Not my first IVF rodeo

Re: Not my first IVF rodeo

  • @ifyoucandreamit fingers crossed that all three fertilize!

I've moved on from my meltdown from sadness to annoyed/pissed. When I was still working with my OBGYN, she ran my prolactin levels, which were quite high. Was placed on bromocriptine 2.5mg/night for about the past 1.5 years. Since then, my levels haven't been checked and honestly, I didn't think much of it. After this most recent FET was canceled, I pushed my RE to get some of my levels re-checked, thinking maybe my thyroid was out of wack, or just to make sure that everything was still in the normal range. Had my prolactin rechecked and sure enough, it's elevated, even with the meds (currently 32 and it should be below 23). For those of you that don't know, prolactin is present when your body is ALREAY pregnant or nursing, so that you don't ovulate or get pregnant again. Wonder if this could be the cause of my failed FETs and/or chemical pregnancy. I'm pissed that such a simple blood test could have possibly prevented this. Now I have to get a new referral to a regular endocrinologist so I'm sure my next FET will be delayed into the new year. At least maybe I can have all my levels checked again and maybe, just  maybe, fixing some of this stuff will help me be successful.

    Sorry for the long rant!

  • @Hopeful_mom I was in a similar situation..we did a mini IVF protocol and at my retrieval we had about 5 follicles..at the retrieval they got 3 eggs all mature..2 of the 3 fertilized and 1 made it to day 5..we transferred the one and it worked..Now I am 9 days away from my due date waiting for this little guy to make his appearance.  Good luck..i'm pulling for you

  • @IfYouCanDreamIt I hope things turn out ok with your thyroid. Not what you were expecting to here, I'm sure.

@mtpbadger I would be so upset also!  Hoping this is the break you need to get you on the right path.

@rachlee2010 love your story!  I'm so excited for you!

I hope this unexpected delay can only help you gain additional strength for when its time to jump back in. I know when I was hit with delay after delay in August and September I finally just accepted it and knew that when it was time for me to start again it would happen on its own. I pray that you can get started again soon but also that they are able to help get your prolactin back where it needs to be so you can find your success! Thinking about you girl, big hug :)

  • mtpbadger That is so annoying, I would be extremely mad finding out that. I know how upsetting delays are, when it's with something you want so bad it can feel even longer than it is. I hope you get help and back on track soon. You are in my thoughts x

rachlee2010 I'm super inspired by your story, thank you for sharing!

Kp214 you are right, so not what I was expecting and I'm quite eager to find out what's going on. Scheduled a scan and going for blood work tomorrow while waiting for the "embryo update".

  • HI ladies, I finally did it, finally made it to an ER.  Having mixed feeling but hoping for the best...at least i'm still in it today!!  thank u all for your kind words and thoughts its greatly appreciated!!

    AFM
I can't believe i made it through an ER, I was nervous going in and tried to stay calm as i could.  I was scared i would come out with nothing.  Happy to report I got 4, yay!!  All from the right side what a trooper, I need to have a serious conversation with my left side   Now even though they got 4, she did say one seems a lil abnormal - I'm sure something everyone wants to hear NOT!!  so with that said they are still going to try to fertilize it with regular natural insemination.  Since one of the follies were on the smaller side I think thats why they want to do 2 natural and 2 icsi SO I'm still quite nervous.  I'm glad its given me hope and something to work with.  Like so many of you lovely ladies have told me, thats one hurdle done.  I cried when they told me and continued to cry when she said everything looks normal and great.  Its just that feeling ike maybe this really can work.  I've been very concerned that my eggs aren't good lately so i think its just all of that coming together into one making me an emotional mess.

@kp214 great memory!! @rachlee2010 thanks for refreshing my memory!  i feel like i did read ur story, on the low amy thread?  9 days away thats amazing!  u truly have something to be thankful for this year...hope i do to ;)

@mtpbadger sorry ur going through all this.  i would be infuriated too!!  Rant away you have every right!!

