  • @serenity13 Yay!! I'm so glad that you have started getting some little things prepped and it's made this all feel more real! Baby time is gonna be here before we know it. And puppy volunteering sounds so amazing <3 hope you can get over there as often as you would like in the coming weeks!

@npaulie oh my gosh! I can imagine the heat being an issue!! I workout in my livingroom before I bump my house heat on for the day (I set it down to 60 overnight to save $$) and I still feel like I'm on fire. My DH comes home and tells me it's freezing in here but I'm comfortable! When I go out anywhere I have to wear a t-shirt or tank under a sweater because inevitably I overheat and need to strip down. And oh my head-that pie sounds to die for!
  • 1: How far along are you? 21 weeks tomorrow!

2: What are your goals for the week ahead
? 5 workouts: 2 crossfit, 3 runs. Eat really well before our trip to Maine on Friday so I can have some treats while we are there! @kjd291 thanks for the recommendations last week on running in Portland!!

3: How was last week? Eh. Since I was traveling I missed a couple days, but made up some time this weekend. I got two solid crossfit workouts in, and 2 runs, one 5-mile, one 4-mile. So 4 workouts total.

4: Discovered any new challenges or needed modifications
? Also finding it hard to bend. My bendable axis is shifting upwards so crossfit moves taking weights from the floor are more of a challenge to stay in correct form. I'm going to continue to modify. Luckily crossfit is super scalable and there is always an alternate move to do.

5: How are/have you treated your self? Celebrate your body and its accomplishments
! Trying to be reeeeeaaaally good before Friday's trip with DH for our "babymoon" long weekend! Also purchased a few more maternity clothes online. My wardrobe has been stretch maternity pants, long tank and sweater, boots, in varied combinations, so I have stocked up on these essentials and branched out a little and got some jeans and a dress as well. :)

6: Questions, Concerns, Rants, Raves, Randoms? Feeling really great and motivated to be active, yet feeling unmotivated mentally at work lately. I work in a creative field and I DO NOT feel creative. I can't concentrate and I'm forgetting things. I am trying to be good about writing EVERYTHING down, but today I have to give a presentation and I just feel like I don't have all my wits about me lately, a bit in a fog when it comes to work. It's strange because usually the more I workout, the more clarity of mind I have.. but this week... it's just not there on demand. Come back, brain cells!!!! I need you!

7: GTKY: Next week is already Thanksgiving!? What are your plans? Things you're looking forward to doing or people you will be seeing
? I cannot believe it. I think with all the anxiety and hostility surrounding this election cycle, the build up to the holidays sort of got swallowed up. I'm hoping to channel the good spirit of the season and get in the mood, starting with our trip this weekend! For the holiday, we spend it with DH's family since they live in the same town as us. We do a sort of potluck, very casual gathering. Then since my family is about 3 hours away, we will head there on Saturday and celebrate with them on Sunday. So we get a double holiday, which I am really looking forward to! Not gonna lie, as a former vegetarian, turkey is not high on my list but STUFFING.. give me ALL the stuffing. I make apple and pumpkin pies.
  • @serenity13 so exciting that you started buying some baby things for the nursery! I agree.. it seems so much more real when you start putting everything together!! Also I love that you volunteer with shelter dogs! We adopted our dog and I have such a soft spot for animals in shelters. What a great thing to do over the holiday.

@npaulie Friendsgivings are awesome!! No family drama, just good times and good food, what can be better! Great that you have an American group to celebrate with!

@kjd291 sorry to hear your MIL is causing drama...she sounds pretty high maintenance! I hope your dinner goes well tonight and is relatively stress free! And I love your out-of-town holiday plans! So many cute towns on the coast of Maine, that sounds delightful and relaxing! As for black friday, I've never gone out shopping that day - I've gotten some online deals, but I'm not sure if I could deal with the crowds!
  • So many Maine people and visitors here! I travel there occasionally for work. Coastal ME is so beautiful and I love Portland!

@serenity13 Nice job on the shopping! We just ordered some things for the nursery as well. Pretty exciting and it's starting to feel so real!

