Starting IVF- no insurance coverage- loss mentioned

Hello. We have been TTC for 2 years with one loss about a year and a half ago. We have also done one IUI that was not successful. We met with our RE earlier this week and we are considering moving forward with IVF but we are self Pay for everything which quite frankly, sucks!! There is such a process and procedure in the RE's office that I can't get anyone to quote me a price on the cost of the meds. This will I'm sure, add thousands of dollars to the cost and I would like to know what they are. Can anyone give me some sort of ballpark figure?
Here is what I will be taking:
birth control pills- 3 weeks
any-gonal
cetrotide
ovidrel
progesterone.

Thats all I know from the sheet but I'm guessing there could be more. I'm a total IVF rookie. I'm still reading material every day to educate myself.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

TIA

Re: Starting IVF- no insurance coverage- loss mentioned

  • welcome to the board!  Sorry that you find yourself here, and sorry that you're having to self pay for all of this!  My DH and I are too, its overwhelming!

My RE's office quotes the meds at a range between $2500-5k on average for a cycle with ER and fresh transfer.  It all just depends on the dosage etc that they have you on and how well you respond to the meds/how long you have to be on them before the ER.  I know medication costs vary depending on where you live/who you fill through and if you have any coverage for medications (we're all OOP too but are still submitting the medications to insurance to see if by some weird happenstance they will cover any of them, like when I was on Femara they covered it bc it can be used for other things besides IF).  My RE's office will submit everything they do in the office to our ins bc they may cover some random parts of it (apparently our provider has always covered ultrasounds, which isn't much but hey any little bit helps).  I hope that info maybe helps? Good luck and I hope you and your DH have success with this whole process!

  • Thank you for your responses. I should also mention that we are considering using the PGS method when it comes to selecting the embryo. We are considerjng this because of our age. I'm going to be 38 in April and he's 45.
Any information anyone has on that would be appreciated.
  • My medications were $5600. Clomid, Gonal-X, Menapour, Ovidrel, and there is one other I was prescribed, but can not think of the name at this time. ( The medications should be arriving any minute!! eeeek!)

We are also doing the PGS screening. We are both only 28, but I felt for my nerves I wanted to ensure we were selecting a good embryo. The cost for the testing at my clinic was $2000 to my clinic and then I will owe $2000 to the lab actually performing the tests. Since the embryos will have to be frozen, there is another $2000 fee to unfreeze the embryo for transfer.

  • Stuuuaaart we are also planning on PGS testing, my dr recommended not doing a fresh transfer anyway since I'm at a high risk for OHSS so there would be a delay anyway, and the cost wasn't *that* much more in the grand scheme of things....I'm the "best" consumer.  When the price tag gets above a certain point I'm all "sure add on a few more thousand, what/s the difference at this point?".  I'm a salesperson's dream and my wallets nightmare....

  • Hi Stuuuaaart - I am totally thankful my insurance policy covered all 4 of my ivf's including meds. However-after looking at my insurance policy and all the charges, I can tell you that the meds would have cost $3,500 per cycle. Also, the progesterone really depends on what kind? I am doing PIO, and I know per vial, it could be very pricey. I wish you the best of luck- I also did genetic testing, my clinic made me pay 5k out of pocket for that.
  • Thank you so much for all your responses. It's a very complicated and emotional process. All your responses have made me feel better about PGS and has given me a better idea of meds cost
  • @Stuuuaaart We are out of pocket as well. We are using arc fertility for financing and their discount packages. Our package is $14305 and includes 1 retrieval and 2 transfers. The assisted hatching, biopsy, and pgs is additional and total is around $4000. Our meds for retrieval (gonal f, microdose hcg & cetrotide) are $2300 with 25% off through the compassionate care program. We are ordering meds through South Miami Pharmacy.

I would strongly suggest applying for compassionate care. We did not think that we would qualify but we did! My husband wrote a very detailed letter to include with our application and I don't know if it helped but it couldn't have hurt!

  • I was told to budget for $1000/day for meds for stims, but that average would be $500-$750/day. When I paid OOP for birth control 1 pack was $35-50 dollars. I paid $90 for a 10 days supply of progesterone. If you get a BFP you would likely take progesterone all through first tri so maybe $1000 total for progesterone.
At my old clinic IVF was $6500, IVF + ICSI was $8000, and IVF + ICSI + PGS was $13,500. Prices didn't include any medications and only covered 1 year of embryo storage.
  • @Stuuuaaart sorry that you find yourself here, but this is a great group of women that offer wonderful support. I took Menopur, Cetrotide, Gonal-F, and triggered with Lupron and HCG and it was about $4600. I will add though, that since my body responded more than they anticipated, I ended up not needing some of the cetrotide and menopur. If you can get a good deal and there is a specialty pharmacy in your area, I would see about ordering chunks at a time from them (as long as they are guaranteed to deliver on time). I think we have spent a total of $17k out of pocket for this cycle. That includes all the labs, IVF with ICSI, ultrasounds, FET, medicine, PGS testing and freezing/storage of embryos for 2 years. The rate that my clinic gave me, includes the second transfer free of charge, just in case my first FET doesn't produce a live birth. Also, my insurance did end up covering the estrogen patches and progesterone that i am currently on, so that is a bonus.

  • I hope no one is paying for birth control.....the government requires it to be FREE!!! If you are told you have to pay call your insurance and tell them it's illegal for them to make you pay for it! Obama made sure it was free for everyone years ago, but some companies are looking the other way and hoping you don't realize what they are doing is illegal.

  • @poemasque I think we pay $15 for birth control, but my husbands company is independently insured and are fully out of pocket. I believe they are paying the fine and covering the difference so that our rates aren't affected. Other than zero IF treatment, our health insurance is amazing *knock on wood*. It's $200/month for both of us with a $300 deductible.

  • I believe if a company is independently insured and not through Obamacare whatsoever, then they can do whatever they want? I could be (hope that i am) wrong. I don't pay anything for my birth control; i'm on my husband's insurance, it's about $350 a month (they only have an employee rate and a "family" rate, so we're already paying for kids that we don't have yet! ) but with $0 deductible
