Winter coat suggestions?

Winter is here (for some of us) whether we want to believe it or not and I just got my coat back from the cleaners and it doesn't fit anymore. I can barely zip it over my belly and my chest and I need to find a coat like yesterday. Since we all will be pregnant during the winter season, I'm looking for advice on what type of coat I should get given that our bellies will be growing over the next few months. Thanks

Re: Winter coat suggestions?

  • As much as I hate Arizona, I guess it makes me lucky in this case. I'm still wearing my favorite, adorable long pea coat from Forever 21 I got last year. I'm not sure if it still zips, but I don't need to zip it here. I did see Nordstrom and Motherhood had some cute maternity coats!
Could you just layer and leave your jacket unzipped? Guess that depends where you live.

  • I got a super warm Motherhood Maternity down coat from swap.com for $15! That site and thredup.com have some pretty good deals on maternity stuff (and baby stuff).

  • I have a boxy duffle coat that I'm banking on working for the rest of the year. It looks a lot like this. It still has plenty of room zipped up and I think it looks good open if/when I outgrow it. I'll likely just layer up a bit more and add a scarf. But I don't commute via walking/public transportation, so that works for me. I thought about buying a maternity coat, but ended up buying a second duffle coat because I know it will work after the babe, too. :-)

  • I am in the same boat. It is cold and getting colder every day here. I ended up ordering this on a cyber monday sale and it should arrive today. Fingers crossed it fits! I am having the most trouble with my boobs fitting into my coats right now. I am normally flat chested so my coats have no room for these ladies that have arrived up stairs. I also own a houndstooth swing coat that will accommodate a bump as long as my boobs will still squeeze into it.

  • I found a maternity coat on Zulily a month or so ago.  Zulily can take forever to ship, but if you can manage for a bit, its another good option for discounted maternity clothes (and baby stuff too!).

Last pregnancy my due date was 12/1 so I just wore one of H's coats for the last month or so.  It wasn't very flattering, but it helped my cheap ass avoid buying a maternity coat.  That is also an option for any ladies who can layer most days and but will occasionally need something that can be zipped (I'm in Colorado where our weather jumps back and forth between 65 and sunny and freezing and blizzard all winter long so there were plenty of days even in November last year where I was fine with a sweater and an jacket unzipped).
  • @kipperoo  That coat makes me wish I lived some place colder.

  • I gor the faux fur trimmed coat from Pea in the Pod and I really like it. I also ordered several style of Kimmi and Kai coats through Nordstrom but they are tents and don't really size down well for early and mid pregnancy so I sent them all back.

  • I'm in Washington state so we aren't really supposed to get snow, but freezing rain a lot and I'm just hoping I can make it through with my same coats! I don't mind if it doesn't zip, I'll just add scarves lol

The Boston winters can be no joke. In my mind, wearing cozy layers and drinking a hot latte sounds so dreamy. In reality, it's a cold, wet mess and I have zero natural balance, so I'm typically slip-sliding around trying to keep from falling and spilling said latte. I'm jealous of anyone who doesn't need to think about heavy coats.
I grew up in the Midwest so I totally know that feeling.  In reality, there's usually 1 beautiful picturesque fall day and then it's crap until May.

  • @NotAPlaya-JustCrushAlot, yes that is totally accurate. January through April is the absolute worst. I'm just glad my maternity leave doesn't fall during those months. Hoping for an early and gorgeous spring! :-)

I'm not even in the bad winter area and I'm already over the multiple layers, hats, jackets on then off in the car seat then on again... I'll never complain about a warm Arizona winter again!

I'm actually counting down the days til we are home in Arizona for the holidays and saw today that it's a 40° difference in temperature! I think I'll need to pack my shorts lol

OMG...don't even get me started on the car seat dilemma. Bundling my 2 year old to literally walk to the car and un-bundle him, only to re-bundle him at daycare. INSANE. He used to just put up with the cold (yep, mom of the year right here, but it's a super fast walk), but now he complains and pitches a fit until I put his coat on.

  • I have no idea what to expect here in NC since its our first winter but I've been told that a coat isn't necessary here. Either way I have seen nice gently used coats for a good price on local b/s/t groups if that's something you're comfortable with. I just bought a heavy cardigan that I can wrap around my belly and will just layer with an unbuttoned coat.

  • @Kipperoo I'd take it all! Seriously. I miss winter so so much.

  • @kipperoo that's what we do!  Sometimes I'll kind of wrap his coat around him but it just doesn't seem worth the effort to put the coat on for a 25 second walk from the car into daycare.
  • @Kipperoo I totally just put a hat on them and say "walk fast!" I bring a jacket and just tuck it around their legs so they aren't super cold but it's a pain! Infants are so much easier because you can bundle them up inside and carry their seat out!

