Re: UO Thursday - 11/3

  • I don't like Turkey.  I'm so glad that I've never had to host Thanksgiving because I can't imagine spending all of that time cooking something I don't care to eat when I could be baking enchiladas or lasagna or basically anything better than turkey in the oven.  The Thanksgiving side dishes are a different story.

  • Sorry I did a post and run! My DS needed me.

@MKRLTX I hate turkey too! My family always does baked ham at Thanksgivng as well.  I love ham.  And cannot wait for some homemade mashed potatoes!! I've also never hosted Thanksgiving.  Not sure I can handle it.
  • @MKRLTX - my husband asked me last week if there was any chance my mom would make him brisket for Thanksgiving instead of turkey. He also is anti-sweet potato and anti-pumpkin. (In his slight defense, he's also not American, so didn't grow up eating these things!)

  • Brisket for Thanksgiving sounds delicious!!
  • I hate to stick with food things but I'm lame and can't thank of anything good right now.

I dont like pie.  Any kind of pie at all.  Yuck.  No pie for me.

I also will probably never do Elf on the Shelf.  Seems like so much work.  And sort of creepy!
  • @JessyKV I'm not doing the Elf on the Shelf either.  You're right.  It's way too much work!  Plus I feel like the kids quit believing in it sooner than they do Santa.

  • @itsfine how can you not like Harry Potter?? Did you ever try to read the books or only seen the movies? I love HP!

Thank you for helping me figure out my dinner.  I'm having Thanksgiving day sides.
  • Disposable diapers are much smellier than cloth. Trust me.
  • @Assiram42 Popular. If this election has taught us anything it's that we are judgey as hell as a nation.
  • UO: I hate Dora the Explorer... why on earth does she have two shows?!
  • I'm going to continue the food theme since I can't think of anything good right now. I hate pickles. I have luckily never had a craving for them in any of my pregnancies and if I did, I would never forgive myself. The smell is enough to make me want to barf
  • Dressing is the best Thanksgiving side dish. And I you don't make it with cornbread you are doing it wrong.

Don't even get me started on calling it "stuffing" and putting it in the turkey!

  • @Ahutch428 YES! Thank you! My husband calls it "stuffing" and thinks I'm a crazy lady for calling it "dressing." I've always heard it called "dressing" unless you actually stuff it inside the turkey while the turkey is cooking. And my family has never done it that way so: dressing. But in my husband's mind it's all "stuffing" and "dressing" is just a made up word in relation to food. Also: his mother makes "stuffing" with bread and breadcrumbs. I was so confused by this because I didn't know you could even make it without cornbread. And why would you want to make it without cornbread?! My grandmother would put it a little bread if she had a couple of slices of bread that were getting stale or something. But the bulk of it was always cornbread.

  • It's stuffing. I use the gizzards which are the insides of the turkey, bread, other stuff and stuff it into the turkey to cook.

Same here! I think I'm going to get the HP book series set up on my kindle for maternity leave. Already thinking about books and tv series for those 5 months...
  • @kassyfry so much YESSSSS! Yuck!!

Also, it's "stuffing" to me and I don't like it when it has actually been stuffed! It's just the only name I've ever heard it called in my world. Also, God, I really want some stuffing now.

  • Is the stuffing vs dressing debate a location thing? I'm interested where you live or where you grew up if you call it dressing or stuffing.

Im from Missouri and I've mostly heard stuffing but I've also heard dressing.  I've also never eaten it in my life but I like the sound of cornbread in it.  I think people here make it with breadcrumbs?
  • @jessyKV I am from MA and have only heard stuffing which I think is too slimy actually stuffed in the bird. I also have never had it with corn bread but it sounds amazing!
  • It's stuffing to me! And I love me some Stove Top. I just learned a few years ago about the term dressing and I was like wtf are you talking about. But I come from an area where soda is called pop.
  • It's stuffing here in the Midwest.  My H calls it dressing, he's from down South.

I love stuffing, but it cannot come from inside the turkey.  My grandmother made oyster stuffing. Barf.
  • I'm pretty sure stuffing vs dressing is regional, as is cornbread in stuffing. I've always said stuffing even though we don't put it inside the turkey (it dries out the bird and it's a bad idea from a food safety POV).  I've never had cornbread in it, but that sounds good.  Where I grew up they were fond of putting chopped up oysters in stuffing.  Thankfully my family is not actually from where I grew up and we never picked up that tradition.
  • I don't care for Santa Claus and don't want to lie to my baby about Santa every Christmas.

  • So I did a little googling.  Most websites say it's regional but also how you cook it. It's dressing if you cook it in a pan and stuffing if you cook it inside the turkey. Some Turkey association website says the names are interchangeable though.

I don't even know if this is unpopular and it is pretty lame but it is the only opinion I can come up with at the moment.  I think peppermint season is way better than pumpkin season.
THIS!!!!!!!!!!  I had my eye out for the peppermint Hershey kisses yesterday.   This kid hates all food right now, but maybe just maybe it'll like some peppermint Hershey kisses. ;)

@Wino0920 I love that you found a turkey association website ha!
We called it stuffing growing up, my family was from the east coast. In MN and CA it was also stuffing, but last year after moving to Texas I noticed everyone calls it dressing here. When I hear dressing I think of salad, but either way it's delicious!

DH and I are planning on telling our children about Santa and if they ask if he's real saying that it's just pretend. There's nothing wrong with any other characters being pretend- Mickey Mouse etc. Our families think we're awful for not planning to lie to them, but I remember figuring out Santa wasn't real and being seriously hurt that my entire family lied to me. I also kind of think that the whole Santa lie takes away from the true magic of Christmas. With that being said, I totally understand why most parent's play up Santa.
  • I firmly believe all cats should be indoor-only.  It's cruel to let them go outside where they will only get parasites, be eaten by a wild animal or run over by a car.  They live much longer and more comfy lives indoors.

I really like your idea, but DH and his families are all about Santa. FIL even dressed up as Santa one year for his other grandchildren.  :/

Umm, it's an animal. It was born to live in the wild. They are happy in the wild despite what we think as humans. They would probably be much happier to eat mice than a pile of cat food. We have domesticated them but if they always live outside, they are just like the "wild animals" you are afraid will eat them. Why are they any different from all the other animals that live outside and get parasites, get eaten by wild animals, and get hit by cars?

Yeah, I have no idea how to handle the family situation. You don't want to ruin the fun for the other kids, but you don't want to lie either. I'm in the same boat. I'm pretty far away from having to have that conversation. I'm sure there are some books about it or something lol
  • Pickles are gross.

    HP is amazing.

Dressing/stuffing... I don't care.  GET IN MY BELLY.

If you don't like roasted turkey, have you had it fried?  My in laws do one of each and the fried is INCREDIBLE.  The only reason MIL roasts one at all is for drippings for gravy because omnomnom.

I very much dislike melon.  Any kind (including watermelon) tastes like dirt to me.  Has anyone tried those "super taster strips?"  Supposedly depending on how you react to the taste of the strips says a lot about your taste preferences in general.  I can't stand the taste of coffee, cilantro, melon or dark chocolate, all of which are indicated by my revulsion toward the test strips. I'm just that awesome/freakish.
