SOOO rough week. Doctor's office called yesterday morning to tell me we tested positive for the first trimester screen. AND the test for small baby was positive, so I'm higher risker for a tiny baby. So that sucked, lots of crying. They brought me in immediately for the NIPT so now this will be the longest week of my life. :-/
Had my perinatologist visit today which all things considered was good? I guess? I mean baseline, it was useless. I don't have to go back to them at all unless something changes, and all he said was add a baby asprin to my normal daily drugs (awesome now i'm up to 9 pills *oi*). We did see a genetic counselor because of the first trimester screening results, but all she did was tell us to the NIPT which I did yesterday!!!! so glad we drove an hour and wasted half a day *ugh* They did confirm what i already knew (induced between 37-39 weeks, ultrasounds every 4 weeks after the anatomy scan, potential amnio at 16weeks). I feel like i stressed about it for NOTHING! *headache*
@devow27 I think that sounds like a great idea, but i also agree with @Teacher Mom. Let's stay here for a couple more weeks (its not overwhelming so far) and then start one up! :-)
I had some somewhat good news today. Recap I'm old and overweight, which doesn't necessarily put me at high risk, but I also have a heart murmur since birth which apparently has gotten worse since becoming pregnant and a history of grand maul seizures. Apparently I'm just falling apart. lol.
Anyways, my doctor followed up with me after reviewing my files and she is NOT going to refer me to a specialist to treat my pregnancy (so yay!) I am just to meet with the cardiologist next month (so they aren't too worried about it I gather) and meet with the neurologist in the next few weeks to go over some things with me. I haven't had a seizure in 11 years, but apparently being pregnant lowers your seizure threshold so she was concerned.
Just an update ladies, just heard from the doctor's office. Our NIPT results came back all Negative! And we are having a little baby boy!!! omg i can't stop crying. I'm so relieved.
sorry i was on mobile and got cut off! I had my son at 33 weeks due to pPROM and pre term labor, unknown causes. I am being seen by my OB as well as MFM. The plan is p17 shots from 16 weeks until I deliver, cervical length US every 2 weeks from 18-24 weeks, and cerclage if needed. I have a lot more anxiety this time around, like I am waiting for something to go wrong. I am being seen every 3 weeks, some times more frequently. I think I have been spending more time at the doctors than anywhere else at this point!` I have had 2 us and everything looks good so far. fx i make it to at least 35 weeks!
@ama7165 yea I know how you feel on the constant doctor visits. Every week I'm seeing somebody new! Or repeats..... but I would bet after a scary experience you would be more concerned the next time around. Did they give you any idea the likelihood of a repeat from before? Like are there statistics on that kind of thing? But hey! Bonus: extra ultrasounds! I get one every four weeks until 30weeks then every week to check for size so I'm happy about that, not the high risk part, but take the good with the bad....
@jesserinf mfm doctor said chance of reoccurance is 25%
I am glad to have closer monitoring too. I will be getting us every 2 weeks from 18-24 then a little less frequent. It does help me to feel a little better.
Any other moms at risk for premature birth receiving the steroid injection (I forgot the name). I'm suppose to start next week at 16 weeks but am still waiting for insurance approval. Wondering if anybody else has had issues getting approval. Or if anyone had it in previous pregnancies if it helped prevent premature labor or not.
Wow @allybiery 16 weeks is SUPER early to get the betamethasone injection (which is what I'm assuming you're scheduled to get). I was diagnosed with pregnancy induced hypertension at 26 weeks and I received the 2-part injection to prevent premature labor and develop DS's lungs just in case I did deliver early. I was able to keep my blood pressure in check with medication and it didn't advance into pre-eclampsia, fortunately, and I made it to 38weeks4days, so I guess it worked!
My advice to you is to tell the nurse to inject FAST because that stuff hurts going in. Slow injection, in my experience, intensified and prolonged the pain. I also noticed more soreness after getting the injection slowly (over 60 seconds) versus as a quick shot.
@Allybiery That seems super early for a steroid injection. My OB told me the research indicates that they're really most effective when administered 2-7 days prior to delivery, and not terribly effective out of that window. And multiple doses seems to reduce the impact and can cause other issues. I had 1 round of steroids with my 1st preemie and 2 with my 2nd. But they didn't administer the first dose until 24 weeks.
At 16 you haven't reached viability yet and I'm not sure what they're going for with that. At 16 weeks I started weekly progesterone injections to help delay preterm labor, but not steroids.
@Xath did you're second preemie come earlier than you're first?
Yes, but not because of the preterm labor. We were actually managing that pretty well between the progesterone injections, nifedipine, and (later on) bed rest. Then the little bugger wrapped the cord twice around his neck, and since my placenta calcifies early, they were concerned about a clot catching in the wrap. He kept having decels during my NSTs so they sent me to the hospital and then I delivered at 35+2. But considering that I'd been contracting regularly since 22w, I'm really happy we made it that far.
I am starting the p17 injections next week at 16 weeks as well. I have nothing to compare it to but a lot of studies I read showed women going into labor 7-10 days after stopping them. I will be getting them until I have the baby or at 39 weeks
Well insurance denied my p17 injections even though my son was born at 32 weeks 13 months ago. Uhhhhhh. This isn't going to help my anxiety.
Call them back and talk to a real person until they accept it. Sometimes the automated claims adjustments will deny things, but when you call them, they'll work it through.

