Still Breastfeeding?

Anyone still breastfeeding? I'm still breastfeeding my 14mo and he still breastfeeds quite a bit. I'm hoping to continue and be able to tandem feed. Anyone else?

Re: Still Breastfeeding?

  • Still nursing my 2 year old. But hoping he is weaned before LO arrives. That being said, he'd probably happily nurse well past my comfort zone  :D
  • I'm still breastfeeding DS! He turns 1 on the 18th. I'm thinking of weaning, he nurses Allllllllllll night. Mostly just for comfort sucking but still, I'd like him to start sleeping through the night.

  • I'm still nursing my 17 month old daughter...she loves nursing and is showing no signs of stopping.  My nipples are a little sore already from the new pregnancy but I'd like to keep nursing her as long as I possibly can! I think we'll have to be careful to eat enough additional calories while breastfeeding and growing another tiny human!
  • My son is 17 months and still bf at bedtime. I think i will probably go another month and then stop. @daniellelynette my son was the same way until i night weaned at 12.5 months. His sleep them got better slowly and sometimes its erratic..since 15 months he sttn most nights now but we still cosleep. Have faith! It will happen i felt like it never would.

  • Still nursing my 10 month old. No plans to wean but it is very uncomfortable right now with the tenderness.

  • Still nursing my 16 month old, attempting to gently wean (dropping one feed per month) he eats first in the morning and once mid day and Then at bedtime. I'd like to be done, I love it but my nips hurt again, I guess from the pregnancy but that crap is hurting!
  • Still nursing my 10 month old. Pregnancy has all but killed my supply, so I'm going to quit pumping at wok and nurse as long as he wants. I have more than enough milk in the freezer to get us to s year.

  • @atthemoment how did you manage to night wean? I've got no idea how I'm going to do it. He wakes up all the time and wants his boobie and if he doesn't get it he will roll around and flail and cry and even sit up and yell. It's awful. Usually I just give in and give him boobie :( sometimes I can snuggle him back to sleep but that's rare.
  • @daniellelynette We are a little late to the night weaning party, should of done it WAY sooner, and tonight will be night 5. I'm expecting it will take a few more days to a week for us. It probably is a little harder because we bed share.

What I think is helping us is having a strong routine in place. And no matter what, not giving in, even if it means I get less sleeps. Otherwise I feel they learn, if I protest enough, I get what I want. So I get ready for bed, we nurse in a chair and I let him know it's "last call for milk until tomorrow." Then we do a diaper change, put on PJs, floss, brush, and then read books or dance to some music and then he falls asleep. If he asks for milk, I offer water. It hasn't been pretty and there has been some middle of the night dancing together to get him back to sleep. But we both need to be done with night nursing.

Our next challenge? Bringing a bed for him into our room and transition him. So. Scared.
  • I'm still nursing my 11 month old. She will be one on the first of Feb. we night weaned a couple months ago but I know she won't be ready to wean completely for several weeks/months. I don't know that I want to tandem, not really my thing. I have thought about weaning her but pumping to build up a freezer stash for the new baby!

  • Same here! I'm all for tandem nursing but I'd really like him to wean the night time feedings. I know I'm going to need the extra sleep lol
  • Are any of you noticing different symptoms that you may think be related to breastfeeding. I feel like I'm a lot more crampier (if that's even a word) than my last pregnancy, but then again it could just be because it's my second time around
  • @daniellelynette i just went cold turkey. I read like 3 sleep training books but could never commit to let him CIO. He was the same as your LO fussing like crazy 4x a night for boobs. But One night he was extra fussy and i was like nope I'm done this isnt helping you or me sleep. At first it was really hard bc he was so used to nursing at night but really you are already waking up so much so taking the plunge and just doing it is really the hardest part. I gave him at first 8 hrs at night without nursing but he would wake up at 430 like clockwork so i evemtually cut out his am feeding too. Its hard but im hoping both our babies STTN before #2 comes!

