  • @britvahok what OPK's are you using? I know some people have had problems with the CBADs giving peak readings for multiple days in a row (I think I remember @georgiawife6912 had 10+ days...)

@spiderlover25 I'm sorry DD is having trouble with DH being away. deployments are tough on anyone especially the kiddos and then when he has to leave again. Hugs

@lund I might follow your lead and get a chai this afternoon!

  • @Sailing_Mama I'm a big fan of Expecting Better because it doesn't force anything down your throat -- just explains why most pregnancy health studies should be viewed with skepticism so you can make your own decisions. I fully admit that I am biased to like the book because although Oster is an economist and I am not, we do similar work professionally (just in different fields) and likely have similar training that predisposes us to look at health questions this way. Maybe an unpopular opinion but I think most outcry against Expecting Better came because she notes in the book that the evidence about moderate drinking during pregnancy is inconclusive -- cue the pearl clutching. Most complaints I saw were along the lines of "she says it's safe to drink during pregnancy but we know it isn't! She is spreading misinformation!" She in fact does not say that it is safe, simply that we don't understand what a safe level is so complete teetotaling -- and the policing of women that comes with it -- aren't supported by research.

I looked at the population studies about this and came out agreeing that we don't have any information about a safe level. We know that occasional drinking of wine and beer seems to have no impact on infant outcomes but also that there is no tipping point -- infants present with FAS at different maternal drinking rates. To Emily Oster, this meant a weekly glass of wine was fine. To me, this means that drinking should be as limited as possible once the placenta has formed, and if I get pregnant I don't plan to drink much if at all. But her larger point is that we don't know and people should act responsibly with the information they are given, not have someone else decide for them.

This has already been really long but I will just say I think a lot of the super restrictive advice about pregnancy is actively harmful to women and operates under an assumption that women are too stupid to make their own decisions. That is not something I believe. It's as though society thinks women lose all agency and critical thinking skills when pregnant so they should have dictated to them the strictest possible rules. It's the same with directives not to eat lunch meat because of listeria -- there was listeria in turkey one time ever in the US. You are likelier to get it from vegetables (annual listeria outbreaks). But people think "we better tell women not to eat X just in case" when the risk is essentially zero as though they can't make their own educated decision. That's crazy to me. If a woman wants to choose to restrict then that is her right, and if she wants to eat a turkey sandwich she shouldn't get flak for that either.

    Sorry soapbox over!

  • @kiki75 Hugs. I'm so sorry you're dealing with that. It really is a cosmic middle finger -- so unfair.

  • @wabash15 I'm using wondfos and cbe. I started using cbe yesterday after I thought maybe something was wrong with the wondfos. But I've been using this same pack of wondfo since September. The only reason why I'm still testing is so I can tell my obgyn what's going on at my appt on Friday.

  • JulesDP: Haha, love the mid-day sex appointment idea. DH and I will probably schedule one of those next month if we are not successful this month. He is leaving for a trip and will be gone on -2, -1 and O day. We both work on the Friday (-3), so we might just have to use our lunch break as a sex appointment, lol.
  • Peedy: I have not heard of Yono, is it like Ava? I may look into one. This is my first cycle of charting temps and I have crazy sleep patterns (wake up a lot during the night). I don't know how normal or atypical my temps are, but I am not able to take it after 4 consecutive hours of sleep. So depending on how the next few months go, I may buy something like Ava to help keep track of it.

@linzrunz @BertieMeetsGertie CD 13 here too! As previously mentioned am I tracking it on 5 different apps so should be accurate...ha!

@adirat @Sailing_Mama this discussion reminds me of a book I really enjoyed (definitely more anecdotal than scientific but the author does cite studies and interview specialists) called Bringing Up Bébé. It's about Americans raising a baby in France and the different customs and beliefs the French have. TL;DR version is drinking is not a taboo in their culture like it is here. It's a really good read!

@baileygomez It's different from ava, because ava uses a different bunch of factors to try and guess your fertile window.  However, with my last pregnancy I was anovulatory and had very wonky cycles, so I was leary of something that wasn't a strict BBT thermometer (seems like it might be more of a fun toy for women whose lady parts like to function well).  I also have sleep apnea, and I'm hoping that Yono will get a better reading for someone with disrupted sleep than a regular thermometer.

Yono is a device that you wear in your ear overnight.  In the morning you put it on the docking station and it automatically sends your temp to the Yono app.  The price point is $100 (the website offers $20 off and free shipping to get it to $100).  Where I think ava is around $200+.
  • @beachbunnyxo123 I agree about cd13 or cd14. Where is your coverline usually?

@swimsister I can CS if you give a url (on mobile so I can't see sigs) I don't lurk the bmbs but I completely believe that -- poor ladies. What a nightmare.

    @Sugargirl1019 I agree with @linzrunz -- could be pre O dip! Fx!

  • @Peedy I'm so glad to hear that you ordered a Yono too! Mine should also be arriving today :) I was very interested in getting one because I'm a horrible sleeper and I'm also such an anxious lunatic that the thought of sleeping past my temping alarm was causing me to wake up over an hour early every day. FX that it works for both of us!

    Hi Guys,
I'm coming back from benched on CD28. I experienced a MMC a month ago. I am expecting a longer cycle. O could still be a week or two away. @Flinstone and @KhRun17, I went off BCPs and got pregnant in cycle 1, and my doctor told me that the MC was not caused by that. Just curious why you were discussing going off hormonal BCP before TTC and the relation to MC? I have friends that it worked out for with no pause in between BCP and TTC. I don't know anything about IUD/IUI...just curious about why people say this about BCP (I also checked with my doctor before TTC, and back then, they also said no need to wait).
@adirat, I totally agree with what you said about the medical community treating pregnant women like they are incapable of making their own decisions or just making "rules" super strict for no reason. I avoid sex and baths for a MONTH after my D&C on the advice of a nurse. Well, my follow up appointment was yesterday, and my doctor told me that was misinformation and he was "sorry they said that." So I followed this cautious and strict advice for nothing!

  • @sugargirl1019 a short fever shouldn't affect the sperm, prolonged fever can affect sperm but generally the ones that are being made not the ones already in the chute so to speak. His goods should still be good. I know how frustrating it is when you start with great timing but as you get to O it all goes to pot. You do have a great start though so all hope is not lost.

@flashley I agree with the other ladies you have not O'd yet because your temps have not come up. It things look promising for today. GL and HIO!

@britvahok I usually get 3 days of +, sorry yours have been going on so long. Hopefully you get some answers

  • @adirat Science and stats.. I love it!!! :)
Has anything you've read said anything about number of drinks before and after O? I'm curious if drinking can lower your chances of getting pregnant.
I think for centuries woman used to drink during pregnancy and we're all not super messed up so it's probably more of a precautionary thing. I totally agree with you on everything you wrote. I can make up my own mind based on data.