  • How do you guys deal with the anxiety of starting a new IVF cycle after ones that don't go well? I see my RE on Saturday for the first monitoring appt and am a bundle of nerves about it thinking everything will repeat itself again.
  • Hi Ladies.. I recognize a lot of you from the other threads. I just found out yesterday that my second IVF failed after we only retrieved 2 eggs (despite 4-5 mature follies) and only had 1 embryo to transfer on day 3. My first IVF was cancelled in August for poor response. So I guess as I start looking towards IVF # 3, this board may be a good fit to get some perspective from those in a similar situation. In the next two weeks, I have a consult with my current RE and two other REs in different clinics that are highly recommended. I am curious if anyone has advice on what to ask during these discussions? Though I have never been officially "diagnosed", my assumption is I have DOR based on my response to the IVFs, though my #s aren't that bad (AMH is 1.55) and FSH is normal. So I think we kind of know the what/why of how come things aren't working, so my thought is really just to focus on getting their opinions on what to try next for protocol. Based on these boards, I am pretty convinced I want to Estrogen priming after birth control and micro dose Lupron did not work at all for me. Besides protocols.. anything you'd recommend that I ask? I never even had a follow up with my current RE after my cancelled cycle in August, so this a first time for me.

Sorry we are all still here, but thanks for listening.

@kangastein- I don't have great advice on this one, but hoping they changed up your protocol to try to give you a better result? That is what gives me hope each time...

  • @jamieh2000 part of what's making me nervous is the different protocols! I make a decent amount of eggs but they don't develop well so I often feel like I'm going to just repeat the same cycle again. I've had several meetings with different REs and I make them go over what protocol we will use and how it will make a difference. I ask them if there's additional things I can do to help and also ask them about timing. I make sure there are no additional blood tests needed or any tests we can do. I had a hystoscopy and biopsy to make sure my uterus was in order. I've been reading about estrogen primed too because it was recommended to me and it seems as though it will be perfect for your situation. I find meeting with other REs to be really helpful because you get new eyes on the problem and each have their own opinion.
  • AFM:
HI ladies -   I couldn't wait for my report this AM and called them, one because i was having issues with my estrace and it didn't really get to where it needed to.  I don't know i guess i was in a rush these morning, not sure why it doesn't come with an applicator.  you would think I would have more issues with the shots, nope!
Anyhoo onto the important stuff, 3 out of the 4 fertilized whoo hoo!!!!  I'm beyond ecstatic!!!  The egg that seemed a lil abnormal did not fertilize which obviously is a good thing, its not meant to be.  So seems like friday g-d willing is going to be the day.  A lil nervous with a 3 day transfer but hoping i can finally get my miracle!!!

@kangastein- thank u I'm praying they get stranger with everyday! I wish i had better advice to give you but for me when i started my 2nd ivf cycle i was very optimistic thinking i would do better then the first cycle, it was by the end of the cycle that it was disastrous that i really started to lose hope.  This cycle i thought i'll go back to the first cycle and hope i do as well...I didn't BUT I do have 3 embabies and i have to hope for the best.
Unfortunately @jamieh2000 seems like we are very similar and i hope that EPP will be the magical cycle that is waiting for you!  I'm so sorry this cycle didn't turn out the way we had hoped!!

  • @kangastein- Thanks for the input! I am definitely going to ask very specific questions this time. Hopefully I won't be too annoying. I am also looking for an RE willing to partner and work with me since I'm a difficult case I guess. Not really feeling any investment from my current RE. Have you decided what RE and protocol you will go with next? Its hard to get differing opinions and have to make the decisions for ourselves sometimes. I think the estrogen priming could work for good responders too and maybe help improve quality. I believe colleen0516 has always responded good but she did EP this time and had the best quality embryos yet.

