Pregnancy Books

Hey ladies :) I'm wondering what pregnancy books you all are reading, if any? I've only got the Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy book (which is really informative and I like it a lot) and I'm looking to read some more. I'd love to hear what books you like/don't like so far!

  • I have "What to expect when you are expecting"  Cliché but its super informative.  I have a book that goes along with the bump too (I cant think of the name), but its something like week by week your bump . . .  I also got the Belly Laughs book as something light hearted to read. DH also has a few daddy books!

  • What to Expect, of course, since I got a free copy at my intake appointment. I also ordered Funny Little Pregnant Things for laughs.
  • I like Your Best Pregnancy Ever by Denise Jagroo and Jill Hoefs. I bought this book after my daughter's birth specifically to read about how to heal my diastasis recti (split abdominal muscles) and wished I'd had it during my pregnancy. It had the most comprehensive information about taking care of your body and staying strong during and after pregnancy. (Full disclosure: Denise was my physical therapist and treated my diastasis recti) This book is oriented mostly to your body and fitness. You'll still want a general pregnancy guidebook.

My other go-to book is What to Expect When You're Expecting. Mayo Clinic book is also very good.

  • My husband loved Baby Proofing Your Marriage.

I loved The Bump's Book of Lists for Pregnancy and Baby. It was simple and oriented towards my thinking style.
  • @IvorySoapGirl Thank you for the "Your best preg.." rec! My sisters second pregnancy split her abs and it's no joke! Because of all she's still going through I'm really focused on learned how to prevent it as best as possible. Ordered the book already.

I've been reading "Do chocolate lovers have sweeter babies?" It's really an easy but informative read regarding the science of pregnancy.

  • Thanks for all of the awesome suggestions everyone! I'm browsing them all on Amazon right now! I had heard that the What to Expect When You're Expecting book wasn't that great but maybe I should give it a try.

@JWatt5 Yes I love those apps too! Also have the What to Expect app. I read everything on there and have been slacking on reading books so had to ask for some recommendations!

@Vamason89 Thanks for sharing one that your husband liked as well! My husband has The Expectant Father but he'd like to read more as well. I'll put Baby Proofing your Marriage on our list!

  • I've been reading Pregnancy, Childbirth, and the NewbornI heard an interview with one of the authors and thought she seemed really practical. So far it seems informative without being overwhelming. I will say I'm stuck in the "what childbirth is really like" chapter--so much information, but straightforward.

  • My sister got me, DH and our dog (lol) baby books.  I have 9 months.  I like it because I'm scared to read what to expect when youre expecting because i'll end up thinking I have every bad thing the book says.  This book is written by a doctor and tells you what to expect as far as growth and development.  It also explains what you should eat.  DH has the expectant father, so he reads all the bad stuff and flips out.  Better him than me. lol  My dog has (i think its called) Happy dog, happy baby.  I plan to start that shortly.  My dog has been an only child so I worry how she'll be.

  • I'm reading "The Mindful Mom-to-Be". It's a bit too crunchy for me but it's very positive and has great information. It has some good physical and mental exercises and it's the reason I started journaling my pregnancy.
  • If you are hoping/planning for an unmedicated birth I recommend anything by Ina May Gaskin, especially her Guide to Childbirth. For BFing, I recommend The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding.

I am am going to check out The Mindful Mom-to-Be! That sounds like it could be up my alley. @LivLew
  • @lyndshurt I'm hoping for an unmedicated birth. That's why I'm being very open-minded to meditation ideas. My midwife also recommended May's books so I'm definitely reading it next.
  • I have the Mayo Clinic book and LOVE it. H has The Expectant Father, and he really likes it as well. He did get a little scared after reading about all the stuff that can go wrong, but ended up talking to one of his friends whose wife had a late loss and they now have their rainbow baby!

Another one that came highly recommended for us was Baby Bargains. I'm not that far into it but there's a TON of info once you're ready to start shopping.

I also love What To Do When You're Havung Two for any other twin moms.
