I eat pretty much the same as not pregnant. Stil eat lunch meat and I had sushi once. I don't eat soft cheese regularly so that's not an issue. I also don't drink alcohol so I'm good there. The only difference is I drink only one ice tea a day and occasionally have one of the small Starbucks frappachinos in a bottle from the grocery. I try to limit my caffeine more.
I'm not strict at all. I'm confused about the cheese thing though. Unpasteurized cheese is banned in the US so I don't know why people keep saying only pasteurized? That's the only kind available, unless traveling outside of the US.
I feel like I've definitely seen unpasterized cheese. (I could be wrong and possibly messing this up with the unpasterized OJ at the check out lines of Wegmans.) And (clearly this isn't the case here since we are all using technology) but there are definite cultures within the US who don't pasteurize their stuff like the Amish. Now I'm curious as to what they do! LOL
I live in Vermont, a big dairy state, and we have tons of unpasteurized cheese here. Basically my doctor said to limit it (I'm a big brie fan), and only from trusted sources I haven't gotten sick from before.
My motto is follow my cravings. I only avoid hard liquor and high mercury fish (eg Tuna). Other than that... I eat all the things. Sushi? Had it last night (yum!). Soft cheese? Yes please! Wine? Once in the second tri, I definitely allow myself a small glass of wine on occasion (eg holidays, special occasions, epic toddler meltdown days). My IVF doctor literally said to me "Look at the diet of women around the world while pregnant and you'll see many eat foods that our society 'forbids'. Be careful about where your food comes from and keep things in moderation. You'll be fine."
With my first pregnancy, I was so paranoid about listeria. I avoided all deli meats (and that is the one thing I craved - turkey sandwiches). I even went to the extent of ordering food to go - like salads, and going home to wash the lettuce upon eating it. I know, wow. Haha! This time around I am much more laid back. I'm eating sushi (from nice places), limiting mercury fish, drinking one cup of coffee a day and eating deli meat! I'm avoiding hummus again this pregnancy because there was a listeria recall with sabra during my first pregnancy and then again this one. I still won't drink wine, I just can't get myself too. I know I would feel guilty. But I definitely don't judge others for it!
I've avoided the "no no foods" so far, but it hasn't really disrupted my regular diet. I hardly ever eat sandwiches, and I love soft cheeses, but I've seen way fewer unpasteurized than pasteurized varieties. My doctor was happy for me to have 2 cups of coffee each day, so while I've tried to cut back a bit on caffeine, definitely still drinking it daily.
I don't eat cold lunch meat. If I want a sandwich I will heat the meat up really well first. I love sushi but haven't given in to my cravings. Overall, I have just been eating my normal meat, potatoes and veggie meals like before. I don't drink caffeine ever just because it makes my heart race. I'm more of the, my mother and grandmother ate what they wanted, when they wanted when they were pregnant and their kids are fine, type of person. My cousin didn't abide by any strict eating guidelines and has two healthy kids.
I have 1 pop a day.usually a 20oz bottle or fountain drink wherever I am getting lunch. That's very little compared to before! I haven't had deli meat even though I love subway! I know I can get it toasted but I never used to so I haven't tried it yet. We are going to a sushi place on Xmas eve and I'll get a cali roll, maybe a shrimp tempura roll too! I won't be drinking alcohol at all mainly because DH doesn't drink and would freak out if I did. If the situation were different I might have a glass of wine once in awhile. I also declined cookie dough even though I really wanted it!!! My diet hasn't been the healthiest but at least it's not all carbs anymore!
The only thing I have completely eliminated is alcohol, but I'm sure I will have some sips when I get to 3rd trimester. Lunch meat I don't have very often, but I hear it up if I remember. Sushi I haven't had yet, but I might go get some for lunch! I love Philly rolls which are smoked, so I feel like it's ok. I have had ceaser salads, but it didn't have raw egg. Caffine is probably where I should get flamed the most. I usually have 1 Dr. Pepper a day, but if I have a bad headache I will drink 2-3. I agree with the just being smart, washing fresh fruit and veggies, and keeping everything in moderation.
Love this. The only thing my MD really told me to avoid were the cured deli meats like prosciutto and salami. I have eaten other deli meats, 1-2 caffeinated drinks per day, and will have a small glass of wine on New Year's and maybe some other occasions now that I am out of the first tri. The brie I bought for Christmas is pastuerized anyway, but I have had my share of other soft cheeses and sushi. I have avoided high mercury fish. I'm all about moderation.
