very strict testing so as long as they are used, installed and cared for according to manufacturers instructions they are safe.  Age only comes into play when deciding to forward face and when moving from a 5pt harness to a booster.

Can we talk about red dye? I 'hear' random mentions in real life of how bad it is, but I just started(right now) looking it up? Holy confusing. Not really sure what I'm looking for yet.

ETA: looks like red dye 40 is what's at question, I think. I'm just wondering if this is something I should be on the lookout for when feeding my toddler.

Great articulate article, covering both sides. A lot was worth quoting and remembering.

A few moms in my birth month board swear red dye adversely affects their kids and are way better off without it. I'm curious what people say about it and research to support or deny this claim, but I will say this: it's never really been an issue for us because it's a very easily avoidable ingredient. I couldn't find it in our kitchen.

Thanks for commenting! On just quick google searches, I guess some day it can make certain kids hyper or have behavioral problems?! We normally eat pretty healthy and can't find it in my kitchen either. My husband mentioned it the other day and I just started thinking about it! I guess they can sneak it into lots of things?!
  • @LoveLee85 I'm not sure what number red dye is in candies but I can't eat red m&m's or red suckers. I go into really bad coughing fits that are hard to stop. This happens to my mom and her dad too.

*drools*  I have soooo been missing deli sandwiches these past few months.  Although pregnancy has not stopped me from eating soft cheeses and the occasional tuna sandwich and hot dogs so I'm not sure why I bother staying away from deli meat either lol!

  • @Xath I wish I was as brave as you (seriously). I've been dying for this sushi at the grocery store I go to, I've gotten it dozens of times, never an issue. I actually even get a veggie roll, but it's prepped on the same surface as the raw fish. I'm just a scaredy cat. I even read the article and I still can't do it. I also avoided parsley, caffeine, and pineapple for the first 14 weeks. But that's me. You go get that sushi!!

  • @kerils I think everyone just goes with their gut feeling, I totally avoided parsley because I have used it in the past for slight delays in my period so I knew it works for that..alot of people told me not to eat eggplant at all but I had it a few times ...I don't drink any caffiene as is, sometimes maybe Matcha but I couldn't resist pineapple! I had tons of sushi hours before I tested positive @Xath I guess that doesn't count? ;)
  • @LoveLee85 I made the terrible mistake of using Dr. Google in the beginning. Learned my lesson around 10 weeks or so, but it was too late by then. It's not common sense, it's crazy internet people. I logically know that, but I just can't convince myself to actually eat it.

@BusyZee I don't drink coffee either. It's chocolate. I am an absolute chocoholic, it's really the only sweet thing I even go for. But I avoided it for quite awhile, and now I only have it on occasion.

At this point the only thing I'm avoiding is wine, but I had a glass each month or so with DS. I typically ask myself, "What would Europeans do?" I feel like things get blown way out of proportion in the US.

Oh man, Dr.Google has convinced me I was dying of a brain tumor more than once! I'm not even joking, sadly. I'm prone to bad cluster migraines at times. With everything, do what makes you comfortable and happy. Caffeine is the main thing my doctor said as long as it's not more than 200mg, I'm fine! I don't have caffeine everyday, but most days I do have a little. In normal non pregnant life, I didn't even have more than 200mg of coffee. I don't buy soda for our home(because DH and I would drink it to often), but it is a special treat for myself to have a fountain cherry Coke every great now and then. Ha! Whatever motivates!
  • @LoveLee85 basically if you start looking into anything, you can't eat it during pregnancy. I made the mistake of searching if I could eat yuca and well... dr google said no. Your just left starving and paranoid that's about it. Btw i PM you!
  • Thanks for the article @Xath. Those are basically the exact guidelines I've followed after doing my own research with DD. I'm not saying following strict rules is silly because if it makes you less nervous then there is no harm. But for me, I realized that listeria can literally be in anything including all the fresh produce I consume so why am I making myself nuts depriving myself of the stuff I want?

  • @LoveLee85 DD was born in Hawaii and I ate so much pineapple!  Someone told me it's actually something in the core that could cause early labor but you'd have to eat about a truckload and eat the core which everyone cuts out.  Who knows if that's true... I ate a ton in the last few weeks of pregnancy to try to get her to come out and I still went 9 days late!

It's a research study done by March of Dimes that links maternal height to preterm birth (shorter women are at higher risk of preterm birth). Thought it was interesting. It just came out, so they don't know why yet, they just found a link.

  • +1 to eating pineapple (especially the core, it's my favorite) like it's my job.
  • Ditto @Itsnotyourturn I eat pineapple until there is no skin left on my tongue. No pregnancy exceptions
  • @dcwtada omg yes.  I've had bloody tongue from it before too!
  • I thought this was good for explaining a good latch. Anything to add/change STM's who have breastfed? Or other experienced people?

  • @kerils I think that's a pretty good start.  I found the football hold a nice one, too.  Regardless, be prepared to bite down on something every now and again, even with a good latch.  It doesn't always hurt, but there are definitely times when it can be a bit more "uncomfortable" than bro-bf people will often admit.  I bf until DS was 15 months, and I had some trouble when my nipples were raw.  The vast majority of the time, though, it was not painful at all.  This was something nobody warned me about.
  • @kerils the article is definitely a good start.  One thing I will add is to experiment with different holds on different sides.  From some reason I had it in my head that I had to use the same hold on both sides and as a result struggled.  Turned out that cross body worked for my right side and football for my left.  Once I figured that out BF became so much easier.
