  • @kassyfry I'm right there with ya on the cruelty aspect. I grew up on a farm and we would have bucket calves/cows that basically were like pets until we sent them off for slaughter so I always have to kind of roll my eyes when someone is all idk how you can eat meat when they're so mean to the cows! The majority of our beef is still from the family farm so I'm like nah, those cows had a goooooood life before they made it to our plate.

Also +1 on the non-eco friendly household. We cloth diaper, but we did it to save money, not because we care about the landfills, haha.
  • Thank you, @huskermom14. A lot of the larger conventional farms have cows living in barns with waterbeds to lay on, fans and sprinkler systems for cooling, cow "scratch posts" for comfort, etc. Organic farms may have some of these things too, but most commonly cows are housed outside in the summer, on pasture, with no shelter or hear abatement.

  • Feel free to flame me for this one bc I am not a doctor...but I am totally side eyeing my SIL and her Dr. My SIL asked her doctor to be induced two weeks before her due date on a Friday. Not because of complications, not bc of pain or being uncomfortable but so more people can visit her in the hospital on the weekend and she doesnt want to wait bc "2 weeks early is close enough". And her Dr was like sure Friday works for me!
To clarify I would not side eye medical need or even being very uncomfortable but they literally talked about this a month ago and she isnt even due until March.
  • I said (well yelled) shut up at my 5/6 period Wednesday. They were being so terrible and I just didn't know what to do and lost it.  I felt bad and apologized, but it did get their attention and they were pretty silent the rest of the afternoon.

That sounds crazy to me. I thought babies weren't considered full term now until 39 weeks. DD was born at 39 weeks and still weighed less than 6 lbs.
  • @mombod You sure there isn't something else factoring in on the decision on the doctor's side? We get a lot of early term babies in the NICU with breathing problems. This seems weird.
  • @doodleoodle I believe full term is 37w, but obviously they try to get most moms past 39w before scheduling any inductions or C-sections, unless there is a medical necessity.  Multiples would be the known exception as most twins are taken at 37w unless your CNM or OB is crunchy like mine and let you go to 38w5d.
  • Borderline malpractice, especially for no reason other than the sake of convenience.

My doc is inducing me at 39 weeks for convenience sake (he's leaving the country), but also because I have GD.
  • @Ahutch428 Yep! I'm super excited. Are you going?
  • @michaela0704 I thought it had recently changed to 39 weeks, but I could very well be wrong. Either way, it's crazy.  :#
  • No other reason. She currently doesnt have any complications. This doctor induced her last time a week early bc my SIL wanted to guarentee she had her and not another Dr. Apparently bc there wasnt any major complications with the last induction a week early she said it wasnt a big deal.
  • Another confession is that I am very annoyed at the other OB in the practice (not the one I usually see) due to our experience with him yesterday at the a/s.  So much so that I'm considering switching practices, which is really frustrating for me to even think about at the moment.

I felt very judged when he made a crazy face (e.g., wide eyes, lifted brows) when I mentioned this was our 3rd (i.e., singleton after twins) and then he proceeded to ask if WE (not I) wanted to have my tubes tied during my C-section.

WTF, I'm 5 years away from AMA... I answered on DH and I's behalf, telling the OB that DH will have a vasectomy when we're 100% sure...

Maybe this is a better Monday B*tchfest or TW Tuesday... oh well.
  • I have a friend that asked to be induced early both times and her doctor agreed.  I was shocked.  Luckily she had fairly textbook inductions and both kiddos were perfectly healthy.  Definitely not my style. And I don't like induction happy doctors either.  Medical necessity is different.

I would like to be more eco friendly but I tend to be lazy. I buy a mix of organic and regular products.  I also buy a mix of toxin free or organic cleaning or personal care products and regular.  I'm not sure why I do this.  I recycle some because it's free pickup with our trash.

My FFFC - I make my 4yo play in her room alone during DD's nap time.  I tell myself it's her independent play time and sometimes she still lays down and naps but I also need my kid free time for my sanity.  Sometimes she comes out and we cuddle and watch a movie but sometimes I go crazy and get cranky If she doesn't stay in her room and give me an hour or so alone.

I also texted 6 different baby sitters for tomorrow and they were all out of town, booked or busy.  I think it's the universe telling me I don't deserve a date night but I'm kind of depressed about it.

I don't enjoy weekends as much being a sahm.  I love my husband but I'm used to him working late every night and when he's home all weekend he kind of drives me nuts.

Maybe it's a theme or something wrong with me this pregnancy that everyone drives me crazy??
  • I'm doing cloth and sewing my own fitteds because I'm saving so much money. My reasoning has nothing to do with keeping waste out of landfills (although, sure, it's a nice benefit). If disposables were cheaper than cloth, I'd do disposables.

My confession: I hate football. I think it's a dumb sport, and I only go to Super Bowl parties because I like hanging out with friends and family and eating yummy junk food.

I try my best to protect the environment when I can. I recycle diligently. I cut up the plastic rings that hold water bottles/soda together. I just can't buy into the whole organic thing though. I gave a huge side eye to someone I know who registered for $50 worth of organic cleaning supplies. I've been using Lysol since my DD was born and she's doing okay. Are they really going to make that much of a difference for so much more money? I'd probably buy more organic products if they weren't so much more expensive. Like you can have the products that are better for you as long as you can afford them.

Alsooo we don't drink regular milk. I just buy almond milk. It's not because of any kind of conviction, it's just a preference.
  • I make my own natural cleaning products and cloth diaper, but it's not for the environment. It's cheaper, and also most commercial cleaning products give me an awful headache.