I have my one 10oz cup of coffee every morning. If I don't have that, I allow myself a Coke Zero. I eat sub sandwiches, but I just take the meat out and heat it up. I plan to have my half glass of wine sometime this holiday season. I eat sushi, but I stick to California rolls and cooked eel. With DD, MH wanted me to stay away from anything not organic, which I so didn't. I almost divorced him for this. Overall, I'm much less paranoid about eating this time around.
I've been pretty good with staying away from the foods we are suppose to. I never have really liked lunch meat, sushi, or hot dogs anyway... Although, one of my friends just had her first baby Oct 27th and I feel like she is constantly trying to smack foods out of my hand. *eyeroll* She wouldn't let me have Mexican because she says the queso isn't safe. I'm pretty sure a Mexican restaurant here isn't giving everyone unpasteurized cheese.. She also lectured me for having cooked feta. I think I'm going to only eat with my DH for awhile before I let my hormones get the best of me. Lol
I avoided coffee for most of the 1st tri but I couldn't take it so started having chai lattes towards the end and have one almost every day. It keeps me sane. Last pregnancy my #1 craving was deli sandwiches and I was ignorant to the listeria threat, since I took such a risk last time, I now have to heat up all deli meat that I have. I haven't really had a taste for any no no foods, but if I get a craving I will most likely fill it(within reason), just so I don't go crazy.
When I was experiencing morning sickness and getting sick every day the only thing that sounded good most days was a turkey sandwich so I ate all of the turkey sandwiches. I tried heating up the meat once and the smell made me sick so I never did it again. You gotta do what you gotta do sometimes.
That is the only no-no food I've indulged in though. Unless potato chips became a banned food that I wasn't aware of?
@TGmomtobe90 cooking the feta would kill the bacteria. Your friend sounds like a peach. Every time she tells you what you should and shouldn't be eating tell her how she's caring for her baby incorrectly.
I have no idea how potato chips got in to this discussion.. I really hope they aren't newly banned because chips off all types are one thing I can't really lay off right now. I have had a couple small cubes of unheated salami.. that's the worst I've done I think. I'm sure I will be adding to that list as the months go on.
I limit myself to a small cup of coffee a day. I'm generally avoiding deli meats and soft chees, especially if I'm out at a restaurant or at someone's house (I'm not sure of the source/how long it's been out). I've had (cooked) sushi once so far. And a small glass of wine. I tend to get a bit more lax later in pregnancy, at least aim did with DD.

I've had two prior losses and I know that has really affected my choices in early pregnancy. Some of my food choices are rational and some are a bit superstitious.
so i met my OB for the first time today since transferring from my RE and her exact words "most of the stuff you hear about what you cant do is bullshit" she went on to tell me she ate sushi a lot with her pregnancy b/c it was one of the few things she could eat, lunch meats just get reliable higher quality stuff and dont microwave it. if you are worried about listeria...dont eat (exactly what she said) its been in hummus and ice cream so there is no way to predict where it will come out you just need to be smart about where you buy the stuff. made me happy to hear
I have been extra paranoid due to my previous miscarriage. I quit coffee and alcohol. I've had maybe 2 sodas so far. No sushi or rare steak, no cold cuts of any kind unless heated. Buuuuut the other day I broke down and had a few cold pepperoni and salami slices because I went to my dad's for Christmas eve and they had that with crackers and cheese out for snacks. I could not resist!!
My guilty pleasure is caffeine. I'm still having about 6oz of coffee in the morning after my OB said to try drinking something with caffeine for the headaches I've been getting. And I wake up every freaking morning with a headache.
Other than that I play it extra cautious with everything. I'm just already so worried something will go wrong (thanks PGAL brain!) I don't need anything else to worry about. I definitely don't need to be awake at 3am wondering if the sub I got from Firehouse gave me Listeria or something. But I have pre-existing Generalized Anxiety Disorder pre-pregnancy and with PGAL brain also it just makes sense to me to try to reduce my anxiety where I can. Also: most of the things on the "no no" list were things I didn't like before pregnancy. So it isn't a big sacrifice. I do miss my Firehouse Subs, the occasional beer, being bad and sampling the raw cookie dough and things like that. But I never ate sushi, the "bad" cheeses or whatever else anyhow.
