Which brand

Pampers or huggies or favorite cloth diaper? I've bought two packs of each of the pampers and huggies and I'm trying to figure out which to stock up on when it comes to disposables. We plan to cloth diaper for the most part but would like some disposables to use every once in awhile.

  • I like pampers diapers, and huggies wipes. When we got to size 3, we switched to the target brand of diapers, which saved $$$ and were comparable to pampers IMO.

I have always preferred pampers. They just seem to hold everything in better. But it's totally a preference thing. You may be better off waiting until baby is here to see what he/she like before stocking up.
OOOOOH, this! I know sometimes babies are more sensitive to certain brands.

  • We use Luvs.  I wouldn't stock up on too many diapers before baby gets here.  Your baby may have sensitive skin, you may prefer one brand over another and you won't be able to tell that until you have been using them.

  • This answer can be different from child to child.  I agree with @aehogan90 that it may be best to start with only a few and go from there.  You'll hear people say they loved one or the other and others say their LO was allergic to one and not another, had blowouts in one and not the other, etc.

We cloth diapered and loved the BumGenius Freetimes for during the day and Sustainablebabyish OBFs for night. Once DD was potty trained, we used Huggies Pull-ups at night and she reacted to those but doesn't react to Pampers Easy-ups. Who knew?

  • I like pampers swaddlers for then they are tiny and huggies cruisers when they start moving. Huggies wipes for sure!

I'm a huggies momma. We got a bunch of pampers as gifts so we used them and it didn't seem to matter how I adjusted the gussets or made sure it was all secure she'd poop right out the back. The huggies had this really long poop catcher absorbency thing in the back and I had ZERO blowouts with my huggies. My nephew has the exact opposite and they were a pampers family. Hard to say which will fit better until you've got baby though.
But we are mostly a cloth family. I've got a full stash of bumgenius pocket aio, and a full stash of bestbottom shells with snap in inserts. Love my fluffbutt.

  • My sister swore by pampers with her daughter. They leaked horrible with my son.  Luvs broke him out. The target ones leaked awful.  We love huggies.

Fun info: when we registered and Babies r us, the lady told us to register for a couple brands, but that for some reason Huggies work better for boys and pampers for girls. Turned out to be true for us
  • Huggies worked for us when DS was first born. When he got bigger he leaked everytime and we switched to Luvs and he broke out. Now he's in pampers. So I totally get why you want to stock up but you don't know what's going to work for your baby. As for wipes. I like Huggies and pampers and the costco brand.

We use Pampers Swaddlers. I also think the Huggies new Lil Snugglers are pretty awesome. We use the Huggies One-and-Done wipes (I can't stand Pampers wipes, too thin, too small, etc).

We did try the Up & Up brand by Target, but they gave our daughter a rash.

Also, I tried the Honest Co. diapers. Not very absorbent, and didn't conture to my baby right. They also weren't very soft. I thought that especially for the price, they were a big disappointment.

    Edit - words are hard
  • Oh and wipes wise, since we cloth diaper, I made cloth wipes for at home. And out and about we used Huggies One and Done. Agree with others that the thicker the better on disposable wipes (especially after using thick cloth ones at home).

  • I agree with others who have said that every baby is different and preferences change. For disposables, we actually ended up loving the price and quality of the Sam's brand Members Mark (if you have a membership). We also used their wipes.

For cloth diapers, we loved thirsties prefolds for the newborn phase and bumgenius/blueberry pocket and All-in-ones.
  • When I was pregnant with DS everyone told me that Pampers was best for boys. I had several different brands by the time DS was born and ended up liking Pampers most. I have a coworker that swears that Costco brand diapers are basically Pampers at a lower cost. I will probably stick with Pampers but I plan on buying at least 1 box of the Costco brand. With the discounts from Amazon Prime Subscribe and Save, I doubt that Costco is much cheaper.

  • I loved targets up and up diapers for my first dd and kirkland/Costco wipes.

That said... I've heard different brands are better for boys to control leaks. And different brands different products used in making the diaper. Certain ones may irritate their skin. I personally wouldn't stock up on one brand or size.

  • Every single kid is totally different. We only use huggies because my daughter fits them best and she breaks out with other kinds.
But I've done a lot of babysitting and each kid was unique. It's weird to say, but they "fit" each kid a bit different

  • I used pampers in the newborn stage for both of my kids and then eventually switched to Kirkland brand (Costco).

  • I've also heard and read great things about the diapers at Aldi if you're looking for another more "economical" choice.

  • I liked pampers swaddlers! I use pampers cruisers for DS and prefer Huggies Over Nights. He leaks through the Pampers Over Night version. I am not sure if you are an Amazon prime member but if you are, the subscribe and save program gives you 20% off. I like that the diapers show up every month without me thinking bout it.
  • We used pampers swaddlers as a new born and infant. Once he was a year and more, we switched to huggies cruisers and overnights. Pampers leaked once he was around 1 and huggies leaked when he was a newborn. Very weird.
Wasn't a fan of target's brand. They smelled of urine too strongly to me.
Everyone in my area raves about Aldi's diapers bc they are so incredibly cheap. I might try for this LO
  • Also a fan of Amazon subscribe and save for diapers and wipes.
  • Thank you all! Probably just going to stick with what I have and put the rest on our registry so I'll wait until closer to baby to get them and they'll be easier to return if they don't work for baby. I stuck to small packs of diapers in case we have issues but the wipes are something that's constantly needed and even come in handy without a baby... I'm hoping we get at least a few cloth diapers from our registry so I can try them out and see what works in those as well for baby.

I used pampers with my son.  Tried huggies and he broke out in a rash after the first one so I donated the rest of the box.  Eventually I switched to the target brand because my Amazon subscribe and save orders were piling up and I could never figure out the right delivery schedule (every 6 weeks wasn't an option). The good news is that Babies R Us will take anything, including boxes of diapers purchased on Amazon.

I never noticed any leaks with him, blow outs sure but I think that's to be expected with any baby in any diaper. As long as his penis is pointing down in the diaper, there should be no difference in absorbency with that of a female.
  • Like everyone said, it really depends on the baby.  DS did fine in pampers and huggies, but we preferred pampers and still use them.  We also mostly use target diapers, never had an issue with them, but once your LO is big enough for overnight diapers, stick with the quality diapers.  We tried target overnights and LO leaked everywhere.

My in-laws also just bought huggies wipes on accident last week while we were on vacation, and DS ended up with a terrible rash.  It just varies from baby to baby.

  • I like pampers, but every baby is different. Some kids react better to huggies, luvs, target brand, Costco brand, honest co, etc. I wouldn't stock up this far in advance. The hospital will most probably give you plenty of pampers to start out with, and you can go from there. I respect your decision to use mostly cloth, but I'm assuming (and I can be wrong) that you have a lot of time on your hands, you are a FTM, and you don't completely know what that will entail. Good luck!
  • My daughter wore Pampers Swaddlers from birth until Pull-Ups time. There were a few blowouts if she had a major poop but were otherwise great. I made the mistake of getting a big package of Newborn size in advance for a baby who was born 8lbs, 13oz. So, unless you know your LO is going to be little, get some Size 1 and have someone grab Newborn size once you know you'll be using it.
