Baby Names

Jason with nn

DH and I were thinking of using the name Jay Arthur, but Jay sounds too much like a nickname to me. We're thinking of going with Jason Arthur now, and still using Jay as a nickname. I know people don't usually nickname the name Jason, so is it weird? Or are there basically no rules to nicknaming? We've gone through literally 2000 boy names and finally agreed on one, so hopefully it sticks.

Re: Jason with nn

  • My good friends name is Jason and everyone calls him Jay, never struck me as being weird.

I would definitely go for the full name, I think you could also get away with James as a given name if you don't love Jason

  • @laurenm2123, James has always been one of my favorites, but our last name starts with "S" so it doesn't flow very well. I'm glad you know a Jason that goes by Jay!

  • Honestly I have known a few Jason's that go by Jay not weird at all and I like it. It's not used much anymore but it's completely recognizable to everyone

  • Yes it makes sense. My brother is Jayson bc my mom didn't like "Jace" and she thought with that spelling they would call him"Jay". People do cal him jay but I don't think it's bc of spelling!
  • My cousin is Jason and we call him Jay. I like it.

  • Maybe I'm biased because my dad's middle name is "Jay", but I think Jay can stand alone as a name, I don't think of it as a nickname. However, if you made Jay a nickname of Jason, I wouldn't think it was weird at all.
  • I think Jay can be a stand alone name- I know two Jay's, and neither is short for anything. But I wouldn't side-eye Jason nn Jay either.

  • I know several Jasons who go by Jay, as well as several Jays that have it as a standalone name. I think it's fine whichever way you choose to go.