  • I'm still nursing my 18 month old. He nurses 2-3 times a day. I'm really hoping he weans before the baby comes!! My nipples are getting more sensitive also with the pregnancy. I'm so glad someone started this thread!
@daniellelynette we had to hire a sleep consultant at 13 months. Best money I have ever spent!! He was cosleeping and nursing all night long and I was over it. We went cold turkey. I could nurse before bed and then that was it. I would put him in his crib drowsy and if he woke up we did not take him out. We patted and rubbed his back until
calm and repeated until he was asleep (I can't do CIO). The first several nights were rough. We slept on the floor of his room for 2-3 nights. By night 5 he was sleeping 11 hours in his crib and has since then!!
  • Omg @jessieR358 I need that in my life. I need him to sleep in his crib. I am SO JEALOUS. Seriously. My only problem is that if I put him down awake he will cry and scream... did yours so that? Do I just have to work through that? It would be SO GREAT to get him sleeping in his own bed soon!!!

So we did not put him down fully awake. He was on the verge of asleep but drowsy. My son would wake and cry and be like what are you doing?! I should mention we had to start out in a travel crib that unzipped on the side so we could lay down next to him and pretend to be sleeping with him. Baby steps ha. So we would rub his back and pat him until he was calm. Then stop. He most likely would pick his head up and start crying so we repeated over and over and over until he was asleep. We got no sleep the first couple of nights. My DH and I took turns. Every time he woke up during the night we would do that again, but no nursing! It was hard because he would be so mad grabbing at my shirt. But we all sleep so much better now. Now I nurse him and put him in his crib. He may cry and protest for several minutes but then he falls asleep.
  • Still nursing a 7 mo old with no intention to stop. I am open to tandem nursing once the next little is here. Sore breasts are starting to get bothersome. It would help of she wasn't a kneader but when she nurses she kneads my breast like a cat and that huuuuurts. It seemed like my supply was suffering, she wanted to nurse more often than usual for a few days, but maybe it was a growth spurt? She's nursing her regular amount again. I am ebf at the moment so I don't really know my out put in ounces. I usually take fenugreek, has anyone taken this while pregnant? Since I found out I haven't been taking it, but would like to start again. Any experience?

I would ask your OB on fenugreek but I made lactation cookies, drank Gatorade and ate old fashioned oatmeal (not quick cooking) to help my supply. Those lactation cookies are addicting so be careful. My husband loved them too, haha.

  • still nursing my 9.5 month old DD. I plan to go a year, but she seems like she will be pretty easy to wean. I have noticed my boobs are kind of sore, although it doesn't help that she bit both my nipples earlier today.....
  • I'm still nursing my 28 month old daughter. I'm ready to wean, but she is not. I'm hoping this pregnancy can help with weaning.

  • @jusmale I feel a little guilty but I'm also kind of hoping for the same thing.
  • Still nursing my 2 year old. She nurses at night and in the morning. I'm hoping the pregnancy helps with weaning, but she is pretty attached and demanding of her "nunnies"
  • I'm still nursing my 14 month old. He nurses anywhere between 4-8 times a day. I had to night wean him to get my body to ovulate for this pregnancy. It was really tough when I did night wean, bc he started wanting to nurse every hour during the day. He still likes to nurse a lot but I'm ok with it. I would tandem nurse if my milk doesn't dry up like last time. Although, if it does, he will self-wean and that is so much easier than trying to force a baby to wean.

Im drinking tons and tons of water to stay as hydrated as possible. I'm also eating Brewers yeast to try to maintain a good supply. I was only able to nurse my DD for 4 months when I got pregnant with L.
  • I'm still breastfeeding my 21 month old. Finally night weaned this week, but he still nurses a lot. I'm going to let him self wean, so we'll see if he is still nursing when this baby comes.

  • My nipples are so sensitive. Are you guys just pushing through? I'm not letting him do his usual acrobats while he nurses.
  • Mine aren't sensitive yet, but they were with my last pregnancy. It got 1000 times better in the 2nd tri for me.

