XP: What to do about DCP and PTing DS (2.5 yrs)

We met with his teacher and she basically told me he's not ready.

We told her our plan was to do the 3 day PT method in July and we went over what it was, how we would use it, and what we hope the outcome would be. His teacher said that they look for more indicators of readiness such as saying when they're wet or have pooped (he tells us when he poops....not so much when he pees), taking off and pulling up shorts, and staying dry for longer periods of time (which he does...most mornings he wakes up dry and will usually be dry once or twice when we go to change him during the day).

So now, I don't know what to do. Do we try the method in July, see how it goes and if he does well, tell the DCP that method worked for us and that we expect him to be in diapers? Or do we just wait for him to give us more indicators that his interested. One of the things we're up against is that we're having baby #2 at the end of November, and while we know its definitely manageable to have two in diapers, we would love to not!

Any advice would be much appreciated! TIA!

  • I don't have any experience myself but I would say that mommy knows best.  I'm sure your DCP is great, but you have to trust your own instincts.

  • I'd wait until at least August or September.

I think your DCP has probably PT alot of kids and I would trust her judgement on this.

  • A lot of boys are not ready until age 3.  Having said that, even after he turned 3, he wasn't always asking to go but that didn't mean he wasn't ready.  Go with your gut and if you feel he is ready for the 3 day, do it.  If it doesn't work, take a break for a few months and try it again.  I wouldn't worry about DCP - they will work with you when he's ready to be PT.  If he goes to school in underwear, then they will just have to deal with it. Good luck!

This would be my thought too.

My DD trained early, and didn't exhibit a lot of signs-- mainly she didn't like to be poopy.  She would visibly be grunting and pooping and then immediately ask us to change her! Also other kids were training and she came home talking about underwear.

We didn't talk to DCP or ask-- we just took away the diapers and went bottomless on Saturday and most of a Sunday and then sent her in underwear and told them to take her every hour and use a diaper for nap (I know this goes against 3dpt, but it worked fine for us).  We also used M&M's and sent jellybeans to school  (again, against the 3dpt, but DD did fine and continues to do well).

Expect a lot of accidents at first, but don't give up unless you feel like he really doesn't get it.  You can always try again in a few months.

  • Thank you everyone for the input! I know that the DCP would support us with whatever we choose (the teacher actually gave me a handout that has their guidelines and the first thing said "we will comply with parents requests".

I guess we'll just table things for a little while, maybe try working with him more on recognizing when he's wet and such and then try the 3 day PT in August.

    Thanks again!

  • Our son wasn't showing many signs of readiness at all but his DC teacher wanted to try it with him (and three others around the same age).  They went cold turkey one Monday, we did the same at home and he was fully PT'd by the fourth day.  He was only 25 months when we did it and it has been smooth sailing ever since. Four months later he is almost ready to go diaper-free at night (I'm chicken).
