Scared given new findings

It's been 2 months since my D&C, 3.5 months since my miscarriage. I haven't had a normal AF. My HCG has been tracking down - last week it was 16.

This week I went in for my first follow-up since the D&C because I'm concerned. The OB I saw came into the room and was all reassuring that everything was fine, but agreed to ultrasound me just to be sure. Turns out I have some mass in my uterus that seems to be arising from the wall of my uterus that is very hard for me to describe, and the wall of my uterus also looks abnormal. The OB basically said it could be anything - scar tissue, polyp, fibroid, etc, but she wanted me to get another HCG check to make sure it was still going down. Turns out it went up, slightly, to 20. (I'm definitely not pregnant - my temps are back down to normal.)

Now they want me to do another HCG on Monday, but they aren't providing me much insight into what the mass is and what we need to do about it. As a result, I'm honestly freaking out and unable to function. All I can think about is how this is going to make it even harder, if not impossible, to have kids.

@weareturtles I'm so sorry, I can't imagine how difficult this must be for you.

A little insight from working in the medical field. Your doctor likely isn't sure what is happening and doesn't want to give you the wrong information and then lose your trust if he/she is wrong. I know it's frustrating to wait but try to stay calm and let your OB run the tests that need to be done. Don't lose hope. So far you have survived 100% of your worst days, only two more till Monday. Anytime you think of a question for your doctor write it down, it will help you feel like you have gotten your questions answered. It may also help you feel more in control.

@weareturtles very sorry you are going through this. I have read that sometimes after D&C some tissue remains and this might be the reason your body still has leftover HCG and hasnt been able to regulate itself. Now that they are looking into it, they will find a way to remove it and allow the body can get back on track. Sending you positive thoughts and hoping you find an answer soon.

@weareturtles I had a similar thing happen to me. My hcg wouldn't go down to zero. When they did my ultrasound they found a "mass" of retained tissue. They did a d&c with hysteroscopy. Turned out to be a fibroid and some retained tissue. They removed both. I am very thankful that my body retained tissue because if it hadn't I would have not known about the fibroid. I am hopeful that now that it is gone I will have a successful pregnancy next time around.

@stephann85 - thank you so much for commenting! Please tell me more! What happened with your HCG specifically? Did it go down slow or just didn't drop? Did it ever go up? I am hoping to push them to do hysteroscopy. I'm also scared of developing scar tissue (if I haven't developed it already).

@SierraFoxtrot - Thanks for commenting! I realize that they have no idea what's going on, which is what makes me nervous. I am also a doctor (veterinarian), so I definitely get concerned when my doctors don't have a clue or aren't communicative about next steps. This is one situation where I hate being a doctor - I think my training makes it worse (mentally) for me.

@weareturtles Following my loss I had what I thought was a period, at about 3 weeks, but I am now convinced it was my body trying to get rid of the retained tissue because the cramps were similar to a MC and I had a lot of clots pass. As for my hcg, it went down into double digits, around 50, after about 4 weeks and then after another 2ish weeks it was down to 10. I did have a few times where it didn't move at all, once it was down into double digits. I never had my levels go up but my understanding is that the hcg can go up a couple points if there is retained tissue. They did the hysteroscopy because they wanted to make sure that they got everything. I am really grateful that my insurance covered everything.
Scar tissue was a concern of mine as well. I'm just glad they did the hysteroscopy so I had some definitive answers.

@stephann85 - Very helpful information! I am definitely having to be my own advocate because every time I go in they always reassure me that everything is fine - until they scan me. Hopefully I'll get this sorted out with them sooner rather than later and with my fertility intact!

I know my OB kept reassuring me for about a month and a half that everything was fine and that it was just taking longer. That was until my numbers started stalling out. I hope you are able to get the hysteroscopy so that you can get some answers.

@weareturtles this is so scary! I would be in a state of total panic in your shoes. I also had a "mass" after my MC. I went in after naturally MC'ing. They performed a scan to make sure there was no tissue remaining and saw what they thought was tissue. After every doctor in the practice had taken a turn at trying to remove it, it was determined the mass had to be something else. Off I went to a specialist for additional scans to identify the mass. It was determined to be one of several fibroids. Thankfully nothing more serious than that and thankfully they were able to offer a quick answer. For the weeks I waited for the specialist, I was dying. Totally the worst feeling to not have any idea what is happening. I'm so sorry you have to go through this.

@weareturtles That's super stressful. Try not to web md anything. There's nothing you can do right now. It's hard not to stress out, I know. Best of luck to you. If you feel like the dr you go to now isn't taking it very serious, then, maybe get a second opinion.

HCG is static. I need another procedure. Hysteroscopy. They want to do it as an office procedure with me awake. I am concerned because for the D&C I did awake, they did not give me sufficient pain control. Still waiting to hear whether they have a better plan for analgesia or whether I should plan to go under general anesthesia. Also waiting to hear about scheduling. Ugh...

I didn't even know they did awake ones. All mine have been under conscious sedation. I love that I don't remember anything.

After all the pain you went through with the d&c I wouldn't trust them to provide enough pain relief this time. I'd insist on a general this time.

They're okay with doing general. Said that someone would call to schedule, but I waited all day without a call. I even called them, but didn't get a call back to schedule. Hopefully tomorrow I will get a call and can get scheduled for Friday.