  • @jessieR358 my sensitivity started around week 6 and yes, I'm pushing through it but it's mostly the initial latching and then it starts to pass. I've definitely tried to enforce no hijinks when he is nursing. Sometimes that goes better than others. He is pretty much night weaned but has become quite attached at naps. So once I'm sure he is 100% okay with not nursing at night, nap time weaning starts.
  • I'm still nursing my 22mo and I don't think he has any intentions of weaning fully, but I too am hoping that pregnancy with reduce my supply. I currently only nurse on one side, because of issues with his tongue tie. Originally I was interested in tandem nursing, but since his tie revision didn't resolve all of our issues, I'm not sure what I'll do.
  • @Carebella  mine is night weaned also. I know he can nap without nursing because he does so on days I'm at work, but if I'm at home, he will protest. I've been having my husband put him to bed lately so I don't have to nurse him.  I'm hoping my milk dries up during this pregnancy too.
  • My milk has all but dried up and my 21month old is not happy. He's always been a velcro baby and the only thing he will accept to comfort him is boob. I'm gotten a really bad nursing aversion and am only letting him nurse to sleep for nap and bedtime. Now he didn't fall asleep before I have to stop. He has been having a really rough time of it and waking up multiple times a night. He sleeps in our bed and I want to get him in his crib before this baby comes. Poor guy is in for quite the set of changes !
  • Oct 16 lurker here.. I'm NTNP right now so am  wondering about tandem BF if I do get KU again. I have low supply so it would be a challenge to keep what little supply I have if I did get pregnant. @Emeraldcity I recently bought Brewers yeast and ick! Could barely stomach the 1 tablespoon I mixed in my smoothie. I'm wondering how you take your Brewers yeast, I'd like to try something different.

  • @brzvice, I don't take a full tablespoon at a time. I can't. I have to drown it in vanilla flavored yogurt and then put lots of granola on top. If I don't have it for breakfast, I try to eat it as an afternoon snack.
I also mix a malt flavored powder with my milk and it is suppose to help with supply. I did the Brewers yeast, the malt mix, and fenugreek awhile back prior to pregnancy to help my supply and my baby gained a pound in a week. He had chronic ear infections and could barely nurse because it was so uncomfortable for him. He ended up not gaining weight from 6 to 9 months, which is why I needed to do all this stuff. All these things really helped.
  • I'm dealing with some serious bad nursing manners. He won't leave my other nipple alone when he is nursing and it is super uncomfortable. He gets pissed if I try to keep him from playing too. Not really sure how to stop it but something has to give.
  • Resurrecting this thread to ask how everyone is doing? Still nursing? Weaned by choice?

I am also looking for something to help my supply. I take one to two tablespoons of brewers yeast and am eating steel cut oats... Can't do dairy products because of DD allergies. I just called my ob to confirm if I can take fenugreek or mm tea. Thoughts?
  • We're still nursing. I thought for sure a couple weeks ago I was going to dry up because I had wicked morning sickness and the thought of nursing made we want to cry, so we just didn't nurse for three days. He must still be getting something though because we're back to nursing every night at bed time. On the other hand, maybe it's just a comfort thing. Who knows at this point. I do plan on weaning him at 18 months. That will give me 6 months before baby comes and I just have this irrational fear that kid #1 is going to resent kid #2 if suddenly he doesn't get first dibs at the boob. I figure if he has 6 months where he hasn't gotten to have it at all, he can't blame the new baby. @khenry12 I remember at around 6 months when my supply started to drop I saw a lactation consultant who gave me a tincture. You have to take it 4 times a day and tastes like balls but it did the trick. I'll see if I can find the bottle and let you know what it was called.

  • We're still nursing over here! I think I finally have him night weaned, but my nipples are definitely getting more sensitive. I feel like my supply is dwindling, but he just keeps on nursing! Wishing you all the best in your pregnancies and BF journies!
  • Still nursing my 14 mth old. He has no desire to stop. I'm ready though. At least for him to stop at night. I have no desire to tandem feed so I just need to figure out when I can sleep train him I guess! Good luck to everyone!
  • I am still nursing my 18 month old. I plan on letting her self wean, so I expect to be tandem nursing but we will see...
