Bra Question

Hey, when are you getting new bras? Or have you already? I should know this by now but somehow don't. Do I get one now? Or will they keep getting bigger? I know some people get nursing bras now so they can use them later, but again, do they just keep growing throughout pregnancy?

SO tell me your bra plan. And thank you in advance!

Re: Bra Question

  • I didn't get bigger at all with my first so I waited until after DD was born before I got nursing bras. I grew at least 2 sizes up once the milk came in. With this one they've gotten fuller but most of my bras still feel confortable enough to support the girls. Theres no telling if you will grow more or not before the end of the pregnancy, everyone is so different.

  • This is my first time to progress this far, so I have no plan. I'm just here to see what others recommend.
  • I never understood the maternity bra thing. They're so unnecessary. Regular bras work fanatically.

Buy what fits you now comfortably and hang on until your milk 1. comes in and 2. Your boobs calm down from the initial engorgement before you buy nursing bras.

A few bursing tanks or soft sleep style nursing bras will get you trough the first few weeks.

I pretty much wore soft nursing bra for a year and half ha. It was so strange transitioning back to normal wired bras. I leaked easily at night so I had to wear them to sleep with pads.

  • I don't remember a lot about my boobs from during my last pregnancy, but I know that I got bigger around. So while I did not go up a cup size, I definitely benefited from a little extender for the snaps.

I have a pretty small small chest to begin with, so once my milk came in (and then calmed down) I basically gave up on bras and lived in nursing tanks that I layered under other shirts. I stocked up at Targer when they went on sale on Cartwheel. (Bear with me as I don't know fashion words.) They have some that are like t-shirt material and are pretty loose around the middle and some that are more like what shiny leggings are made out of. Those fit much tighter, but might provide a little more support. The biggest plus for me about the tighter ones was that the clips seemed much more sturdy.
  • I live in sports bras until breastfeeding. I do have a few larger regular bras from previous pregnancies. I think I usually go up a cup size during pregnant and then get a lot bigger breastfeeding. I start at a 38B then go to 38C and then 38D after baby.

  • It's different for every woman. Mine usually only grow during pregnancy and I don't see much if any difference when lactating. For other women, they grow during pregnancy and they grow again with BF.  I would buy 1-2 for what you think you'll need now and wait until you start nursing before you order nursing bras. They also have nursing tanks which you could get 1-2 for the first few weeks before you get some bras.

I already had to buy new ones this time. My band side is the same but I went up two cup sizes already! I bought a couple regular bras for now and will replace with nursing bras after the baby is born. There's no telling what size I'll need then.

With my first pregnancy, I don't think I had to buy new bras until after DD was born. Once the milk came in, I had to get all new bras. There was a fantastic little shop right at the hospital that fitted and sold nursing bras.

  • I was going to go ahead and get a nursing one, but they're hard to find this small. I decided next time I go to target I'm just going to size up in rib. I usually wear a +2 cup sizes and I think I'm going to cut that for now since I'm actually a real A right now.

  • I was a normal b size pre-pregnancy. Within the first month of knowing I was pregnant my boobs were overflowing the bra. Around 8-9 weeks I bought new bras. I chose to just do cheap bras. I knew I needed new ones because through my shirts you could visibly see that my bras didn't fit besides the fact they hurt.
I've been in a c now and happened to find some cheap ones that have clips in the front but I didn't specifically look for them. Some days I'm a very full c but not often enough yet to buy a d If you're comfortable in your normal bras, I'd wait to buy nursing bras. I've been told that they definitely grow even more when the milk comes in.

  • First time round I got maternity bras half way through because my boobs had grown and the wiring in my normal bras was so uncomfortable I didn't want to wear them anymore. Especially as my bump grew the wire would dig in and make me feel sick. I got a couple of bras slightly bigger than my boobs at the time and sure enough I grew into them. When my milk came in I wore sports bras because my boobs wouldn't fit in anything else lol. And it was the most comfortable to keep them contained. Once my milk regulated I switched to nursing bras.
  • I am very small chested- My first two pregnancies I had minimal growth and was able to wear my regular bras. I did transition towards the last month to a cup size larger nursing bra because they started feeling fuller. This pregnancy I have already grown two cup sizes so I picked up some inexpensive bras from target (with cartwheel!) for comfort! I am rocking a 36 C and may still have to go up one more size.
  • I've already gone up a cup size and a band size. I still have old bras from my last pregnancy but if I didn't have those I'd be buying new ones now. I had to wear a regular pre pregnancy bra yesterday while I did laundry and it was so uncomfortable !