  • @hopeful_mom 3 fertilized is great!! It gives me hope when I hear good embryo reports
@jamieh2000 I hope you find another RE who you can work with more, I feel like having a good one is very important. I'm staying at my current place with my former REs partner after my former RE basically broke up with me. we were doing estrogen primed Lupron but I convinced her to do estrogen primed antagonist. But after our last monitoring she told me to come back this Saturday which should be much after ovulation. It could be that I haven't ovulated due to this being my post IVF cycle or it could be that she decided not to do estrogen. I guess it is the not knowing that is driving me batty right now! I still have 3 other appointments with various REs because i still want more opinions on my case and I have the luxury of having a bunch of options here.
  • @kangastein- Why did you RE break up with you? Can they do that?! We pay them! :) Well hopefully the new one will be better anyways. Can you call and ask the reason for the sat appointment? Wondering is the worst! Glad you have other appointments too. Are they soon? Keep us posted on what they say!

  • Hi ladies, I posted this as a new discussion but thought I'd throw it out here as well since I've had a really bad day and am a bit panicked. I appreciate any help!!!

I was prescribed vaginal suppositories for FET (to help with thin lining) but am having a hell of a time finding a pharmacy to fulfill it. The main one the clinic usually uses wouldn't ship to Texas. Finally found one (Freedom Pharmacy) and they quoted $800. Then we got a call saying that was for suppositories and that our doc prescribed tablets... and the cost for tablets would be $1700. Well shoot.

Did any of you use Vaginal Viagra? If so what did you use tablets or suppositories?
How much did you have to pay out of pocket? Were you able to get it covered by insurance? Is so how?
If you're from Texas what pharmacy did you use? Or even if you're not but used a service out of state.... what was it?

I'm in a panic. I need to order this asap and have emailed my doc to clarify if I'm needed one vs. the other, and requested to re issue order if suppositories are equally effective. Otherwise, tablets seem like something I could get at like CVS no? Ahhhh..... what do I do!? This is a med I've never had to use before so no clue where to get it from, what it should cost etc.

These were vaginal suppositories that came through my local cvs. Insurance covered them, I think.  I hope this helps. Good luck!

  • @jamieh2000 isn't it a bit crazy? What happened was that after 3 failed transfers I went to get tested for NK cells which are slightly elevated and was told that I would have to cycle there to get treated. However I stayed with old RE instead. After my sept cycle failed he called and said I should either go to the NK clinic or see his partner, who is willing to prescribe steroids and such. My other appointments are all after thanksgiving! Hopefully you get some answers during your appointments!
  • @oxinfree maybe call your insurance? Mine covers progesterone. Freedom pharmacy is usually great for this and has good prices. In cases like this, the nurses at my clinic are always extremely helpful and may be able to give you coupons or samples.
  • @oxinfree my RE uses South Miami Fertility pharmacy and they have great out of pocket prices!  Have you tried them? My estrace tablets were super cheap through them.

    TTC for 8 years.
Started in 2008 with timed intercourse, ovulation testing, no official monitoring.
OB-GYN recommended Clomid and timed intercourse, attempted for 6 straight months.
First surgery June 2009 (OB-GYN): diagnosed with stage 4 endometriosis and large hydrosalpinx on right tube.
Second surgery (July 2009, RE performed this): Right tube had to be removed, lots of adhesions removed.
Attempted "trying on our own" as per RE recommendations, unsuccessful 5-6 months.
HSG performed December 2009: left tube open.
February 2010: started Femara and timed intercourse, attempted 6 months, no BFPs.
Took a break for a while.
January 2011: started IUI process, ovaries never properly responded to medications, 6 failed attempts, never actually completed an IUI.
Took 2012-2014 off due to depression and frustration (side note: did complete grad school to become a nurse practitioner- great distraction).
2015: started seeing RE again, went through tons of testing and HSG, left tube now blocked, only option is IVF.
September 2015: Started first official IVF cycle, cancelled in October due to large cyst on left ovary.
October 2015: started on birth control for 2 months.
December 2015: attempted to start another IVF cycle, cysts on both ovaries on initial ultrasound, left was huge, cancelled to aspirated cyst.
January 2016: Cyst back, surgery for ex-lap, cyst and adhesions removed.
March 2016: Attempted second IVF cycle, estrogen way too high, cyst back, cancelled again.
April 2016: Third attempted IVF cycle, 7 eggs retrieved, 2 mature (but not great) embryos made to fresh transfer, neither implanted.
May-Sept 2016: Break to regain sanity.
Sept-Oct 2016: Attempted fourth IVF cycle, very successful, cyst still on left but we ignored. 7 mature "great looking" eggs retrieved, 4 mature embryos made it to day 5 transfer. Transfer aborted due to large amount of endometriosis fluid in uterus.
FET of 2 embryos completed on 12/12/16.

