Re: PaIF December Multiples Mamas Check In

  • I'll be 21 weeks tomorrow with my three littles! I've been calculating my dates wrong for months, so we're trying to make it to March 10th, which will be 34+6.

I'm wondering if any of your doctors have given you any sort of restrictions on activity or guidelines as to when/if they might.

  • I will be 15 weeks on Sunday with twins. We are aiming at 38 weeks which will be May 14th.

My doctor hasn't given me any restrictions except lifting over 20-25 lbs. They haven't mentioned anything about restrictions. Although, my physical therapist said if my body keeps up the way it is, I will not be very mobile when I start getting even bigger due to my hips.

  • @AandDM2014 - yeah... but it it means they are growing! I never thought that hip pain and walking would be my biggest complaint of pregnancy. In an odd way I feel thankful for it, my body is adapting almost too well to make them comfortable and cozy.

The doctors appointments keep adding up though. Only restriction was carrying things other then that they told me to walk as much as I can and take naps when needed and elevate my feet
  • @ultratomato Oh my gosh, that is so exciting!! I bet it's great to have the day you get to meet your LOs in place!

    @ultratomato how exciting!!

I'm @ 12+weeks. DD 06/14/17. Originally the NP told me I'd have to have a c-section, like natural wasn't even an option. (I want a vaginal birth) Met with OB and she thinks that so long as Twin As head is down shouldn't be a problem. Some dr.'s want both babies head down to do natural but she said she's not particular. Naturally I won't know for sure until closer to my due date. Don't know the genders yet. I think private-for-a-fee facilities advertise that they can do it as early as 14 weeks. I wonder if its different with twins since they tend to be smaller and in a tighter space. I don't want to wait until I think 20 weeks when my OB will do it.
  • @Janejane - I think you can find out earlier than the 18-20 weeks scan. I am not so patiently waiting for mine on 12/30 where I will be almost 19 weeks. I'm ready to know to get the nursery and registry going. My ob also said if they are both heads down I could do natural but she said that baby B could change when baby A comes out and she won't let me deliver a breach baby so I would deliver one natural and one c-section.

  • @JaneJane How cool that your OB might let you try vaginal birth! It is definitely possible with twins! We found out the sexes when I was 15+2. At that stage they're still the same size as a singleton would be. Its really only toward the very end that they start to differ from singletons. My Bump app tells me that at 20 weeks baby is about 10.5 ounces and on Monday when I was 20+2 mine were measuring at 11 and 12 ounces.

  • @AandDM2014 I do agree my babies weigh more then some singletons at this point. My ob said that twins are more developed then singletons each week which I thought was crazy. I think my girls are running out of room
  • Hey all! 32 weeks here.
The restrictions I had were lifting and standing on my feet for too long. I can't remember the specifics (as in weight and minutes) but those were pretty much the only restrictions given to me.
@JaneJane I don't know if you're going to a perinatologist or not but I was given an anatomy scan at 16 weeks.
Also I guess Ob's differ, but they should allow you to make a decision as to what you want whether it be vaginal or c-section. I was given different options, and my OB said it's entirely up to me and how my labor progresses when the time comes.

  • @ultratomato It's definitely a good thing that multiples seem to develop a bit faster than singletons. I'm pretty sure mine have all been ahead of what the "norm" is each time they are measured, which helps ease my worry for them!

Thanks ladies for the input!! Fingers crossed for a vaginal but whatever is best for babies.

@AandDM2014. When you found out at 15 weeks 2 days was this at a regular dr's visit or did you go to a private 3D/4D facility?

@WishingforLuck. I have my first perinatologist appointment this week I believe. Don't know if there will be a scan. Hopefully so even if its not as thorough as an anatomy scan which I don't I'm doing for a few more weeks.
  • @JaneJane I only see an MFM, also called a perinatologist, so for me it was at a regular doctors visit. Since I get scans every two weeks, I don't plan to do any private ones. At your appointment this week with your MFM you will definitely get a scan. I would be thoroughly shocked if you didn't, since that is kinda the point of seeing them.

  • I feel a bit lost on the OB/GYN vs. MFM/Perinatologist. Do all of you go to a MFM/Perinatologist? I just have a regular OB/GYN and no one has ever suggested otherwise. Should I be going to a high risk doctor?

  • I see an MFM exclusively because I'm with triplets. I'm pretty sure most twins see an OB exclusively, unless you're of AMA. You should see an MFM for your AS, but I think everyone sees an MFM for ASs, no matter how many they're having. @kelrauh

  • @kelrauh Yeah, MFMs do more schooling specific to pregnancy and high risk pregnancy than OBs do, so any high riskers see them instead. I asked mine if I should be seeing an OB too, because I read of some ladies doing that, but he said they'd do similar but less things, so there is no point in me seeing both. I know I'm a special case compared to everyone else here though. Hopefully some of the other ladies will chime in with their experiences!

  • @kelrauh I have been seeing an MFM from the beginning every 4 weeks I'm 35 but I don't think it's my age is the reason why I have to go to MFM I believe it's twins. I would ask your OB about it.
  • @kelrauh  I mainly with my OB but she wants an MFM to see me periodically. I think its standard at my hospital when there are twins.
  • @kelrauh  I mainly go to an OB but see my perinatologist in between visits with my OB. My peri did my anatomy scans, and all other detailed scans. As well as checking growth and cervix. Like JaneJane says I think its standard practice for my doctor to send anyone with multiples to a peri.

@JaneJane I believe they'll do a scan for you at your appointment this week.