I'm not high risk but I agreee with xath. They will prefer to pay for shots over a possibly preventable nicu stay.
I'm just now seeing this board . I am high risk this time. I've had one child at 37 wks because of preeclampsia and a stillborn son at 32 weeks due to a blood clotting disorder. I am on a lot of vitamins, aspirin and lovenox injections daily. It feels like a constant struggle to make sure I get everything in daily but there is the comfort of knowing I'm doing everything I can to avoid what has happened in the past. Good luck to all of you! Hang in there any (although it's tough) enjoy every minute of being pregnant with your little ones!
Hi everyone. I'm type 2 diabetic, 3rd pregnancy. Started as gestational with my first pregnancy and never went away. My second pregnancy I started insulin in 1st trimester but never progressed to anything past 1 shot a day. Currently with Baby #3 I am at 3 shots a day - humalog at lunch and dinner and Trashiba at bedtime. I am also continuing my metformin. My doctors appointments will start to increase now that I am getting to the halfway point. I have been doing my best to stay as healthy as I can.
@ama7165 thank you for asking. Yes finally after many calls and red tape it is covered and I was able to start it only one week late at 17 weeks last week. Puts my mind at ease for sure.
Anyone ever have to spend p17 due to allergic reaction? I am starting to have itching and swelling at injection sites.
Call your doctor just in case, but I remember those being "expected side effects" when I did P17. We made sure to rotate cheeks every week to allow the other side a chance to calm down.
I went here before but I definitely go here now. I have hyperthyroidism, no large intestine and now IC to add to the mix. Emergency OB appointment to discuss options and I imagine bed rest will be on the list
I don't think I am technically considered high risk (yet) but I am being followed by maternal fetal medicine due to low Papp-a this pregnancy and pre-eclampsia from my last pregnancy. I am really hoping I don't have the same issues this time.
@xath. Thanks ob did say normal reaction. But I am soo itchy!!!! I have been switching sides but all of a sudden all 4 spots got swollen and itchy. Fx this gets better
@ama7165. Yeah I remember that happening. I think it just built up after X weeks of injections. I hope you can find some relief soon. You can ask your OB if there are any safe topical creams to alleviate the itch.
Question for you ladies. Expecting mom has placenta previa...is this considered "high risk" for pregnancy? She didn't say whether it was partial or total, just that the OB told her to avoid strenuous activity and no sex. Has anyone had this before (I know the basics of what it is, just not sure if the placenta typically moves on it's own)?
@krex placenta previa typically resolves as the uterus grows and the placenta moves away from cervix. Until then, she is at higher risk of bleeding. If it persists then delivery is usually at 37w and via cesarean section to avoid the onset of labor

Thanks for that! She said a C-section was a possibility, but I didn't realize it would be at 37 weeks.
I have a low lying placenta that is setting on the anterior side of my uterus. It is 8 mm from the internal cervical os. The issue is that I have a previous c section scar in there too. My dr mentioned the words placenta accreta, but said I should not worry. How am I supposed to not worry about this? If it in fact did turn into accreta I could possibly have major hemorrhaging and a definite hysterectomy. I am scared sh**less right now and google is not my friend. I had an ultrasound last week and they did do a vaginal to get a good look at my placenta location, I am really hoping they would of picked up on a possible accreta at that time, next scan is on feb 27th. I'll be 25 weeks. Anyone with any insight?
@Mport90. It's definitely a scary thing, but even with an anterior placenta the chance of accreta is less than 5% (according to my OB). It's something they will be able to monitor and know ahead of time so they can be prepared for a blood transfusion with your delivery. The good news is that OBs are having more successes every day and now some have been able to avoid uterine hysterectomy with minor accretions. The important thing is to get regular monitoring.
Ladies - any interest in a (monthly?) high-risk / extra monitoring check-in? Found out this morning at my anatomy scan that I'll be needing regular growth scans for the remainder of my pregnancy (combo of AMA and low PAPP-A, somewhat similar to @awillis13) and would appreciate the space to discuss.
c1tym0m22 I would. I go for my anatomy scan Thursday, but I am already high risk due to a horrible first delivery, a blood disorder, and a genetic problem they just found on my prenatal blood test that I never knew I had

I agree too, few more weeks and we will get it going. This thread is nice in the meantime though!
