  • @Virginiaunicorn11 HOW DARE YOU!!!!! WERE YOU SPYING ON ME? I just ate a Wetzel's pretzel and a Dr Pepper. As my lunch.

At least I know I'm unhealthy AF.

BUT GUISE I had a spinach salad and steak for dinner last night and Kefir for breakfast....pat me on the back.
I couldn't find you a Dr. Pepper back pat, but thought you wouldn't mind this as a runner up

  • @dancegurl1118 Girl, you made me laugh with that "empowered by getting a cavity filled without Novocaine" comment! It's so true. Do some research, then do what you want and be proud of it, but medicated birth doesn't make you any less of a woman.
  • This girl the other day posted that having a c-section "deprives the baby of its natural birthday." I'd like to deprive her of a few of her teeth. What my c-section did was deprive my husband and parents of the obligation to plan two funerals.

@plumpous Same. Baby coming out of me? That's all fine, but giant needles in my spine, not so much. Plus, I don't do laying down, anything being numb freaks me out, and I want to be able to move and walk to get the baby out.
Also, every woman pick the birth you want and are comfortable with. No one should make you feel guilty about what you want, as long as you get your baby out healthy. But birthing centers (not home births) have better success rates than hospitals. In fairness, they also only do low risk births, so that's part of it too.
Maybe I just got lucky, but my legs were never numb or unable to move. You don't watch the epidural being put in(it's behind you and takes 10 seconds). I was able to walk after baby just fine. Maybe I just had the worlds greatest doctor but I have zero recovery from an epidural....and frankly didn't even know that was a 'thing'.

And it's not a crime to try to limit or prevent them.
  • @lovelee85 while some anesthesiologists are really quick, there are a lot that are pretty slow.   In general, epidurals take 10-30 mins to administer.   My epidural took 20 mins to do,  and it was brutal!
If yours truly took 10 seconds then you are very lucky!

Mine took ten seconds too, and I waited till the very last minute to get it, so I'm glad it didn't take long haha. Now I'm nervous! That would suck getting jabbed with that needle for 30 minutes.
  • LoveLee85 how many appointments do you have? I'm in NZ so it's totally different (also I'm IVF so I have extra scans).  Aside from 12 and 20 week scans I meet my midwife once a month till 7 months, then once a fortnight till 8 months, then once a week.
Once a month seems kind of reasonable, at least as a ftm. Maybe next time I'll be over it!

I am good friends with the President of the hospital and had the head of anesthesia do my epidural!! It was seriously under one minute and painless, amazing experience! I wish everyone who wanted one could have an experience like mine. I never even felt it being out in then he was in front of me talking and I said 'aren't you doing to finish doing it? He said he was already finished! I can't imagine 30 minutes?! Or even 20 minutes. I'm so sorry. I now realize I just got lucky. Yikes. ETA: maybe it was 2 minutes?? Idk but it was so fast I didn't even notice, but I was out of it.

Lurker here but I just want to add to what she said, mine took two hours! After an hour and a half they had to call the attending. If you want one don't wait too long is what I am saying lol

  • @mrscate88 wow that's amazing, you are so lucky!  Yes, it was the worst part of my entire labor! I'm not getting one this time around only because I seriously can't go through that experience again.   And mine didn't even fully work! I couldn't feel my contractions but I could feel everything from the top of my public area down.   My pubic bone felt like it was being ripped open for the last two hours of my labor!  I was sitting there the whole time kicking myself for even bothering with the Epi!
  • Yeah my epidural sucked. It was a full house (and full moon) and for some reason all of the anesthesia residents were gone that day leaving a CRNA who does crappy blocks and the attending who was doing scheduled c-sections. Guess who I got? I have scoliosis so it wasn't ALL their fault but...a crappy epidural is better than no epidural!
TTC: 1/2014 BFP: 9/24 EDD: 6/8/2015 Sorry for the poor man's siggy...ticker won't load regardless of how many tips I read.

Ugh, you poor thing, that suuuucks! I'm seriously so sorry it went down like that. No wonder some people are so against the epi.
  • If you're going to do _____________, it's safer to do it in a hospital than outside of a hospital. I mean, you could fill in the blank with just about anything. Childbirth, backflips, knitting a scarf, heroin... I won't complain about having doctors around.

  • Omg @alyeena what a nightmare!  So sorry you had to go through that!
  • I don't recall having to recover from having an epidural. That's a new one on me.

Also really dislike the misconception that epidural = giant needle. No, it's actually not very big. The thing running all the way up your back is a catheter and the needle is just used initially to thread it up there and then the needle comes out. It's never actually in you for more than a few minutes...not the duration of the epidural.

Damn girl, we got LUCKY!!!!!! I had no idea!!!!

