Has anyone gone to a 3D ultrasound outside of their doctor to find out the sex of the baby? My ultrasound isn't until January 3rd at 20 + 3 weeks. I was hoping to find out the sex before Christmas.
I haven't and don't plan to get a 3D ultrasound. I'm sure someone out there has, though. Is there another board you could post this on that gets more traffic from women further along? Maybe second or third trimester boards?
I personally do not have experience although there is a part of me that is considering it. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists strongly advises against them. Primarily because it can provide a false sense of security that everything is ok or they may tell you something is possibly wrong when it it may be untrue. A big concern is that often people will go to a "boutique" u/s place and then skip their anatomy scan (crazy but I've seen it happen!).
However, I know several people who have done these and have had really good experiences. I think if you're at least 17.5-18weeks your chances of getting an accurate sex reveal is probably about the same as at the Dr. I have heard that there is a much more relaxed feel and it is more "warm and fuzzy" than the Drs office.
If it's purely just to find out the sex, I don't see why not, as long you know that the AS is incredibly important to make sure that baby is okay. There was some discussion about an elective ultrasound, but I can't remember where that was. I do remember from my last BMB that some mamas did the 3D ultrasound around the 30 weeks or so, when baby is more developed but not too squished yet, more for documenting what they looked like in the womb.
We debated it but our AS will be at 18 wks so we are just going to find out then. We never got good 3D pics of the twins (only done at the Dr) so I would almost feel guilty having it just to have, although I did have a lot more scans last pregnancy.
We are having an early scan with this baby. But mainly because our anatomy scan is not scheduled until 21 weeks after the holidays and we would like to be able to tell our families while we are back home for Christmas since we are normally 2000 miles away and have to do everything via FaceTime! The place we are going does a "gender sneak peek" anytime after 15 weeks. It's NOT a 3D though (although I've heard they switch over to 3D images for a few minutes during the scan) but from what I understand, the baby doesn't have a lot of fat on them so the 3D isn't as great of a shot as when your 30weeks+ I will be 1 day short of 17wks at our scan!

We are also planning on an early scan. At our last US the tech told us about a place in IL that they have heard great things about called the Belly Factory that we are going to. Our anatomy scan is also in January and we didn't want to wait that long so we are going this coming week when I am 16 weeks. They do gender scans any time 15+ and also have 3D and other scans if you want. It's also very reasonably priced since they don't take insurance. Ours is purely for gender and we are still going to the anatomy in January, also on the 3rd which is 20 weeks. Our Dr doesn't do the blood testing with gender so we chose this option instead of waiting until after christmas. We want to put the gender in our parents stockings to open inn Christmas.
I definitely plan to still do the NT scan at 20 weeks. I just wanted to go to the boutique ultrasound to find out the sex of the baby before Christmas. I don't really want a 3D done. Thanks for all your replies.
We did this with my DS because the place offered online viewing and we thought it would be fun for the grandparents to find out the sex of the baby with us (they live on the other side of the country). It was a lovely/fine experience, definitely NOT a replacement for your anatomy scan, but I see no harm in it.
We did this with DD and we did it with this one at 15 weeks as well. We went to a Mommy-to-be spa and they do a 30 min 3d/4d ultrasound and they record it to DVD and set it to music. We still have the DVD from DD's as well. It was fun, and we did our reveal when fiances family was in from out of town, so it fell at the right time.
My sister had one around 16 weeks I think and they said she was having a boy. At her anatomy scan a couple weeks later they said definitely girl. The 3d place did let her go back for another scan at no charge. I had one around 7 months and they said it was the last week that it could be done before baby was too big but I was just dying to see what he looked like. After looking at all the pictures on their walls and then getting my scan my H and I decided that all the babies look the same... Looking back at the pictures now compared to my child I would say they somewhat resemble him but if you showed me your pics I might say the same thing haha. Its really exciting as a ftm but just don't get your hopes up that it will be an accurate picture.

I went to First Peek US at 15 weeks & they have a very beautiful/safe environment. They even provide prenatal massages!!
My partner & I wanted to find out the sex of our baby sooner.
While I also heard many things about it being unsafe, I heard about just as many of it being perfectly fine.
It cost me $39 for a 10 minute 3D session & 1 reg. US pic.