DH grew up recycling and I didn't. We don't recycle now because we have to pay to get an extra bin for recycling. That makes no sense to me, so I won't do it. I think it should be the other way around. If I have to learn what products go into which bin (not to mention having two trash cans in the kitchen) I think the trash service should deduct from our bill, not add to it.

Why? Strictly because they get antibiotics? You say it with such conviction, as though an organic farm is significantly worse for a cow in some way.

  • I know people who were induced or had c-sections just for "convenance" or "the baby is too big" or whatever. I cringe every time I hear it.

  • I buy a lot of organics.  Especially the dirty dozen as they're referred to for produce.  I have local organic milk, eggs, sour cream and cottage cheese delivered to my house weekly.  I've seen too many horrible videos of how animals are treated to not buy off on the organic farms idea.  I've spent a decent amount of time reading about the differences with how meats are labeled at places like wholefoods and the 5 step labeling process they have for letting the consumer know how the meats they are purchasing were raised.  Now I am not by any means a subject matter expert in farming.  I would just rather know that the steak I'm about to consume was responsibly raised and had a good life while it was alive.  I also purchase mostly "green" cleaning products.  I have 2 dogs and I don't want them exposed to harmful chemicals anymore than I want to be exposed to them at home while I'm cleaning.

We recycle paper, mixed paper, metals and plastics.  My husband also composts stuff in his compost bin thing he has.

You are gonna have SO much fun!! We saw him when he opened in Lincoln and actually debated getting tickets to see him again in Omaha, haha. It was such a great show!!
  • I don't know a ton about agriculture, but I live in a rural area, and the small-scale farmers i know generally use really humane  and sustainable practices but aren't technically organic. For example, the farms where I buy beef and poultry use antibiotics, but only when the animals are sick. The farm where we get blueberries sprays once a year, before the berries form with a pesticide that is known to wash off within a week. I think more about buying from places like these when I can. If I can't buy local, I don't really worry about it though. Grocery store meat kind of weirds me out, but everything else I buy there when it isn't in season here. I actually did quit my dairy share that i used to get milk from because it worked out to  $7/gallon. I switched to organic milk for dd and conventional for dh and I, but now I'm thinking I may go all conventional unless i decide to go back to the expensive local place...
  • I buy local farms first, then organic when it makes sense, and then conventional.  We recycle, I'm actually almost nutty about it but I grew up that way... and we cloth diapers our twins as well as use green cleaning products for everyday.  I personally don't find our shopping choices all that much more expensive... but I'm a fairly mindful shopper and buy store brand organics for cheaper than brand name conventional... I'm not crazy about it, like my kids have had none OG berries and other items people claim should be OG but I think we hit a good balance for our family without breaking the bank.

I replied to someone else above with this

Ill add more as well. Cow comfort is a big deal on the non organic farms. More comfortable cows=more milk=the farmer making more money. They aren't going to purposely abuse cows or let them live in poor conditions becuase it will hurt milk production. Sure, organic farms take good care of their cows too. I said that I would like to be a cow on a conventional farm becuase of the better chance for more cow comfort.

    Andplusalso
Just because a sick animal is given antibiotics, doesn't mean that it is cruel or mean, in my opinion. We give ourselves and our children medicine when sick, so why shouldn't we also give it to animals? All antibiotics for all livestock has a withhold period. The meat/milk can not be sold until this period is cleared or else the farm will face fines. The milk is dumped down the drain until the antibiotics are cleared as well. It is tested by the farmer before it is picked up, tested again by the hauling company, and then the entire semi load is tested for antibiotics when arriving where ever the milk is shipped to. Your chances of having antibiotic in the milk is zero.
  • @michaela0704 I keep waiting for my dr's to ask about whether this is my last baby because I am having csection #4 but I guess there is no point since my catholic hospital doesn't allow tubal ligations to be performed.

  • @kassyfry Just wanted to say that I appreciate reading your perspective. I love animals so much that I should probably be a vegetarian ...and I have thought a lot about my milk and how the dairy cows are treated. It is nice to know a little more about the general conditions from someone working with them every day.
Do you have any insight into grass fed free range beef? It makes me feel better to buy it, but is it another thing that doesn't make a huge difference?

I don't have any personal experience with grass fed fere range beef. But my husbands friends all raise beef cows, my in laws always have steers, and my husband and I currently have two beef steers. I will just kind of echo what I said above. A beef farmer isn't going to purposely make his beef cows live in bad conditions, abuse them, etc. Farmers all care about the animals they raise or else they wouldn't be doing that as their livelihood. A lot of people in the ag industry are very aware of the messages PETA gets across and are cognizant of that when raising their livestock. Also, beef can not be sold with antibiotics in it in the United States, just like milk.

If range grass fed beef, organic food, etc makes anyone feel better when consuming it, then that is fine with me, just please be informed consumers.
  • My FFFC is that I think it only makes sense to recycle cans and glass bottles. It's cheaper to do so than to make new ones, that's why you get paid for doing so. The recycling process also puts out a lot of pollutants into the environment so I don't feel like it's actually better in that regard either. I'm all for living green. We eat the organic fruits/veggies that matter, use cleaners without harsh chemicals etc. but we don't recycle.

*Disclaimer* I was in college the last time I did any research on recycling so my opinion may be incorrect by this point haha
  • @mombod yeah, I would side eye that too. I had a friend who scheduled her c-section because "it is just easier that way." No medical reason. I think, that unless something is going on medically, let baby come when he/she is naturally supposed to.

@lovesclimbing. We cloth diapers for the same reason, money. I am not antienvironment. We recycle etc. but environment is just a bonus for the cloth diapering.

I really have nothing big to confess except I have let DS (3) watch way too TV. He normally has a 20-30 minute daily limit but I have not followed it. I am telling myself, one bad week is okay.