@npaulie That pie sounds amazing! Enjoy your Friendsgiving. I lived abroad for a while and it was so nice to have a core group of American friends to gather with.

@kjd291 Your comment about MIL not knowing your DD well enough to take her alone completely resonates with me. It's an issue I'm going to have to deal with too, but with my own parents. They rarely visit and live a plane ride away, but I know they're going to to show up and demand I leave LO with them so I can go "enjoy myself". Um, no.

@jenny0228 I can't wait for you! Haha.  Hope you have a great trip and good quality time together! And YES. agreed. Give me all. the. stuffing!!! That's fun that you'll get multiple days of celebration!

@babyisthenewblack I'm so glad that this usually difficult holiday will instead be able to be absolutely wonderful with baby on the way :* and Though it's nice to know I'm not the only one with the problem... im very sorry you will probably have to deal with it too! Hopefully they'll be understanding! OR LO will absolutely be comfortable with them and it won't even be a problem!

--MIL has already cancelled for tonight. So me and my anti-conflict anxiety will just keep stressing till we finally see eachother and are forced to talk some of this through. Just trying to remember all i can do is be open and honest and if she reacts badly--that's all on her.
  • @serenity13 I too have been finding bending/getting up difficult lately. I really thought this wouldn't become an issue until I was further along!

@kjd291 I most likely won't go to a physical store on Black Friday unless there is something I must have, but I certainly will be shopping online. A lot of the in-store deals at many stores are also valid online. For example, I always buy a pair of boots at Macys.com (19.99 a pair!). Sears.com always has good deals on tools for DH. The Body Shop usually does a crazy $150 value product bag for around $25 which makes a great gift too. Check out bfads.net, some of the deals are already on there!

@jenny0228 have a great time on your baby moon!!!

  • Question for you ladies- the last couple days I've been feeling pressure in my uterus/ lower abdomen. I was on the phone with one of the midwives today asking if that's normal, or a sign I need to take it easy. She mentioned exercise and I said I'd been doing cardio and lighter weights since becoming pregnant. Then she said "oh, you shouldn't be lifting weights at all. You should only be doing yoga and Pilates". I explained that heavy weight lifting is something I've always done for years before I was pregnant, and that I've just drastically dropped the weights. She sounded shocked an appalled that I'm lifting anything.

I don't want to not follow medical advice, but I got the impression she's operating from some old school opinion that pregnant women shouldn't be doing any exercise. I feel like she wasn't actually listening to what I was saying and in no way answered my question. What would you ladies do in this situation? She's with my midwife group so I don't really know how I can go about getting a second opinion.

  • 1: How far along are you? 21 weeks 5 days

2: What are your goals for the week ahead
    ? 3 workouts

3: How was last week? Only got two workouts in. Last week kind of felt like one of those weeks that I was just stumbling my way to Friday. Hoping for a more consistent week!

4: Discovered any new challenges or needed modifications
    ? I'm just slowwww.

5: How are/have you treated your self? Celebrate your body and its accomplishments
! I'm getting a massage this week! Woohoo! I really don't like the prenatal massages as much as regular ones but I'll take what I can get at this point.

6: Questions, Concerns, Rants, Raves, Randoms? I really miss lifting heavy weights and running. (I stopped running when I found out that I was pregnant.) Those two things are the best ways for me to get out my anger and frustration. I can't wait to lift heavy again!

7: GTKY: Next week is already Thanksgiving!? What are your plans? Things you're looking forward to doing or people you will be seeing
? We are hosting Thanksgiving. We usually do, but I just realized it this morning that I need to get my act together. I'm not as excited as usual. I think it's just that I get tired so easily and even worn out doing household chores.

  • @npaulie .... I've been feeling that same lower ab pressure and I spoke to my Ob/Gyn about it at my last appointment on Nov 1. She said it was a normal part of the pregnancy and that I may need to start modifying even more as the pregnancy progresses. Some days I feel it more than others. Some days I can run on the treadmill with no issue, and other days I can only walk because of the pressure. I've also continued to lift (today I did 30 reps of clean & presses @ 60lbs, for ex) and felt fine, but last week it didn't feel comfortable to me so I decided to do dumbbell work while seated.