  • Hello everyone! I'm 21 weeks today after IVF/FET with di/di twin girls. We had our anatomy scan on Monday and it was amazing. Girls look good and no need for formal echo. Our plan is induction if baby a is head down or c section at 38 weeks. Not seeing MFM except for ultrasound reviews (in the same office with my Ob).

@kelrauh - the body pillow has helped with my hip and back pain. Also doing yoga and everything always feels better after. And acupuncture, started during iuis and ivf. Have also heard that chiropractor may really help. I hope you find some relief!

@ultratomato - so exciting knowing your delivery is so close!

  • @Happydays13 Thanks! I thought it would be great for those of us who are having a unique experience to be able to connect with each other. I'm part of a private group and I'm the only multiple mama, so having you ladies to connect with has been awesome! I too am a bit surprised by the amount of energy I've had. Earlier this trimester I needed to nap 3 hours a day, plus be in be for like 9 hours a night just to feel somewhat normal, and now most days I can make it through without a nap! I have a feeling that'll change in the coming weeks, but whatever these babies need (even if it's ice cream and pizza!!)!

  • Hi everyone. It might be a bit premature for me to be posting in this thread, but I just had my first ultrasound today (6w5d) after IVF/FET and we saw two little ones in there. My RE said that Baby A is measuring a little behind at about 6 weeks 0 days and a heart rate of 117, and Baby B is measuring pretty much on target with a heart rate of 127. So she said that this could mean it's possible that baby A won't survive, or it's also possible that they will catch up and be fine. Just wondering if anyone else had any experiences with this and how it turned out. Thank you!
  • @HopefulLily Welcome to our group! Mine all measured differently most of the time. At my second MFM appointment, one was measuring at 12+6 while one measured at 14. They've since all pretty much caught up. It's definitely possible, or one may just stay smaller than the other the entire time. Growth over a period of time is more important than just one scan!

  • @HopefulLily- I am 16 weeks with twins. At my first appointment they were measuring a few days apart from one another. Then by 9 weeks they were pretty close to one another now they are about the same. I wouldn't worry about it at this stage, its hard to get a good measurement when they are that small.

I'm feeling pretty great so I'm still waiting for the symptoms to start. The news is still slowly sinking in, so i don't have many questions yet, but I'm sure that i will soon.

  • @HopefulLily I had my first U/S with twins around the same time as you, 6 weeks and a few days. One twins heartbeat was at 116 and the other 126. I don't recall if they were measuring the same,I think they were a day apart. My ER was very happy with that first U/S gave me no indication that anything was wrong. Told me that miscarriage rate goes down substantially after a heartbeat is heard. Our second U/S was scheduled for two weeks later. So far so good. Fingers crossed for all us.
  • So I got the stupidest question from someone at a store yesterday the girl asked if I was surprised with twins or was it planned. Sorry but I don't tell strangers that I went through iVf it's none of their business. I just said i was happy. Luckily for me my FIL is a twin so I say that's where the twins come from if I get asked if twins run in the family which always comes up it's so annoying I'm just waiting for the stupid or rude questions once they are born
  • @ultratomato - when I tell people we are having twins I feel like that is the first question I am asked. I am also a twin so I get out of it by saying I am a twin. A lot of times that leads into more questions and people being more intrusive lol.

I am personally very open and don't mind sharing my story, but it still seems odd to ask someone you don't know if they naturally ovulated two eggs or if it was a random split or if a doctor caused them to have multiples. So odd.

  • @ultratomato UGH! I hate hate hate intrusive questions like that. Its no ones business especially a stranger. We've only told our MIL (b/c that was the first Q out of her mouth when she found out we were expecting). I thought I would tell my family & friends but as the news spread I just didn't feel the need. I tend to be a private person (so is my husband). No shame in IVF but still, I don't want to share our medical history with everyone.
  • I'm glad you ladies understand. I have shared my journey with friends but if your a stranger I'm not sharing the story. I also get asked all the time if they are identjcal
or not I'm like does that matter plus they would only know with a DNA test
  • I am a twin and i get asked if my brother is my identical twin. People aren't very knowledgeable on twins, I get asked stupid questions and I'm sure i will hear even more with being a twin mom.

Im only seeing an OB too, but it was suggested by a friend to see a perinatalogist. Not sure whether to look into it or not. I got back to my OB next Tuesday but I hate talking about that stuff with him, I feel like he gets offended- so annoying.

I have been curious, when did you all start showing? I feel like I am bigger than I should be lol
I obviously don't have a big belly at 10 week but I definitely see a little belly right now. Is it still just bloating? COuld it actually be a little belly?

  • @kelrauh in the case with your and your brother, people really are dumb if they're asking if you're identical! Apparently they don't know what the word "identical" means!

@Colleen0516 Yay! I would definitely ask about if your OB thinks you should see an MFM or not. You for sure will for your AS, but not every twin mom has to see them, especially since you're 30. I think I started showing around 11 or 12 weeks when I finally started to gain some of my lost weight. Of course it was only obvious to me, and maybe DH, for several weeks. I think at 10 weeks it would still be a bit of bloating, but depending on your torso length it could be the beginnings of baby.

  • @Colleen0516 I see an MFM and I was referred by the ob so I would def ask i like seeing the MFM better then the ob since they take ultrasounds every time I go and they also another person to ask about the pregnancy.  I like being monitored this much although now my appointments are weekly with the ob and getting my NST done. As far as when I started showing was around 13 weeks I think