  • @kipperoo We go back to the Midwest for either Thanksgiving or Christmas each year.  I'm totally guilty of running the kid from houses to vehicles without the coat properly on.  I get so annoyed with my SIL that puts my niece in her (wrong) carseat with a puffy winter coat. I know she knows it's wrong. I always loudly comment on making sure DD isn't wearing her winter coat in her carseat.

  • Motherhood maternity has a puffy coat with a removable panel that I asked for for Christmas. The panel can also flip the other way and accommodate a baby carrier so I'm excited to try it out this winter and next winter :)
  • I actually just went to Burlington Coat factory and got a really warm coat in a M (since I usually get a small). I only spent $35. It almost fits me like a LG.

  • Following. My coat is definitely getting snug. I looked at a few coats in the tiny Motherhood Maternity section in Macy's, and I wasn't impressed. (I didn't see the one with the removable panel, though.) Some were glorified sweatshirts, and the puffy ones had artificial down that didn't feel warm at all. I'm hoping to score something nice and warm on my local swap group. Otherwise, I may just size up on a regular coat. I much preferred being pregnant in the summer!
  • @CarmCeG That's a good idea, I might try that. I was looking online (Destination Maternity, Gap, etc), and the only one I liked was nearly $200. There's no way I want to spend that much for a coat that I might only wear for a season.
  • @starphish18 Originally my MIL took me shopping to maternity stores & insisted on buying me warm coat. I took a look at a few and the prices were ridiculous!! I have never spent more than $50 on a coat.

  • I just bought a great pea coat that has a high neck and reaches down to mid thigh from Old Navy. On sale it was $45. I'm not a faux fur person and it can go with anything.

  • I went up two sizes when I got a coat. It fits perfect.
  • I just go up in sizing when I'm pregnant that way I can wear it while losing the pregnancy weight and it won't fit funny. Plus maternity clothes are more expensive than regular clothes .

  • I live in MD, and it gets very cold here, but not for an extended time.  I think I might get a huge cheap coat at a thrift store.  Not the classiest, but seems silly to buy a Maternity coat for like 2-3 months of use... Right now I can squeeze into my normal winter coat since it's a fairly boxy style and I sized it to fit over chunky sweaters.

  • This is my third pregnancy and my second time being super pregnant during the winter in MN.  I found a great maternity coat at a thrift store for $10 a couple of weeks ago and am so happy I got it.  I'm kicking myself for not biting the bullet and buying a nice $50ish winter coat last time.  I bought one a size up and it mostly worked, but this one REALLY works!  Live and learn.  Even for one pregnancy it would be worth it here since winter lasts 5 months and honestly it's not too obvious that it's a maternity coat.  I will probably wear it other years.

  • I'm in western NC and we definitely need a winter coat here (tomorrow's high is 35/low 18!) and I spend a lot of time outdoors. I'd love something made with warm down so that I can hike in it, but I haven't seen any maternity coats in person that actually seem like they'll be warm enough. I might try just buying a larger non-maternity coat. My usual coat won't zip over my belly and chest already. I did try a local consignment shop recently, but they had a very disappointing maternity section.

Where did you see that?! I have the same coats for my girls and I can not imagine it being ok in the car seat, it's really puffy!

  • I just bought a plus size coat from Lane Bryant that is sort of boxy so that way it will fit for a few months to come.  Not fitted is the way to go!
  • Hey everyone...first post ever! (about to speak up the "lurkers" thread and have my EDD added to the spreadsheet).

Here is an option I wish I knew about before jamming myself into my existing coat, causing the pockets to rip apart.
    https://makemybellyfit.com/
To me, the money is worth it to keep your regular coat. Of course, I can't speak to how well it works, but I know I like products that make regular clothing work for pregnancy. Being short makes maternity clothes hard, no matter how much I'm showing now.

I broke down and got a bigger coat from Nordstrom Rack, as by now, everything is picked over and I wasn't in the mindset to pick something new that I'd want to keep for next year as well to go with the extender.

  • @slevenst Interesting! I've never heard of this, but this is pretty cool. And I like that there's an option to fit a baby in there too. Unfortunately my coats have buttons but I'm impressed nevertheless!

  • I generally hate second hand stores, but there was no way I was going go pay all that money for a new jacket. I went to Goodwill and got a heavy peacoat for only $15. I can still fit into my brand new coat from last year for the time being, but I'm glad to know that I have that other jacket when the time comes!