1: How far along are you23 weeks & 4 days

2: What are your goals for the week ahead
? To make this week better than the last! :)
    MON: Cardio/CrossFit (DONE)
    TUES: Cycling Class
    WED: CrossFit
    THURS: Cardio/Weights
    FRI: CrossFit

3: How was last week? I had a really rough week last week. Only got in 3 days of workouts which included 2 cardio workouts, 2 lifting workouts, and a 60min hike. I was dealing with 1st trimester nausea again along with terrible leg cramping that had me limping for 4 days! But today I felt SO MUCH BETTER and had one of the best workouts in over a week. HOORAY!!

4: Discovered any new challenges or needed modifications
? Starting to also feel the challenge of bending over to tie my shoes, LOL. It's still doable, but more challenging.

5: How are/have you treated your self? Celebrate your body and its accomplishments
!  I indulged with some some chocolate marble cheesecake last night, yummmmm. We had a UFC party at the house on Saturday night and I bought a cheesecake platter for our guests. I managed to not touch it but then last night, while watching Christmas movies on the Hallmark channel, I got the urge to indulge, so I did ;)

6: Questions, Concerns, Rants, Raves, Randoms? My Mom and Dad fly in from Boston on Wednesday, on a one-way ticket! WOOOOHOOOO!!! I can't wait to see them and have them here with us again!!!! Hubby and I have been making some changes in the houses to open up a room for the baby's nursery but we don't want to start buying furniture and decorating until my parents get here. I want my Mom to be involved. So I'm looking forward to that happening!!!

7: GTKY: Next week is already Thanksgiving!? What are your plans? Things you're looking forward to doing or people you will be seeing
? Mom & Dad will be here to celebrate their first Thanksgiving in California!!! We are cooking at the house, so far it's just me, Hubby, Mom & Dad, and my stepson (who will be visiting from the Marines) will be splitting the day between us and his Mom's house. It would be great if my stepdaughter could join us too, but she continues to be angry with us and refuses to talk to us. It was her birthday this past week and both Hubby and I made multiple attempts to reach out to her, and she ignored us. Her Mom ended up texting my Hubby to let him know she didn't want to see us for her birthday. So crazy. And sad.
  • @npaulie I am so sorry your midwife is telling you this and making you need to defend yourself. I would 100% agree she is giving outdated advice-aka: no weight, yoga only, don't get heart rate above 140.  All of these things have been proven totally incorrect if not the exact opposite of what should be recommended.

If there is a reason you are high risk or have some issue arise then I know they will recommend a max weight limit. But otherwise all my midwife this time and doc last time said was : pregnancy is not a time to push yourself and increase intensity - it's a time to maintain. And: whatever you've been doing before pregnancy is fine to continue as long as it feels good.

like I had said in my check-in, I've been feeling crampy but it's also kinda low pressure at end of workouts & after.  I haven't asked about it yet--but assumed as long as it's not a full BH contraction it's just normal but a sign I could take it down a notch and keep more hydrated.

no advice on how to deal with the situation though :( that's hard when she's the medical professional telling you one thing but you know it's not fully correct. Ugh. Maybe tell her you did research and know other moms doing this with approval of doctors and ask her to do some research on it?  Sorry, mama. Keep us updated.

@triwellnessgirl I am SO excited for you about your parents move! I hope having them around is everything you dreamed of and more! It's especially lovely with a LO on the way to share with your mom!

And sorry to hear you you still haven't been able to connect with your Step Daughter. I can't imagine the disappointment and frustration-but keep remembering it's her, not you! Sounds like you and DH were and are doing everything possible to help her and she's just stuck in a negative place.  Prayers she can come around eventually!

Efit to add: umm: yummm cheesecake. Good splurge, mama! It's what I've been craving all week.
  • 1: How far along are you? 21+5

2: What are your goals for the week ahead
? 4 workouts, drink more water, eat healthy and portion control

3: How was last week? Only managed to get 2 workouts in, but it was better than the 1 workout from the week before!

4: Discovered any new challenges or needed modifications
? As others have said bending is slowly but surely becoming a problem for me!