  • I was a 34B before getting pregnant, and I've gone up 2 cup sizes. I picked up a cheap bra with an underwire and another one without an underwire. The one without the underwire is great-- the girls can keep growing and the thing will still fit. Neither are maternity/nursing bras.
  • @cclaineDC can you recommend the brand? bonus points if I can order online!

  • I had to switch to bigger bras at least a month ago. I started at a 34B and am up to a 36D. I did not like wearing a nursing bra last time. I prefer something that hides nipples and has an underwire.  I didn't have a noticeable change postpartum, but I also barely had any milk come in. I hate bra shopping, so I am hoping what I have will get me through.

  • I think, unfortunately, there is no silver bullet answer for this because everyone's situation varies so dramatically. I will say that, for me, I didn't need different bras through my first pregnancy, then I bought a few cheapie nursing bras on Amazon, wore those for a few months while nursing, switched back to my old bras and tossed the nursing ones. I probably should have kept them, but they looked like they had seen better days. This go around, I'm only 15 weeks in, but my regular bras still fit fine. If I did have to size up, I wouldn't go maternity just because those seem to be pricier for no good reason. I'd buy a couple of whatever size I need from Target and hope those work for the rest of the pregnancy. I will likely re-buy some cheapie nursing bras for the maternity leave stretch. Even when not nursing, they were super comfy because they have no underwire.

  • I went up a size around weeks 9/10 and now am needing to go up a size again (almost 16w). I may buy two nursing bras in the new size but I know that once my milk comes in I'll need a bigger bra yet again (which has me terrified). I hate spending money on bras I'll hardly use but yet it's so important for me to have a good fitting bra and be comfortable.

  • @tenfour I got them at Victoria's Secret.
  • FTM, so I haven't had experience with this yet, but so far I haven't gone up much. I have extenders that I'm hoping to be able to use, but have a feeling I will be in sports bras...those built in bra tanks have never worked for me...I'm 36 D/DD...scared for them to get any bigger!!

  • I would just wait until their uncomfortable, I started out big and went to obnoxious, unless your going to do a lot of nursing in public I wouldn't bother with the nursing bras if you're bigger, the little plastic clips like to randomly un clip on me which is fun... also if you're planning on nursing don't do underwires, clogged ducts SUCK! I just use normal bras without underwires and take a strap down to nurse.
  • I'm waiting until end of second trimester and then again probably a few days after baby is here when milk comes in. This is my second kid if that makes a difference lol.

  • I had to stop wearing my vs push up bras at 10 weeks because of soreness not engorgement. I bought some comfy t-shirt bras at Gap and I am waiting to buy nursing bras until I see how my breasts change. I am eyeing nursing bras from H&M, they are cheap and have great reviews.

  • Question:
I was already blessed with too-big 34F's. They grew about a cup size around weeks 8-9 (now at 15), and I've been dealing with my old bras but keep having to frequently tuck the girls back in throughout the day which drives me nuts. Bras in this size are not easy to come by (haven't yet found a store near me that carries them, but available online) and certainly not cheap for a good fitting one...do I buy one now and more when milk comes in, buy a few now, or struggle and wait until/if they grow again? Do I get regular bras or nursing ones?? Help please!
  • @museic I can't answer your question as I'm a FTM but as for bras have you checked out Lane Bryant? I am also very blessed in the boob department and that's where I always go. They have larger sizes in prints and cute designs so they might have some for you. I'm lucky that my boobs haven't grown much just have gotten fuller so my bras still fit so far.
  • I bought two maternity bras at around 11 weeks because I was so incredibly uncomfortable in my bras. I kept having to unhook the damn thing in public because I felt claustrophobic. Even if they keep growing, it's worth it to be comfortable for now. I went with these from Motherhood Maternity, and they're crazy comfortable. It's going to be hard to go back to regular bras.

I thought about just buying regular bras, but I like the idea of unhooking to breastfeed. I don't want to have to wrangle a regular bra out in public or get undressed every time the baby needs to eat, but I'm also a FTM so maybe it isn't that difficult. The hooks don't come undone on me.

  • @museic I am always on team comfort. If your current bras aren't cutting it why make yourself more uncomfortable than you need to be. I understand how damn expensive bigger bras can be (such a scam in my opinion). I say buy at least one bra that fits well for now and then see what happens when your milk comes in.
