Does insurance cover ultrasound?

Does insurance cover ultrasound at 10-12 weeks? Is it necessary? Is Doppler just as good? Any experience with this?

Re: Does insurance cover ultrasound?

  • Depends on you insurance. You will have to call an get specifics. None of us can tell you 100% of what's covered/not covered. I get 1 ultrasound 100% covered and the other one my insurance partially pays. Boo!

  • Okay. 20 week one is most important though, right?

You'd have to ask your doctor that. Definitely call your insurance company and ask all this now. I just had my first ultra and I wouldn't trade that for anything- it made the pregnancy feel real and more importantly, they could tell that everything measured and looked "normal." (Hate to say this but keep in mind a lot of this early screening and testing is in part so that if anything is abnormal, you can choose to legally terminate the pregnancy. If problems arise later, legal rights of yours and the fetus get super complicated.)

I know all my prenatal services are 100% covered. But that's standard prenatal stuff, whatever that means. For example, my doctor recommended genetic screening (but it's not mandatory for me). I found out my insurance won't cover that until my deductible has been met, so now I"m waiting on a call back from the genetics office to see what it'll cost me.

  • I don't know what you have insurance through but I have a plan through Kaiser. I don't pay co-pays for any doctor's visits or for ultrasounds and I don't get charged for an epidural. I do have to pay 250$ to give birth.

Yes it's definitely upto your insurance. Call them and see what's covered now so you don't end up with a bunch of surprise bills. For some reason in Germany with our insurance ultrasounds are covered during every appointment. I'm not sure why or how but I'm not going to complain.

  • I've actually never even heard of ultrasounds costing anything before. Unless you decided to go to an ultrasound place for a non-doctor related ultrasound. Like I pay about 100 dollars at a 4D ultrasound place to find out gender at 14 weeks.

My sister-in-law had to pay out of pocket after her first ultrasound. Her Dr billed them in a way her insurance could get away with not covering them. It definitely happens. Her insurance is super awful though so that's definitely part of it.