5: How are/have you treated your self? Celebrate your body and its accomplishments
! I went to a couple craft fairs this weekend and bought some cute baby things! It was so fun!

6: Questions, Concerns, Rants, Raves, Randoms?
Rave- finally started feeling baby kicks this week!
Rant- I'm SO over the construction going on at my office, I've been having to switch computers every day and my whole office is packed in a box that I carry around from desk to desk. So inconvenient!

6: Questions, Concerns, Rants, Raves, Randoms? Guys. I'm almost at third trimester. Can't seem to wrap my head around it. Eeeek!
Had some not so fun MIL drama this weekend about her insisting I let her take DD which I'm not comfortable with at all because she is never around to spend time with us together so I don't think she knows her well enough.   because of it all DH has invited her over for dinner tonight.  We all are too good at avoiding elephants in the room... so we'll see if we avoid the topic all night, bring it up successfully, or just make a bigger mess of things. Andddd We'll see if she even shows up or makes another excuse.  This weekend her plans to see us were cancelled because SHE missed her nap.

Anyone going black Friday shopping!? I can't decide if I want to or not.
The bolded made me LOL! And I can't believe she already cancelled your dinner plans for tonight! I'm sorry you are having such a frustrating time with her. I completely understand not wanting to leave your child with someone who barely knows them, even if they are family! Family doesn't always automatically= the best option for childcare, they need to know your child needs as well!!

As for black Friday shopping, I haven't gone in years and never in the town we live in but I'm planning on doing it this year! We have lots of expensive baby stuff to buy! ;)

  • @kjd291 your MIL sounds like she's unwilling to make any effort, not to mention being inconsiderate for cancelling plans again! I'd be so mad at her.

I'm debating Black Friday shopping. I don't work until 1 that day so part of me wants to do some shopping off our registry for some of the more expensive items like the stroller/car seat, but I'd SO much rather shop online than go into a store! I may call BRU/Buy Buy Baby ahead to see if they're going to offer the same deals online as in store (or if they'll have greater discounts Cyber Monday).

Everyone sounds like they've got awesome goals for the week! I hope you're all able to accomplish everything you want and hope you all have a great week! <3

2: What are your goals for the week ahead
? Continue to monitor my diet. I did get a walk in both Saturday and Sunday mornings 1m-1.5m. That pleased me because as much as I tell myself there shouldn't be a problem getting that done any weekend....something always comes up.

3: How was last week? Last week I successfully worked out mwf morning and sat sun. I was however lax about my diet and lax about keeping my dietary log. Mostly bc when I ate like crap I didn't want to record it. =)
4: Discovered any new challenges or needed modifications
? Drinking more water. I had a lot of bad cramping and backache.

5: How are/have you treated your self? Celebrate your body and its accomplishments
! I ate junk food left and right last week. So I guess that balanced out all my workouts.

? Unfortunately my work schedule remains the same so nothing changes

  • This is kind of a rant, but I woke up to find yet another message from my dad on his (and my mom's too) opinion that I should not be running at all anymore (I ran ~3.5m yesterday, actually at a good pace) because he thinks it puts stress on the baby. I want to send him articles and research on why it's perfectly fine and I've told him several times in the past that all my doctors have said it's definitely alright since I ran before pregnant I can continue as long as it's comfortable to, etc. etc.... but part of me just doesn't want to engage with him anymore since he always has to have the last word on anything. Has anyone else who's still running/keeping up exercise had any success convincing family/others that it's ok & to leave you alone with their opinions, and how did you do it?

    Pregnancy Ticker
  • @serenity13 I'm sorry that your parents are judging your fitness routine so harshly. It's so hard to feel like people so close to you don't trust your decisions! I've also dealt with this from my mom, and my aunt. My mom is starting to back off, she is especially critical of my decision to continue to do crossfit, but I have to remind myself that she doesn't really understand what crossfit is anyway. My aunt thinks she knows better because she is a nurse. But BECAUSE she is a nurse I wish she would get more informed! In my experience, people who don't regularly exercise are more apt to be judge-y about it. When I mention even to friends that I am still running and going to crossfit, some people find it hard to hide their surprise. Especially those that know I had a hard time conceiving and had to do IVF. It seems like they think I'm more fragile because of that, but there is no truth to it whatsoever. My pregnancy is not considered high risk. I don't really have any advice because I haven't been able to convince anyone that it's fine to exercise - mostly I just no longer mention it in front of people I know have a different opinion.

