Early intervention at 12 months?

hi there! My DS had his 12 month well child visit yesterday. I filled out a screening questionnaire at the visit, which I now know is a screening for autism. There were a couple items that the ped is concerned about and is immediately referring us to an early intervention specialist. I'm stressing and scared. Has anyone else had experience with early intervention yet?

    We just did an early intervention evaluation for my son. At 12 months he wasn't crawling or pulling up to stand. The doctor referred us to a local program that came out to the house to evaluate him, and also gave us a questionnaire. Before they left, they gave us preliminary results that said he is behind in gross motor, fine motor, cognitive, and social behavior. They also said not to worry about it too much until they put everything together in a formal report. once the formal report came back, he is only behind in gross and fine motor skills. Within a week of them coming out he started crawling and pulling up. Just remember that not every child is going to follow a questionnaire. They will do things in their own time. It never hurts to have them evaluated. At least if there is an issue, you caught it early. Good luck with everything! I know it's hard not to stress about it!

    My friends doctor wanted the intervention for her son because he wasn't crawling either by 12 months. After they evaluated him and worked with him for a few weeks they concluded he was just stubborn. He had the strength for it and could do it but the more he was pushed the less he would do it. Once they left him alone he crawled for a week and then started walking. My friend said they as the parents backed off pressure too. All kids are different. My 1 yr. old doesn't like to talk when you talk to her, but she does it randomly. like the person above said, it doesn't hurt to have the check.

    Do not stress about this! If he is a little behind, it is a chance to help him catch up and could mean nothing more than that. In the cases where there is more going on, early intervention can make tremendous amounts of difference. The programs are normally pretty fun for kids and often paid for by the state. I have worked in early intervention and in programming for older children and adults.
