ftm- Feeling baby on one side but too early?

I woke up and my left side felt a little funny. Like heavyish? Maybe a little uncomfortable. I'm 18 wks 4 days. I read sometimes you feel the baby when it sits to one side. Is this it or is something wrong?

(I guess I'm wondering if the timing is right or if it's too early. I think I've felt the quickening but no pronounced kicks so I didn't expect to feel baby on one side yet.)

  • It could definitely be the baby sitting on one side. I have an anterior placenta this time, so I don't feel kicks yet, but I do feel "shifting." Definitely call your OB if you're concerned, but if you're not in pain, then it's probably just the baby chillin. Welcome to pregnancy

  • It could be baby, or even just some organs that settled overnight into the space the your body is making. I agree with @Magheeta call your doctor if you are worried but unless you have pain or other symptoms its probably nothing.

  • I find that my uterus moves around. up down, left right, depending on what I do, or whether I have a full bladder. Most of the time I really can feel where it is when I stretch flat and touch.  Doctor says it is normal.  Maybe you caught your baby on the side when perhaps you had a full bowel, so it was pushing it to one side?  If there is no pain or bleeding, I wouldnt worry.

Me:  35 year old FTM, a busy city banker living in London, and a constant worrier.
My DH:  French guy, car fanatic, best husband ever.
Our baby boy:  Due on 17 April, currently 37 weeks.  I can't believe it - I made it to full term!!!!
Last measurement:  3150 gs at 37+1!  This is going to be a big baby :)
  • I'm 16 weeks in my second pregnancy and at my OB today he actually felt around and said, "feel that firm lump? That's baby!" Placed the Doppler directly over the area and instant heartbeat! It's only on my right side. It does feel fuller and I can feel a significant difference
  • Yup baby, if I laid on my right side for the majority of the night when I wake up everything settled on that size.  Before belly is very full of baby it can be pretty funny, like I woke up with a cantaloupe on my side.
  • Honestly, I think it's almost never "too early" to feel the baby, despite what a lot of people will tell you. I am 18w 4 days now and I felt a "heaviness" this morning and when I laid flat on my back I had a small protuberance in my pelvis on the lower left side, which is where I felt it.  I had DH push there somewhat firmly and he was able to feel slight movements, so that was exciting!  But I definitely think you should be able to feel the heaviness of the little one! Don't second-guess yourself.  It's your body and you know it best.