@npaulie I'm sorry you're dealing with this from your mid-wife! You want to be able to trust your health care provider, that's really throwing a wrench in, but you know yourself and your body best. Are there other providers in the same office that you can see, or is there only one? In the practice I go to, I have appointments with a few different doctors.

@triwellnessgirl so sorry to hear your step-daughter has still not come around. I hope when the baby arrives she will change her mind. It may be that she has held out for so long she doesn't know how to start to fix the situation. I hope that she can be part of your baby's life with you and your husband.

And YAY for your parents moving close to you! That is going to be so great.
  • kjd291 said:

last go around ALL my co-workers lectured me constantly about my fitness and attempts at clean eating... I worked with 6-7 women in their 50's who had all had babies and all gained 50-70lbs with their pregnancies because they were back in the day when it was advised to do nothing and eat whatever.

(Not sure why it is posting within the quote but anyway..) This really gets me too. There are a few women I work with who are constantly having a go at me about my daily salads and healthy snacks. One said, "When I was pregnant, I ate two bagels a day! Live a little!" I wish women would be more supportive of other women in this way. I've stopped saying anything about my workout routine at all except to a few close friends who get it. I'm not the poster child for healthy eating, I'll indulge from time to time, but I try my best and it really gets to me that other women especially can't find a way to just let everyone do their own thing. It's almost a defense mechanism of some sort, since most of the women making these comments did gain quite a bit of weight when they were pregnant.

We are all doing our best, and kicking serious butt, so high fives all around for everyone today!!!!  <3

  • Thanks @jenny0228 & @kjd291!! I agree with you both and I'm so sorry you had to deal with people telling you similar things. I agree people can be so judgmental and everyone's entitled to their own opinion, some just don't know when to keep it to themselves. I'm going to take your suggestions & not say what I'm doing to stay active anymore to others - except to my doctors and you ladies! :)

  • Thanks @kjd291 and @jenny0228 for the encouragement and support. It's so hard to see my Hubby hurting like this. I wish there was something more I could do. I've decided to stop adding to the negativity, and just let him know that I'm sorry that things are the way they are and that I love him. I also try reminding him that he's done the best he could do, but still, it's sad :(

@serenity13 so sorry about the situation. It stinks when others judge your decisions and make you feel as if you are endangering your baby. I made it clear at the start of my pregnancy that unsolicited advise from anyone other than my medical team, my hubby, and my mom was not welcomed, LOL.  I got some comments about my workouts at the start of my pregnancy, primarily from other women who had gained a lot of weight with their pregnancies (didn't exercise or watch what they ate) but that has stopped, thank goodness. I post my workouts regularly on social media, and I also share the good with the bad. I'm honest that some days suck and I need to do a ton of modifications, while other days are fantastic! People keep commenting that I look so fit and healthy, and my hubby has often commented to the naysayers who tell me to "take it easy" that these current workouts are me "taking it easy" LOL... anyhow, I hope your family will start to better understand and support your decisions. You're doing great!! :)

@bradleerick CONGRATS on your record mileage month last month... YOU.ARE.AWESOME!!! Way to go, Girl!!

  • I just want to say you ladies are awesome and rock!!! The last couple days have been so busy so I haven't had time to sit down and respond to everyone. But do know I'm reading it!

Spoke with a friend of mine whose a certified trainer, has had a kid, and is super body conscious. She suggested that if it continues to see my GP (which the pressure has been gone the last day or so) for second opinion, but to try a support belt in the mean time and to do exercises seated (i.e. Use leg press machine instead of vertical squats.

Hope everyone is having a kick @$$ week!!