  • @virginiaunicorn11, do I think there is anything wrong with encouraging others to eat healthy, no.  However, we don't know every persons situation.  Some people live in food deserts where they don't have access to an adundance of nutritional food at reasonable prices.  Some people simply to choose to eat the way they do for emotional or personal reasons and I feel like using terms such as "shoving crap down their throat" is not the way to get people to make healthier choices.
I have this friend. She eats super healthy, has her kids on a very strict all-natural diet. I admire her strength, it's hard work! But, she presents herself in such a superior way that it's a huge turn off. She's always posting online and saying very blunt and insulting things about everyone who eats ANYTHING that isn't organic, natural, plant based etc. If you're eating something unhealthy, she'll question you as you're putting it into your mouth. She's always saying "stop cramming crap down your throats and think about what you're putting in your body!" Eating healthy is good, important even, but there is a diplomatic way to help people understand that. And if someone isn't ready to listen, they aren't ready.
  • OMG to these epidural stories. Well now I am terrified.

Oh I have been 3 times already and I'm not quite 14 weeks. I'm a STM now with zero complications. I was over it half way with my DS. I just think if things are going good, why the mandatory two second, expensive as hell appointments?! lol I'm honeslty just bitching. I think I would be good with first initial visit, 20 week anatomy scan and check up, then toward the end 33 weeks + going more often, but it's so expensive and annoying when I have uncomplicated pregnancies. And don't get me started on waiting forever in the office just to get my weight and weather update from doc, since I never have issues. LOL

Totally agree. That was a statement individually responding to someone who missed my point entirely and went on the attack. An extreme example/employment of words to make a point.

My original post is not about judging others. It is not even about people's food choices. It is about the fact that as a community, we dance and squeal every time someone eats a whole cake - and we get the pitchforks if they show a bare belly, ask about a second baby shower, etc. I am only saying that it is my UO that I would rather see a culture that celebrates and promotes healthy eating.

PS, I shove junk down my own throat. Especially when I'm home alone and no one can see the force at which those Pringles hit my mouth.

I thankfully don't see it here that much, but it drives me insane when people use sex and gender interchangeably. Sex is biological, gender is a social construct. I have trans friends and people who conflate the two drive me nuts (this is also why I hate gender reveal parties).
I realize most people just don't think about it because they're used interchangeably so often (although incorrect). I saw one reveal on Pinterest and the cake said "we're here for the sex!" That made me laugh and feel proud of them haha.
@leilac you know I noticed no one jumped on the NT scan and gender thread title - just thought this group was particularly chill about such things.  It normally would cause an uproar on the boards.
  • Home birth is dangerous?? LOL.  Let's not overreact.  Believe me, no midwife who didn't want to lose her license would EVER agree to take on a woman who was not a totally safe case, and close enough to a hospital for an emergency.  Ladies, stop pushing this idea that birth is a medical event!  This is how so many unnecessary inductions/c sections occur.  If you prefer a medical environment that is totally ok.  Don't shame women for not wanting to be in a hospital.  There is no need to be in a hospital if you have had an uncomplicated pregnancy.  We live in a time where there could be a fantastic meeting of the old world and the new.  Educate yourselves.
Hmmm. Pregnant women going to a medical enviroment is not why there are so many inductions/csections. Let me tell you about my pregnancy, I had an uncomplicated pregnancy. I had no problems, other than low iron but I had that pre-pregnancy, but please tell me (since your a pregnancy expert) why my uncomplicated low risk pregnancy ended with an emergency CS? I was induced at 40w2d, I had been to the hospital 3 times during that week for contractions 2 minutes apart, for which I was sent home. We'll let me tell you why mine ended in an emergency CS bc my DD's cord was wrapped not once but twice around her neck. So yes, there was a fucking need for me to be in a hospital. Educate yourself.
  • Epidurals also terrify me.  It's not the needle; it's the concept of having a tiny hose that goes into my spinal cord.  No thanks; I'll take the Spinal every time.

I'm also in camp "If there weren't cesareans, I'd be dead so many times, and so would my kids." so I'm all about modern advances in medicine.  From a genetics standpoint, I wonder if we'll see the need for cesareans increase over time.  Women with body types/medical complications that resulted in death just a few generations ago are now procreating (sometimes multiple times) potentially passing those complications down to further generations.

Not a UO, but for some reason I'm missing a lot of the posts on this thread.  There are a few posters who have clearly posted multiple times, but I can only see their content when it's quoted by someone else.  I've never put anyone on Ignore, so I'm not really sure what's going on here.  If someone ignores me, can I no longer see their stuff?  And it's not as though it's a blank post; it's as though the post is completely skipped.

  • @xath that was the exact same with me! I am not squeamish or afraid of needles at all, so it wasn't the initial "shot" in the back during the epi that bothered me-  it was feeling the catheter tube digging around in my spine for 20 mins that was beyond horrific!

It must be a 'bump' issue, because weirdly I'm missing some things that are in quotes(it's the only way I can see them). I haven't blocked anyone!

Yeah; I'm not sure.  The one I can tell definitely is @AdaByron Are you blocking me intentionally?  (I super don't mind either way -- just trying to figure out if this is a technical issue I should be reporting to TB).   Also, someone might have to tell me if she responds because....I see nothing.