  • @oxinfree I don't have any experience with the vaginal Viagra (though I am interested to see how it works on your lining!). Hopefully you were able to figure it out and get it ordered!

I have an appt set up with a new medical endocrinologist for next week and she is going to re-run all of my blood work (thyroid function tests, estrogen level, LH/FSH, repeat prolactin levels, A1c and a metabolic profile). I had my thyroid tested about 1.5 years ago and while it was normal, after doing some further research, it seems to be on the higher side when trying to conceive - I've read it should be under 2 and mine fluctuated from 3-4.5. I am really kicking myself for not pursuing repeat blood work sooner, especially if something comes up that could be easily resolved, but my RE hadn't mentioned it and I didn't think anything of it. I hated my old endocrinologist as well so I wasn't in a hurry to go back - I only spoke to him on the phone as he was on leave when I had my appt and met with this really nice doctor and then he called me, at work, not asking if I was able to talk, and told me I had premature ovarian failure after running 1-2 blood tests.

Depending on what the tests show, and how my current RE responds, I think I'll be joining you ladies who are currently shopping around. I think all of us on this board are "special/difficult cases" - of all areas in our lives to be special!

  • @tiffanyw1783 hi there you say ur taking estrace?  I'm taking that too and finding it a pain in the ass.  How do u get it all the way up without it disintegrating first?  Its so small i think it shouldve come with an applicator.  Yesturday I got it all over me, today was at least somewhat better.  And TMI but i feel like i'm leaking all the time, hoping thats normal.

  • @mtpbadger good luck on the RE hunt! I do think it helps even to get different opinions and also to find one that you click with a bit more, or that will be more proactive or hands on. Even though I loved my old doctor I found it extremely helpful to get second and third opinions.
  • @Hopeful_mom I was sent an applicator for my progesterone and used that for the Estrace as well.

  • @mtpbadger - ya we got the prescription re-written to be suppositories (that was what was intended) so its the $800 which I'll take over $1700 anyday. Still a bit of a punch in the gut but oh well... if it works great! I'll let you know how I get on! FX your bloodwork gives you some direction on where to go from here. Have you considered seeing an RI or getting an immune panel done?

  • @oxinfree I'm glad it got figured out and the $800 is much better than the $1700!

Depending on what this blood work comes back with and potential steps to move forward, I'm thinking of asking for an immune panel and/or a recurrent loss panel since I've had three CPs since starting with my RE.

@hopeful_mom That is awesome they are all still in the game! Fingers crossed that all make it until tomorrow and you end up transferring!

  • @Hopeful_mom - yahoo. so exciting. Congrats. Are you aiming for day 5 transfer?

@mtpbadger - ya, definitely something to look into. perhaps not necessary, but always good to cover our bases I suppose. xo

  • @kangastein hmmmmm I did have the micro dose lupron added with menupor and gonalf...it was a small does in the am and pm, so not sure if thats considered a flare...its very responsive for some, for me not so much.

Do you mean your AFC was low and thats your concern?

how are you doing? When do you go in for your blood test?
  • @kangastein what cycle is this for you, I try to keep up with everyone but i do need a refresher here and there ;)
i'm getting a lil nervous, of course i keep telling myself i'm pregnant how can i not be!!  I do have cramping from time to time BUT it seems to be more around the time after i take my estrace so i'm afraid it could be just the meds doing it.  Praying this will be my bfp!!  test day is tuesday and i'm super anxious about it.  I'll be at work so i might test prior to prepare myself....

  • @kangastein thanks me too!!! Just not feeling as hopeful, this process is very hard! You've been through the whole process 4x? I think about it all the time, I want to test but then chicken out, a day of hope left to go!
