Dying hair during pregnancy

hi ladies..   do you plan on dying your hair during pregnancy?

i have a friend that was going to give me unicorn hair in January..   after researching, and because I'm only dying my hair once, I was thinking of still doing it.

any STMs dye their hair all throughout their last pregnancy?

Re: Dying hair during pregnancy

  • I dyed mine 2x during my last pregnancy. The doctor said it's not good to bleach or go super dark.  That said, my sister is on her 2nd pregnancy as well and though both has hilighted  her blonde hair every 6 weeks through both.  There are lots of natural colors out there like Aveda and Provena (spelling?) so it may be safe.

My last pregnancy I kept doing my highlights every 6 weeks and will do the same with this pregnancy.
Thats awesome that ur thinking of doing unicorn hair!
  • @tripledaggerWed95976 I'm torn, because I was really excited about it, was getting it at cost because she wanted a photo of the hair for her portfolio, but it would require my whole head to be lifted..   so that's a lot of chemicals..   I think I'd feel safer just doing highlights or a glaze or something...  but haven't fully vetted out my comfort level.
  • @peedy I definitely hear what ur saying.  I am pretty cautious with most things during pregnancy so I would be really torn about it too!     Maybe ask ur doctor?   During my last pregnancy I started just asking my doctor if I was nervous about something.   It always put my mind at ease
  • My doctor told me it's safe to dye my hair during pregnancy.

  • @Knottie1430947838 good to know!  Even bleaching the whole head?
  • They didn't go into specifics really but told me it's safe to dye hair and to get manicures. Since I get both, I'm very glad.

  • I used bleach on my hair with my first pregnancy, just ask they don't let it touch your scalp. Just make sure the salon is well ventilated
  • I'm a FTM, but I have galaxy hair and no intention of letting it go throughout my pregnancy. I had my hair re-bleached at 5w using foils, and I redo the color every 8 weeks normally.
I'm not sure exactly what unicorn is, but definitely be prepared for a lot of maintenance!

  • I've heard it's most harmful during the first trimester. Maybe you could wait another month or so?

  • @secicc12 these are examples of unicorn hair...   even though dying is safe..   I think I'm going to cancel my appt...   I have anxiety (that I'm currently not taking meds for while pregnant), and I'll just be a worry wart.
  • @Peedy SO pretty! Thanks for explaining.. something to look forward to after LO arrives

  • This is an old study ~2008. But anything published from NCBI is reputable. Check out page 7. It's typically pretty safe anymore particularly if you use a semi permanent but your stylist should know what chemicals will be used and you can further research. I am going to ask my stylist since she went through the same dilemma herself not too long ago and does funky colors. I've had a lot of fun Joico colors in my hair at various times of my life so I am also going to have to make that same decision.

  • My stylist uses mostly aveda and pureology products and says they are perfectly fine for use during pregnancy. She has been pregnant twice since I have been going to her and had no issues applying them on a daily basis and I have my hair highlighted at minimum every 10 weeks and had no issues with my last pregnancy. I have an appt this next week and cannot wait!  So I personally don't think it's a big deal like the above post says. Plus that unicorn hair is SO cute!!!
  • <div>Many expectant mothers continue coloring their hair during pregnancy, especially when choosing lower-chemical options. Highlights or balayage are often preferred since they keep dye away from the scalp, and ammonia-free or semi-permanent formulas are commonly discussed as a gentler choice. Timing after the first trimester and ensuring good ventilation at the salon are also typical precautions people follow, along with checking in with a healthcare provider when unsure.

</div><div>Hair care routines often get extra attention during pregnancy due to changes in texture and shedding, so gentle accessories and protective styling can help keep things manageable. Soft hair ties, satin wraps, and scalp-friendly tools from Bundle Head(bundlehead.com) such as silk bonnets and friction-reducing accessories are often chosen to help reduce breakage and maintain hair health while styling or coloring decisions are being made.

</div><div>Unicorn hair can be a fun and expressive choice, and many continue with creative color work during pregnancy by sticking to safer application methods and professional guidance. The key usually comes down to comfort level, product choice, and making informed decisions that balance personal style with peace of mind.</div>
