A gallon of water a day.

My midwife is persistent in that she wants me to drink a gallon of water a day. Has your ob or midwife mentioned this? Thoughts?

  • My OB mentioned I really need to stay hydrated but that in the summer it's going to be especially important. She did mentioned the goal of a gallon a day since the third trimester is going to be in the summer. 

    I normally drink about a gallon of water a day in the summer anyway since my house has no central air and I get hot Af

  • Yes, water is super important. Especially in the summer. I was pregnant with my first through the summer (October baby) and in our child birthing classes they say dehydration can cause contractions and be really painful, so its super important. A gallon...meh..I don't know.. I still try to stick to the half of my body weight..and a maybe a bit more if I can stomach it.

    Ugh that sounds terrible, I'd be chugging all day. I tried to drink 100 Oz every day for about 3 weeks, which was pretty doable. Now I'm drinking most of that in herbal tea (I was a 6 cup a day coffee drinker, now more than an 8 oz every few days makes me sick) and I'm not tracking it at all,just going by how I feel 
  • My doctor said a gallon as well. She also said that any non-cafinated drink counts, so juice, milk, etc all help. But tea, coffee and soda for example, wouldn't. 
  • A gallon of water a day is good for you even when not pregnant! And yes, my doctor suggested plenty of water, also. 
  • Add lemon juice and ice. It helps me guzzle it down. 
  • How many oz is in a gallon of water?  That seems awfully high.  Isn't a gallon 128 oz or something close?

    I thought general rule was to aim for half your body weight in oz.  (Ie 140lbs ÷2= 70 oz/ day)

    I usually manage about 60-70 oz and my OB seemed to think it was a bit high and not always realistic to maintain.  He did indicate that it was medically "ideal" for my weight though.  He said be careful about drinking too much water because it could be dangerous.  He said if exercising or in warmer weather more water is fine.  He said food with high water content also counts towards that goal such as spinach, soup, etc.  

    For reference it is also 20°F where I live and am sure I will be drinking closer to 100 oz once summer weather hits.  I will probably need to buy and drag one of those female urination devices (stick that lets a woman pee standing up) if I want to do anything outside this summer. I am only half joking about the pee stick.

  • In the third trimester I'd have to live on the toilet to drink a gallon a day. I swear I spent more time peeing the last few weeks I was pregnant with DD than I have in my entire life. I drink about 80oz a day now and feel like I spend too much time peeing already..

  • @deansgirl14 hahaha my little sister (she's 21) I is the meat-head type who works out and literally carries a gallon jug of water with her wherever she goes Hahahaha too funny!
  • I would say rather than going by ounces, a good way to tell if you're getting "enough" water is the color of your urine. If it is very yellow, then your body is dehydrated whether you feel it or not. Your urine should be clear to a pale straw color when you are properly hydrated. If that's 70 oz for you, then great. If that's 160 oz for you, then awesome. But everyone is different. The important thing is that staying hydrated is healthy for your entire body and right now that includes the fetus. And yes, it doesn't mean only straight water counts, but if you're uncertain on your overall water intake, then drinking water is a good place to start. 
  • I find it gets harder to drink a gallon a day towards the end of pregnancy. Try to mix it up if you have to: Lemonade, Crystal Light packs, add lime or lemon, etc.

    For those who are planning to BF, you will need a gallon, or even more, of water a day. Takes lots of aqua to make milk!

    Hey ya'll!  I health coach (which doesn't make me a doctor) but the majority of people are dehydrated.  It's kinda crazy.  Half your weight in ounces is the minimum recommendation.
    I was drinking a gallon and a half in my 3rd trimester, and that was at 128 pounds.
    It's so hard to change this habit if you haven't done it before, but I'm pretty sure you'll notice great differences!
    Drinking too much water CAN be dangerous, but it seriously takes a lot to do that.  

    Mega bonus:  because I was so well hydrated when I went into labor, they didn't push putting an iv in and I didn't have to labor with that pesky needle.
