Re: Dumb Questions - November edition

  • @MrsBigTime Thanks for the answer, I do not have any nursing bra at the moment so I assumed that I would need some at the hospital and for later. I got two sleeping nursing bras, which are very comfy and strechy so maybe I will just use them now before purchasing real bras. I am not planning to use any fancy blouses for sometime anyway.

  • Another post made me think about this question: is anyone pumping BM before baby is born?
  • @HeatherC527 I know people definitely are, but be careful if you plan on doing it as it can cause your uterus to contract and might cause you to go into early labor. So I wouldn't do it unless you were trying to kick start your labor.

okay, here goes--this is truly a dumb question and I'm expecting to get some very direct responses, but...

Can OTC pain relievers (tylenol) be used during labor? I have a high pain tolerance and respond really well to tylenol--in the past, I've used it with a twisted ovary and with burst cysts and didn't require any additional meds to get through. Is it totally insane to think that tylenol might be enough to take the edge off? Does anyone know if tylenol would interfere with epidural (planning not to have one, but you never know)?
Yes!  I went in Friday for a false alarm and they sent me home with a small prescription for T3's.   Saturday night my contractions picked back up and so I used an extra strength Tylenol to make it through the night.   Then in the morning I took another one which didn't help and then used a T3 which helped enough to make me know when it kicked in but by that time we were on the way to the hospital.   When I got to the hospital they gave me Fentanyl and a walking epidural, even though it was 1 (for the Fentanyl) - 3 (or less for the walking epidural) hours since the T3....

No. 1. Can cause preterm labor. 2. No reason.

Only to help start labor (it helped once my membranes were stripped)

  • Any second time moms have any information about a "flat pelvic bone" ? My doctor told me I have a flat pelvic bone instead of arched like it's "supposed " to be.  He said bc of this and the fact that my little one is already measuring at 7lbs at 38 weeks I may need a c section.  I really wanted to have a vaginal birth and was just curious of anyone else was told this but went on to have a normal delivery ?  BTW I'm not against a c section and will do what's best for my son.  I'm just curious.

  • Does anyone feel rectal pressure when baby moves? I just started feeling it recently and I wonder if that means baby had moved further into my pelvis.
  • @squish143 Yes. For me, it's a lot of gas and more trips to the bathroom. But I feel more pressure on the bladder than the rectum. DD is down super low for me, so I would say that is a good indication for yours.
  • @ashleymercado88 I try to tell constantly based on my appearance of whether or not my belly "looks" lower but I can't tell lol. I figured that feeling this new pressure slash twinges of pain must be from her dropping down. Plus the pain in my pubic bone is unreal. My husband told me I've moved past the waddle and into the "cowboy walk". Haha
  • I didn't fully believe how low my LO was until the midwife confirmed it, since I never experienced it with my boys.
  • Did anyone bleed before labor? A bit tmi but when I wiped there was a vivid bright red streak that soaked the paper...I c allied l and d and they told me to just monitor for more bleeding. Baby is not much of a kicker (anterior placenta) so seeing any type of blood freaks me out to be honest

At my 37 week appt, my OB said a small, not prolonged, amount of blood may just be from dilation, but to call if bleeding continues or is a significant amount.

Only bleeding I had was the "bloody show" which only happened after the doctor checked my cervix. I hope it resolves soon!

  • For those of you that had your waters break on their own before - how much warning (if any) did you have beforehand?
  • All my pregnancies labor started with my water breaking. no warning.

I was having contractions since 4am on 11/11 and went to the hospital when they got around 3-5mins apart at 6:30pm. When they checked me I was 5cm dilated which was at 7:13pm. Then they got me into my room and my water broke at 8pm. Had my baby girl at 12:43am 11/12.
I guess you could say I had a lot of warning, (a day of contractions.)
  • With my first,  I had a tiny leak.   I wasn't sure it was broken.   When I called,  they told me to wait a few hours  and see if contractions started.   They did.   I was already overdue.