  • Everyone in my life knows that I have been running for the last 4ish years. When I first got pregnant, there were a lot of people who felt the need to ask whether I was going to continue to run and workout as much and give me their experience/feedback (which was negative most of the time). I would reply by telling them that it makes me feel good to keep me and baby healthy and my doctor thinks its perfectly fine and great. I had a record high mileage month last month (94 total miles) and I posted a screenshot of my achievement on Facebook for everyone to see. The response that I received was overwhelmingly positive! I think people are seeing me progress through this pregnancy with healthy weight gain, a positive disposition, and balance and it's helping them to do two things: 1. trust that I know my body best, not them. and 2. rethink their own damn health!
You ROCK!! I'm so jealous, I haven't had the energy to keep up my pre-pregnancy mileage. Keep up the great work mama! ;)

  • @Bradleerick PENN STATE!! I graduated in 07, that's awesome you're going to that game!! Hopefully we keep going with our winning streak! And congrats on your best mileage month!!!!

@npaulie hope the pressure continues to subside! Sounds like your friend gave you some great advice with the support belt, hopefully that helps!

@triwellnessgirl YES I've been getting those "take it easy" comments too & feel like I already am! With my run on Mon for example I would've gone double the distance if I wasn't pregnant, so I def was taking it easy in my opinion.
Thanks for all the encouragement! You're doing so amazing, I'm definitely inspired by you!!!

  • How's everyone doing!? I woke up exhausted physically and mentally--so I'm saying "Rest Day!" For me! I've gotten 3 days in so far, so I'm not gonna push it today and instead have a goal to do something tomorrow and hit 4days for the week.

re--pressure and cramping covo: yesterday was the first day I chose not to stick with my usual high level of intensity pre preggo workout video - I backed off and went with a more moderate workout choice instead of the advanced ((still not quite ready for the easy prenatal video level)) but I didn't have any crampy feelings or pressure for the day like I'd been having the past weeks---so I think its officially time to say goodbye to my hard core workout and embrace an easier route for tri 3.
  • @triwellnessgirl that is a great story! Love it!! You are doing so awesome!!!! :)

How is it Thursday already? I'm 2 crossfit workouts in, and will get in my third tonight since I don't want to run in the rain! Then a run tomorrow and a run this weekend in Maine! Yay! How's everyone doing?
  • @jenny0228 I agree... this week is going by so fast, but I'm kind of okay with that. @kjd291 I feel you, it's kind of sad, but simultaneously exciting to not be able to do the same intensity. On one hand, I'm like "no, but this won't be challenging enough." Then on the other hand I'm like "oh yes it is... ha ha... and that means I'm closer to meeting LO!"

Went to the gym yesterday and did weight machines, felt good. Haven't been doing cardio this week because I just haven't felt like it. But been trying to take the dog on walks instead. I have prenatal yoga tonight, so that'll be workout #3 this evening (even though the last prenatal yoga class I did wasn't REALLY a workout, but screw it I'm counting it today).

  • Thank goodness it's Thursday already! I don't know how everyone else feels but I'm really looking forward to Thanksgiving next week. I can't wait to have a bit of a break!

So far I have done 2 crossfit workouts, although I lack the ability to remember what to do. Last night we had a wod with 7 rounds and I got it stuck in my head that it 10. Fortunately the person working out next to me had an intervention and asked how many rounds I had done (I had done 7).... to which I responded... well I'm guess I'm done then! I can't remember anything!

Today I'm getting a massage and I'm sooo looking forward to it!

  • I've done 3 workouts so far totaling 7.7 miles. Not awesome. I was soooo physically and mentally tired on Monday that I just ran hard for a mile and then moved on to an upper body lift sesh and stretching. I feel much better since then, but I think I over did it at bowling league last night :D I must have pulled my left glute halfway into the 2nd game. I'm still feeling it today. I'm feeling good about tapering my workouts down though.

  • @sarahbobby I've been throwing around the idea of a massage. I didn't love them prior to pregnancy, but I'm loving anything that is relaxing for 5 minutes or more at this point even if it's peeing in the bathroom by myself. So, I'm thinking about giving it a shot. Let me know how yours goes!!

I feel like every week is flying by! It's great!! I'm so proud of everyone here and love the support and perspective that everyone brings!