With my second,  I had contractions all day,  but I'd been having them for weeks.   They weren't very painful and were starting to slow down by afternoon,  so I was getting frustrated.   But then my water broke.   It wasn't enough to be a giant mess on the floor,  but I felt like i kept peeing myself in large amounts

  • Is it worrisome that I've had almost no change in my breasts? Maybe a small increase in size, and some more prominent veining. Will the colostrum just come? No obvious signs necessary?
  • Is it worrisome that I've had almost no change in my breasts? Maybe a small increase in size, and some more prominent veining. Will the colostrum just come? No obvious signs necessary?
That's pretty normal. With all of my pregnancies I've had very minimal changes until baby was born. My first was a successful nurser, too.
  • When does PP bleeding stop?! I had a section. Barely bled the first 5-10 days (I'm talking a panty liner would do more than enough and that was still just a precaution). Have been bleeding a decent amount since and passed some blood clots.
  • @kristah2 an increase in bleeding would be something I'd talk to my Dr about for sure. Blood clots are not uncommon but should become less as time goes on not more so I'd mention it. I had increased clots at 4 weeks PP with my first and they found out I had retained placenta which I needed a D&C to clear out at that point. Better safe than sorry.
  • Is it okay to use lanolin that is past its expiration date?
  • Anyone else take a bath to help relieve back pain? I usually like my water pretty warm when I shower so I have avoided baths up until this point because I know really warm water isn't great when your pregnant. Well my back was killing me this morning so I decided to take a bath. I didn't feel like the water was that hot but it was comfortable for me. Curious to see how hot it actually was I stuck a thermometer in the water and it was 104 degrees. I instantly turned the cold water on and drained some of the hot water until it was under 100 degrees. I'm just a little panicked now because I was probably in for 10-15 min before checking the temp and cooling it down. I wonder if I should call my ob or if it's really not that big of a deal.

I wouldn't make a habit of it, but if baby is moving just fine and no other issues, I wouldn't worry about it.

I have.   I couldn't get any out of the end so cut part of the top off and used it out of there as I plan to throw it out now.  I think it was a little stickier but seemed to work fine.

I've never heard of one smelling foul. I would be concerned about an infection. I would check with your pedi/check temp.

Me neither. Are you using rubbing alcohol to clean it closely?

  • @SandNStarsNJ I don't think you're supposed to use rubbing alcohol anymore. We were told by number of doctors and nurses just water on a qtip and dab dry avoid getting wet otherwise and air dry and expose to air as much as possible.
But in the meantime @leighry I've heard a lot it shouldn't smell and if it does could be a sign of infection. I'd check in with your dr or public health nurse.
  • @kristah2 My midwives told me to do rubbing alcohol.
  • @kristah2 We were told rubbing alcohol (obviously very little) around the base to help dry it out with DD, which was 2014. But were also told not to use water at all. Maybe things have changed? Still waiting for this little guy, so I guess I'll see what they say.

  • So we had an appt on Wednesday and our pedi said some smell some don't and to use alcohol pads to dry it out... and we have been using them but just waiting for it to fully fall off. no fevers no redness or drainage.. so not concerned about infection just want my baby to smell like a baby and not like that! Haha I'm glad none of you other ladies have stinkers.
  • That's good to hear @leighry. You know what's the worst smell though? The neck cheese. It is disgusting! I remember not discovering it for a few weeks and being MORTIFIED when I did. Anyway, hope the umbilical cord falls off soon!

  • Hmmmmm, and we were told to clean the base of the cord with soap and water each day. Interesting that different places/providers say different things.
  • Is it normal for baby's hands and feet to be cold when they wake up after sleeping in their crib? The nursery is super warm. It his feet are freezing when h change him! Only When he sleeps on his own.
Thabks for answering my dumb mom questions I feel silly asking anyone else!
  • @kristah2 yes it is. Newborns have poor circulation to their extremities which is why hands and feet will feel cold even after taking off socks or mittens. It's also why they can appear blue sometimes. DD is the same way and from what I can remember so was DS when he was little
